The right smart display is usually the one that matches the voice assistant and smart-home system you already use. For Alexa households, choose an Echo Show by room and screen size; for Google Home households, the Nest Hub Max is the dedicated-display option covered here, though the Google Store showed it out of stock when checked. If you mainly want a wall-mounted family dashboard, the 15.6-inch Echo Show 15 (2nd Gen, 2024) is the clearest fit.
Choose your assistant ecosystem first
If your household already relies on Echo speakers and Alexa routines, an Echo Show is the lower-friction choice. If you use Nest speakers and Google Home, a Google display fits more naturally. TechRadar gives the same practical advice: match the display to the assistant already in use. TechRadar’s smart display guide also asks the useful question, “Which Amazon Echo Show should I buy?” The answer depends less on a universal winner than on where the screen will sit and what you expect it to do.
Check the exact generation before buying. Features such as camera controls and smart-home radios vary by model, and product names change over time. Amazon developer documentation identifies Zigbee support on specific models, including Echo Show 15 (2nd Gen), Echo Show 11 (2025 release), and Echo Show 8 (3rd Gen, 2025 release); that is not a basis for assuming every Echo Show has the same hub capabilities. For a large wall display: Echo Show 15 (2nd Gen, 2024)
The Echo Show 15 is the strongest option here for a kitchen, shared family space, or other location where a large glanceable dashboard makes sense. Amazon specifies a 15.6-inch Full HD screen (1920 × 1080), customizable widgets, Fire TV, and a 13-megapixel camera with a physical camera cover. Wall mounting is included, but counter placement takes an additional purchase. Amazon says Echo Show 15 and Echo Show 21 ship with the wall-mount hardware needed for installation; a counter stand, under-cabinet mount, and extension cable are sold separately. The stand’s fit should be confirmed on its listing before purchase. Amazon’s wall-mount instructions describe the included hardware and installation.
For a smaller counter or bedside screen: Echo Show 8 (2025 release)
The Echo Show 8 is a more manageable choice when a 15.6-inch screen would dominate the counter or bedside table. Amazon’s setup instructions identify a 13-megapixel front-facing camera and a physical button that disables the microphones and camera. Setup requires an Amazon account and Wi-Fi. Because Amazon documentation and listings may use generation labels differently, match the exact retail name on the product listing and box rather than relying on a shorthand model name. For a larger screen without choosing a model by name alone
Amazon’s current lineup includes larger and smaller Echo Show options, but this comparison establishes detailed specifications only for the models above. Confirm the current screen size, mounting arrangement, camera controls, and hub support on the exact model’s official listing before choosing another size. A feature shown for one generation should not be assumed across the range.

When the Nest Hub Max makes sense
The Nest Hub Max suits households already using Google Home that want a dedicated 10-inch display. Google lists a 1280 × 800 HD touchscreen, a 6.5-megapixel camera with a 127-degree field of view and auto-framing, a mic/camera switch, Chromecast built-in, Matter compatibility, and Google Home hub functionality. Those are product specifications, not a claim that every Matter device or feature will work in every setup; check compatibility for the devices you plan to connect. The Google Store page showed the Nest Hub Max out of stock when checked. Stock changes, and that status does not establish that it is unavailable from every retailer or in every region. Confirm availability and the exact listing before planning a purchase.

For the Echo Show 15, Amazon separately documents photo display and controls for home-screen content. Amazon’s home-screen content settings explain how to manage what appears. A display’s ability to show photos or widgets is useful for a shared space, but it does not replace checking which services and controls are available on the exact model.

Plan for camera privacy and installation
Check the physical control on the exact device
Do not assume all smart displays have the same privacy hardware. The Echo Show 15 has a physical camera cover; the cited Echo Show 8 instructions describe a button that disables both its camera and microphones. Google lists a mic/camera switch on Nest Hub Max. Decide whether you want a cover, a combined switch, or both, and check how the control works on the model you intend to buy.

For wall placement, the Echo Show 15 includes the wall-mount hardware, while a counter stand or under-cabinet mount is a separate purchase. Amazon’s installation instructions call for ordinary tools such as a drill, level, and screwdriver bits. Check the mounting surface and the accessory’s compatibility before drilling or ordering a stand. The cited Nest Hub Max specifications do not establish a mounting package or wall-mount option.

What about discontinued or tablet alternatives?
Meta Portal Go should not be treated as a current new-purchase recommendation: TechRadar reports it has been discontinued. It may be available used, but current support and availability should be checked before buying. TechRadar’s guide covers the discontinued status.
An iPad can serve as a smart-display-like screen for some iPhone and HomeKit households, but it is a general-purpose tablet rather than a dedicated smart display.
