Smart Connect is a band-steering feature, not a speed boost. It gives multiple Wi-Fi bands—usually 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, and sometimes 6 GHz—the same network name and password, then lets the router decide which band each device should use. That is convenient for phones and laptops, but it can make setup unreliable for 2.4 GHz-only smart-home devices. If a bulb, plug, camera or sensor will not join Wi-Fi, temporarily separating the bands or using a dedicated IoT network is often the most predictable fix.

What Smart Connect actually does

With Smart Connect enabled, a router broadcasts one SSID across its available bands. ASUS describes the feature as automatically connecting devices to the most suitable band, while NETGEAR describes one SSID replacing separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz names. The router applies its own steering triggers, signal measurements and client-selection rules; it does not simply make every device use the fastest radio.

The 2.4 GHz band travels farther and passes through walls more effectively, but it is generally slower and more crowded. The 5 GHz band can provide higher throughput at shorter range. A 6 GHz band, where supported, offers additional capacity but requires compatible clients and has still shorter practical range. Smart Connect hides those choices behind one name.

That abstraction is usually useful. You can move around the house without manually changing networks, and household members do not need to remember which SSID is appropriate. It is not, however, a guarantee that every client will be placed correctly or that a setup app can select the band its device requires.

Why smart-home setup exposes the problem

Many IoT products are 2.4 GHz-only

Low-cost and older smart plugs, bulbs, cameras and sensors commonly include only a 2.4 GHz radio. NETGEAR specifically identifies some IoT devices and Wi-Fi printers as 2.4 GHz-only. TP-Link warns that some smart-home products with 2.4 GHz-only support may have trouble connecting when both bands share one SSID.

During onboarding, the phone running the manufacturer’s app may need to communicate with the device over the same local network and, in some designs, the same band. If the router steers the phone to 5 GHz while the unconfigured device can hear only 2.4 GHz, discovery or provisioning can fail even though the router and internet connection are working normally.

A failed setup does not prove the router is defective

Repeated timeouts, a device that never appears in the setup app, or a password that is reported as incorrect can all result from band compatibility rather than a bad router. There is no broadly applicable failure-rate statistic for this behavior; the practical evidence is the compatibility guidance from router and device manufacturers.

Situation Best starting choice Reason
Modern phones, computers and smart devices connect reliably Keep Smart Connect on One SSID preserves roaming convenience and avoids extra network management.
A 2.4 GHz-only device cannot be discovered or joined Temporarily split the bands A clearly named 2.4 GHz SSID makes onboarding deterministic.
The problem recurs, or many constrained devices are present Use separate SSIDs or a dedicated IoT SSID Devices have a fixed compatible path instead of relying on steering.
Your router offers a selectable IoT network Prefer the IoT network when it fits your devices You can keep the main SSID simple while assigning smart-home gear to a 2.4 GHz network.

Apple recommends one unique SSID across supported bands for reliable general connectivity, so splitting an entire home network is not automatically an improvement. Change the arrangement when a real compatibility or onboarding problem justifies the added management.

Three practical ways to make onboarding work

1. Split the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz SSIDs temporarily

  1. Open your router’s administration app or web interface.
  2. Open the Wi-Fi, Wireless or Advanced Wireless settings.
  3. Find Smart Connect, band steering or a similarly named option and disable it. ASUS and NETGEAR both note that labels and behavior vary by model and firmware.
  4. Give the bands distinct names, such as Home-2G and Home-5G, while keeping the security mode and password compatible with your devices.
  5. Connect the setup phone to the 2.4 GHz SSID, reset the smart device if necessary, and run its onboarding process again.
  6. After the device is working, decide whether to leave the split in place or restore one SSID. Restoring Smart Connect may require reconnecting clients because the network identity or saved band preference has changed.

2. Create a dedicated IoT network

Some routers provide a separate IoT network with independent band controls. TP-Link documents an IoT network intended for devices such as smart lights and cameras, with selectable 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz options. Choose 2.4 GHz for products that require it, then follow the router’s isolation and local-access settings carefully: excessive isolation can prevent a phone, hub or controller on the main network from reaching the device.

3. Keep Smart Connect and fix the individual device

If the device supports both bands, leave Smart Connect enabled and check simpler causes first: confirm the Wi-Fi password, move the device near the router during setup, disable a phone’s cellular connection if the app mishandles handoff, and follow the device maker’s reset procedure. These steps do not turn a dual-band product into a 2.4 GHz-only product; they merely remove common onboarding variables.

How to force a router to use 2.4 GHz

The reliable method is to expose a distinct 2.4 GHz SSID or select 2.4 GHz in a dedicated IoT-network setting. A phone’s Wi-Fi screen cannot force a hidden band when both radios advertise the same SSID; the router controls that decision. Menu names differ by manufacturer, model and firmware, so consult the exact manual before assuming Smart Connect can be disabled.

After changing settings, verify the result in the router’s connected-device list. Look for the device’s band or radio assignment, then test the control app from the location where you will normally use it. A device that connects only when it is beside the router may still have a coverage or interference problem rather than a band-selection problem.

Trade-offs of separate networks

  • Reliability: A fixed 2.4 GHz SSID removes ambiguity for band-limited devices.
  • Convenience: Phones and laptops may require manual network changes, especially when configuring devices.
  • Roaming: One SSID is simpler for mobile clients moving through the house; separate names can interrupt that experience.
  • Security and control: An IoT network can reduce unnecessary access to the main network, but isolation settings must still allow required local control.
  • Maintenance: More SSIDs mean more passwords, saved-network entries and troubleshooting paths.

A concise decision checklist

  • Is the device explicitly 2.4 GHz-only?
  • Does its setup app require the phone to be on the same band or local network?
  • Does the router offer a dedicated IoT SSID with a 2.4 GHz choice?
  • Will household phones and laptops benefit from seamless roaming?
  • Are you willing to maintain additional network names?

Keep Smart Connect on when all clients connect and configure normally. Disable it or split the bands when a particular smart-home device cannot join, repeatedly drops, or cannot be discovered. Choose a dedicated IoT network when the router supports one and its access controls match the way you need to control your devices.
