A smart birdhouse let WIRED commerce editor Kat Merck follow black-capped chickadees from nest excavation through fledging—but it did not capture every event or make the experience hands-off. Her 2026 season with the Birdfy Nest Duo showed the value of interior and entrance cameras, alongside practical complications involving the floor design, heat, and missed motion-sensor recordings.
What the cameras showed across one nesting season
Merck installed the Birdfy Nest Duo on the West Coast in March, using its 1-inch entrance and a pole stand. Chickadees visited repeatedly without settling. She suspected the visible perforations in the adjustable metal floor tray might be putting them off. After she covered the holes with moss mat, one bird began excavating within hours. That was her own improvised change, not a controlled test or manufacturer-approved instruction; she noted that the mat might also impede drainage if the box leaked.
Excavation took about four to five days. The birds then spent roughly a week gathering moss, followed by fur. With the two camera views, Merck could watch activity inside the cavity and at the entrance, including nest-building and the later care of the young. She also observed the parents bringing spiders to nestlings and removing or eating fecal sacs; those are her observations, not independently established findings in the available reporting.

Four young remained at fledging. Merck saw the mother carry one apparently living chick out of the nest, but the footage did not establish what happened to the other missing nestlings. She concluded that the motion sensor did not record every event, so a camera record should not be mistaken for a complete account of what happened.

Merck described the experience as unusually educational: “Being able to watch the entire nesting operation from all angles, starting with excavation and egg-laying and ending in hatching and fledging, has been one of the most educational and entertaining bird-watching experiences I have ever had, and something I’d recommend to anyone interested in birds, nature, or just life science in general.” (WIRED, August 24, 2026.)
How heat complicated remote monitoring
During a late-May heat wave, the box’s displayed temperature reached about 96°F, according to Merck. She cited 107°F as a potentially fatal temperature for cavity-nesting fledglings; that figure is reported here as her cited threshold, not as independently verified wildlife guidance. She used ice packs and an umbrella to cool the box while recognizing that intervening could disturb the birds. Her experience also raises a design consideration: the Nest Duo’s black exterior may absorb heat in warmer climates.

The app’s thermometer and hygrometer gave her readings to monitor, but remote visibility did not remove the need to make decisions about the birds’ immediate environment. The reported season cannot establish how often the box would overheat in other locations or conditions.
What the Nest Duo offers—and what to check
Birdfy currently describes the Nest Duo as a dual-camera smart birdhouse with interior and exterior views, remote camera control, and an included 5W solar panel. Its product page lists 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, 1080p/FHD video language, and a 2MP camera specification. Birdfy lists four interchangeable entrance and predator-guard sizes: 0.9, 1.1, 1.5, and 2.0 inches. Merck described the unit as roughly 16 inches tall and 8 pounds. During her experience, she could share 20-second clips with audio and download and share them without a subscription. Birdfy’s current page describes cloud clip availability during a story and a 30-day download window after a story ends. Those descriptions do not establish a permanent storage guarantee, so check the app’s current terms and behavior before relying on clips being retained.
Birdfy lists the Nest Duo at $279.99 on its product page at access; WIRED listed buying options at about $280 when its review appeared on August 24, 2026. These are price snapshots, not durable prices. Merck said both cameras stayed connected throughout her season, but that is one user’s experience, not a guarantee of connectivity at other homes.

Who should consider a camera-equipped birdhouse?
The Nest Duo makes most sense for someone who values seeing both nest-cavity activity and arrivals at the entrance, and who is prepared to evaluate placement, heat exposure, connection quality, and the interior design. A pole stand and remote camera control can reduce routine handling, but they do not make monitoring consequence-free: Merck’s cooling interventions were intended to address heat while potentially disturbing the birds.

- Consider the two-camera view if watching nest-building and entrance activity is central to your interest.
- Assess local exposure before choosing a location, particularly where a dark exterior may receive substantial heat.
- Look closely at the interior and understand how the adjustable floor is configured; Merck’s response to the perforations was an individual experiment, not a general recommendation.
- Plan for connectivity and storage limits rather than assuming the camera will record every event or retain clips indefinitely.
- Check installation and predator protection for your setting. The review used a pole stand, but it did not provide authoritative placement guidance or establish a compatible stand model.
Merck also mentioned Birdfy’s single-camera Nest, a solid-fir version, and the Polygon. Her persistent connection problems occurred with the Polygon she tested, so that experience should not be generalized to every model in the line. The account supports choosing based on camera perspective, mounting needs, and local design and heat concerns; it is not a controlled comparison among models.

What this account can—and cannot—tell you
This is one reviewer’s account of one season, not a scientific study or a guarantee of how a particular birdhouse will perform elsewhere. It documents how the cameras helped her follow a family’s nesting activity, while also showing that sensor footage was incomplete and that monitoring raised questions about heat and intervention. The available account does not determine the fate of every missing chick or establish a universal safe temperature threshold.
