Small satellite launch vehicles are rockets designed to place relatively light spacecraft into low Earth orbit (LEO). They trade the very high capacity of heavy launchers for simpler infrastructure, flexible mission planning and the possibility of shorter turnaround. Their basic trick is staging: empty tanks, engines and structures are dropped after use so later stages can accelerate less mass.

Skyroot’s Vikram-I illustrates the modern approach. It has four stages—three solid-propellant stages and a restartable liquid fourth stage powered by the Raman-I engine. ISRO’s SSLV follows a similar three-solid-stage architecture but adds a liquid Velocity Trimming Module (VTM) and publishes capacity of up to 500 kg to a 500 km planar orbit. Neither headline payload number is a universal promise: the usable mass depends on orbit, inclination, mission profile, schedule and provider availability.

What a small satellite launch vehicle is

A small launch vehicle is sized for payloads that do not need a large rocket. Most missions target LEO, where satellites orbit a few hundred kilometres above Earth and support imaging, communications, science and technology demonstrations. Reaching orbit is difficult because the vehicle must build enormous horizontal velocity while overcoming gravity and atmospheric drag. A rocket therefore flies a programmed trajectory rather than simply going straight up.

The vehicle lifts vertically to clear the launch area, gradually pitches over and accelerates downrange. Guidance computers continuously compare the actual path with the planned one and command engine steering or attitude-control thrusters. As propellant is consumed, the rocket becomes lighter, improving acceleration. When a stage is empty, pyrotechnic or mechanical separation systems discard it; carrying that dead mass farther would waste propellant.

Why staging matters

Each stage contains tanks, propellant, engines, avionics and structure. After its burn, that hardware has no useful role in reaching orbit. Separating it lets the next stage use its propellant on a smaller vehicle. Small launchers commonly combine solid stages, which are compact and can remain stored for long periods, with a liquid upper or terminal stage that offers more precise control.

Solid and liquid propulsion in one vehicle

A solid motor generally provides high thrust with comparatively simple plumbing, but its burn is normally programmed before ignition and cannot be throttled or restarted in the same way as a liquid engine. A liquid stage can meter propellant, steer accurately and perform one or more burns after the main ascent. That combination gives a compact launcher strong initial acceleration and a controllable final orbit-insertion phase.

How a launch proceeds from liftoff to orbit

  1. Liftoff and atmospheric ascent: The first stage produces thrust greater than the vehicle’s weight. The rocket climbs through dense air while guidance limits structural loads and keeps the trajectory within approved corridors.
  2. Pitch-over and acceleration: The flight path transitions from mostly vertical to mostly horizontal. Building orbital speed, rather than altitude alone, is the central objective.
  3. Stage burnout and separation: When a stage has completed its burn, it separates. The next stage ignites or continues the sequence without the empty motor case and tanks.
  4. Fairing separation: Once the atmosphere is thin enough, the protective payload fairing can be released, removing another source of dead mass.
  5. Upper-stage targeting: The upper or terminal stage performs the precise burn that sets altitude, inclination and orbital shape. A restartable stage can coast and burn again, allowing more than one deployment opportunity or a correction to the final orbit.
  6. Payload deployment: The launcher releases one spacecraft or a group of spacecraft using a mission-specific dispenser. The satellite then completes commissioning with its own propulsion and attitude-control systems.

Orbit is a three-dimensional requirement. Altitude determines the size and period of the orbit, while inclination determines which latitudes the spacecraft can pass over. A payload that fits within a rocket’s mass limit may still require a different launcher if its requested inclination, deployment timing or separation conditions are incompatible.

What the restart capability changes

Restartability means the liquid upper stage can shut down, coast and ignite again for a later manoeuvre, subject to the mission’s guidance and propellant budget. That is useful when a mission needs separate deployment events, a more exact orbital insertion or delivery of satellites to different orbital conditions. It does not mean the rocket can remain in orbit indefinitely or correct any payload requirement without limits; every additional burn consumes propellant and must be planned into the trajectory.

Published Vikram-I capacity

Skyroot’s current launch-services information advertises up to 350 kg to LEO for a dedicated Vikram-I mission. It also lists rideshare slots for payloads up to 50 kg each and access to low-to-mid inclinations from India. These are provider-published capability figures, not a guarantee that every 350 kg spacecraft can fly to every LEO orbit. Payload adapter mass, orbit altitude, inclination, injection accuracy and mission reserves affect the deliverable mass.

Vikram-I’s reported orbital milestone

According to ISRO’s official report, Vikram-I lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre on July 18, 2026, at 12:05:30 PM. The flight made Skyroot the first private Indian company to achieve an orbital launch from Indian soil. SCOPE and Grahaa were injected into LEO, while other payloads supported in-orbit experiments. This is a demonstrated orbital flight milestone; it should not be read as a lifetime reliability statistic or as proof that every future mission will have the same outcome.

What the VTM does

ISRO specifies eight 50 N thrusters for reaction control and eight 50 N axial 50 N thrusters for velocity addition. The reaction-control thrusters help orient the vehicle between burns and during payload-release operations; the axial thrusters provide the final increment of velocity needed to establish the target orbit. This liquid module gives the solid-stage vehicle fine control without changing the architecture of the three main motors.

SSLV flight and hardware updates

SSLV-D2 successfully placed EOS-07, Janus-1 and AzaadiSAT-2 into a 450 km circular orbit on February 10, 2023. ISRO presents SSLV as low-cost, quick to turn around, flexible for multiple satellites and suitable for launch-on-demand commercialization, with minimal launch infrastructure requirements.

On December 30, 2025, ISRO static-tested an improved SS3 stage. Its carbon-epoxy motor case reduced stage mass and was reported to improve SSLV payload performance by 90 kg. The 108-second test recorded about 233 measurements and qualified the stage for flight induction. The 90 kg figure describes the reported performance improvement from that stage change; it is not a new universal payload rating for every orbit.

Vikram-I versus SSLV: which differences matter?

A 350 kg dedicated Vikram-I mission and a 500 kg SSLV mission are not interchangeable services. The relevant choice depends on the spacecraft, desired orbit, deployment strategy and launch date.

Published capacity is only one screening criterion. A smaller vehicle may be preferable when a dedicated mission, a particular inclination or a restartable upper stage reduces integration compromises. A larger nominal capacity may be more useful when several spacecraft can share a dispenser and accept the same 500 km planar orbit.

How much can a small rocket really carry?

Use the advertised number as an upper-bound starting point, then ask what orbit and mission conditions it assumes. For Vikram-I, 350 kg refers to the advertised maximum to LEO for a dedicated mission, while 50 kg refers to an individual rideshare slot. For SSLV, 500 kg is specified for one satellite to a 500 km planar orbit; its published multiple-satellite mode spans 10 kg to 300 kg into that same orbit.

The spacecraft mass budget must include the payload adapter or dispenser interface and any separation hardware charged to the launch service. A higher altitude, a different inclination or additional orbital manoeuvres generally require more launch energy. The provider must also reserve performance for guidance dispersions, environmental conditions and mission safety. Consequently, a booking conversation should use the exact spacecraft mass, dimensions, centre of gravity, requested orbit and deployment sequence rather than a headline capacity alone.

Can these rockets launch satellites on demand?

Small launchers are designed to make launch-on-demand more practical, but “on demand” does not mean an instant launch. The vehicle, launch site, range approval, payload processing, export or regulatory clearances and available slot all have to align. ISRO lists launch-on-demand feasibility as an SSLV feature, while Skyroot’s launch-services material says its 2026 manifest is filling.

Skyroot’s stated commercial path

  1. Execute an NDA: Protect mission and spacecraft information during technical discussions.
  2. Provide mission details: Share payload mass and dimensions, orbit, inclination, deployment plan, interfaces and schedule.
  3. Receive a quotation and consultation: The provider evaluates compatibility and proposes a service configuration.
  4. Sign a Launch Service Agreement: The agreement defines responsibilities, interfaces, milestones and the commercial commitment.

Skyroot’s cited launch-services information does not publish prices or an affiliate commission programme. A manifest statement is an indication of scheduling demand, not a guaranteed date for a new customer. Ask for a firm slot, payment milestones, acceptance criteria and remedies for delay in the Launch Service Agreement.

A practical mission-selection checklist

  • Orbit: Specify altitude, circular or elliptical shape, inclination and allowed injection tolerances.
  • Payload: Confirm wet mass, dimensions, centre of gravity, structural loads, vibration limits and electromagnetic constraints.
  • Deployment: Decide whether the spacecraft needs a dedicated launch, a rideshare slot or separation at several points in the mission.
  • Propulsion needs: Determine whether a restartable upper stage or a particular velocity-trimming profile materially improves the mission.
  • Schedule: Check actual vehicle availability, range windows, spacecraft readiness and regulatory lead times.
  • Integration: Obtain the payload user guide, interface drawings, testing requirements, hazardous-material rules and data deadlines.
  • Evidence: Separate demonstrated flights from advertised capability and request current verification for the exact mission profile.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Treating payload capacity as a universal constant

Fix the orbit first, then request a performance analysis for that orbit. The 350 kg and 500 kg figures carry different altitude and mission qualifications.

Assuming rideshare is equivalent to a dedicated launch

Rideshare usually trades cost and access for less control over launch timing, deployment sequence and final orbital conditions. Verify the dispenser interface, separation timing and any orbit-raising work the spacecraft must perform itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming restartability means unlimited precision

A restartable stage expands the available manoeuvre plan, but it has finite propellant, thermal limits, guidance constraints and a defined number of planned burns. Ask for the allowed coast duration, restart plan and injection accuracy for your mission.

Confusing a successful demonstration with guaranteed reliability

Vikram-I’s reported July 2026 orbital success and SSLV-D2’s 2023 mission are important flight evidence. They do not replace a provider’s current reliability statistics, acceptance tests, insurance requirements and contractual remedies.

The key takeaway for mission planners

Small launch vehicles work by combining aggressive mass reduction, multiple stages and a controllable final insertion phase. Vikram-I uses three solid stages and a restartable liquid Raman-I upper stage, with Skyroot advertising 350 kg to LEO or rideshare slots up to 50 kg. SSLV uses three HTPB solid stages and a liquid VTM, with ISRO specifying up to 500 kg to a 500 km planar orbit and a 10 kg-to-300 kg multiple-satellite mode. Choose between them only after matching the exact orbit, payload interface, deployment plan, schedule and evidence of availability.
