Choose a small diesel model-aircraft engine from the airframe outward, not from cubic capacity alone. First identify whether the model is free flight, control line or RC, then establish its ready-to-fly weight, the low-speed thrust it needs and the propeller sizes that physically fit. Select an engine whose manual documents a compatible propeller range, fuel formula, mounting arrangement and adjustment procedure.
For orientation, a 1.5 cc diesel is aimed at control-line and free-flight models, while Sharma lists a 3.2 cc diesel at 183 g with an 8×6–9×6 propeller range. Those figures are starting points rather than a universal size chart: Model Aviation’s comparison says that the airplane has more influence on optimum propeller size and pitch than the engine’s size and type.
What a model diesel engine is, and where it fits
A model diesel is a compression-ignition engine. It has no spark plug or electronic ignition; the mixture is ignited by heat created when the compression is increased. A contra-piston or compression screw changes the compression ratio for starting and running. A fuel needle controls mixture flow, and the propeller supplies the load against which the engine is tuned.
Model diesels are especially associated with free-flight and control-line models, where simple equipment, a distinctive exhaust note and strong low-speed torque are useful. Small RC installations are possible when the engine has an appropriate carburetor, throttle arrangement, mounting system and parts support. Do not assume that an engine intended for free flight can be converted into a practical RC powerplant merely because its displacement appears suitable.

Discipline changes the buying decision
- Free flight: weight, reliable starting and a propeller that produces efficient climb are usually more important than throttle response. The engine may be run at a fixed setting.
- Control line: the model must pull continuously through the circle. Propeller loading, fuel draw and mounting strength matter, and the product description should explicitly mention control-line use.
- RC: throttle response, a compatible carburetor, tank position, vibration control and an accessible compression adjustment become important. Confirm that the manufacturer supports the intended installation.
How much displacement do you need?
Displacement is the swept volume of the cylinder, expressed in cubic centimetres (cc). More displacement generally permits more torque and a larger or more heavily loaded propeller, but it also usually adds weight, fuel consumption and installation demands. A smaller engine can outperform a larger one in a lightweight airframe if the larger engine forces an unsuitable centre of gravity or propeller.
Start with the airframe
- Weigh the finished model. Include engine, mount, tank, fuel lines, propeller, spinner, battery and any radio equipment. Use the ready-to-fly mass, not the advertised kit weight.
- Identify the required flight behaviour. A scale model needing brisk level speed has a different requirement from a free-flight model that must climb at low airspeed. Write down whether thrust, acceleration, top speed or endurance is the priority.
- Measure the propeller envelope. Check fuselage, landing gear, cowling and ground-clearance limits. A recommended diameter is useless if the airframe cannot turn it safely.
- Check the engine documentation. Reject an engine if its published propeller range, mounting pattern, fuel instructions or intended discipline cannot be matched to the model.
What the documented examples suggest
| Engine or reference | Displacement and intended use | Documented propeller information | Other stated data |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sharma diesel | 1.5 cc; listed for control-line and free-flight models | Not stated on the cited product information | Mounting and weight not stated in the cited information |
| Sharma diesel | 3.2 cc | 8×6 to 9×6 | 183 g |
| PAW .03 example | .03 cu in class | 6×3 at the small end; 10×4 Graupner example | Examples reported by Model Aviation, 1998 |
| Model Aviation comparison | .19 and .40 engine classes | Graupner 9×4 on .19 engines; 12×5 on .40 engines | Comparison published in 2011; sizes are test examples, not a universal chart |
The table demonstrates why a displacement-only recommendation is unsafe. The same nominal engine size can be used with different propellers depending on the model, gearing (if any), airframe drag and the manufacturer’s operating limits. Treat every listed diameter and pitch as a documented example tied to its source, not as permission to fit any propeller with the same engine.
Propeller diameter and pitch: the practical choice
Diameter is the distance across the disc swept by the blades; pitch is the theoretical distance a propeller would advance in one revolution through a solid medium. In model use, changing either dimension alters thrust, acceleration, current or fuel load, and engine speed.

How the trade-off works
- A larger diameter or lower pitch generally increases static thrust and acceleration, which helps a heavy model or a short take-off. It also increases torque demand and may reduce maximum rpm.
- A smaller diameter or higher pitch generally favours airspeed and can reduce torque demand, but may provide less static pull and poorer acceleration.
- Diameter, pitch, blade area and airfoil all matter. Two propellers marked with the same dimensions can load an engine differently.
Model Aviation’s 2011 comparison states that the airplane has more influence on optimum prop size and pitch than the engine’s size and type. Use that principle after checking the engine manual: the airframe sets the target, while the manufacturer sets the safe operating window.
Use a documented range, not a guess
For the Sharma 3.2 cc diesel, the published range is 8×6–9×6. That gives a useful starting pair for an airframe able to clear those diameters. The smaller propeller may suit a lighter or faster model; the larger disc may provide more pull if the engine can turn it within its specified range. The 1.5 cc listing identifies control-line and free-flight use but does not establish a propeller range in the cited product information, so obtain the manual or ask the manufacturer before buying.
The PAW .03 examples reported by Model Aviation include a 6×3 at the small end and a 10×4 Graupner propeller. Those dimensions span very different loads and model requirements; they should not be interpreted as a recommendation to fit the largest size without checking rpm, clearance and the engine maker’s limits.

Propeller selection procedure
- Read the engine manual and write down its approved diameter-and-pitch range.
- Remove any size that fails the model’s ground-clearance, cowling or landing-gear requirements.
- Choose the lower-load option within the range for initial running if the manual permits it. A conservative load makes starting and tuning easier.
- After the engine is fully run in, evaluate acceleration, climb and maximum rpm. Change only one propeller variable at a time.
- Stop immediately if the engine overheats, will not reach a stable speed, or shows signs of detonation or mechanical distress. A propeller that produces impressive static pull can still overload the engine.
Fuel: ether, kerosene and lubricant
Model diesels need a volatile ignition component, a heavier petroleum component and lubricant. Ether helps the mixture ignite under compression; kerosene contributes energy and moderates volatility; castor oil provides lubrication and retains protective film at high temperature. Fuel components are hazardous and their sale, transport and storage rules vary by country.
Common starting formulas
| Use | Ether | Castor oil | Kerosene | Source qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Typical modern-diesel starting blend | Approximately one-third | Approximately one-third | Approximately one-third | Model Aviation Library, 1998; approximate guidance |
| Simple equal-parts recipe | One part | One part | One part | Model Aviation Library, 1990; castor identified as a suitable lubricant |
| MP JET .061 running-in fuel | 40% | 40% | 20% | MP JET operating manual, 2012; engine-specific instruction |
| MP JET .061 sport fuel | 40% | 35% | 25% | MP JET operating manual, 2012; engine-specific instruction |
The equal-parts blend is a historical starting point, not a universal specification. The MP JET .061 BB/RC manual demonstrates why the engine’s own instructions take priority: its running-in and sport formulas differ from the equal-parts guidance.
Why ether percentage matters
The MP JET manual warns that too little ether prevents correct tuning, creates unstable speed and can lead to overheating and insufficient power. For maximum output, it allows 2%–3% amyl nitrate or isopropyl nitrite and says that even 0.5% substantially improves starting, running and output. Treat those additives as optional, engine-specific instructions, not as ingredients to add by trial and error.

Fuel handling checklist
- Follow the exact fuel formula and additive instructions supplied with your engine.
- Mix only in a clearly labelled, compatible container and keep fuel away from flames, sparks, hot exhausts and ignition sources.
- Use ventilation and appropriate chemical-resistant gloves and eye protection.
- Keep ether-containing fuel out of reach of children and away from heat; comply with local rules for storage and transport.
- Do not substitute automotive diesel, lamp oil or unknown premixed fuel without confirmation that its volatility, lubrication and contamination level suit the engine.
- Filter fuel before it reaches the tank and carburetor, and discard fuel that is cloudy, contaminated or has absorbed water.
Compression, needle and starting
A small diesel normally starts with more compression than it needs once warm. The compression screw is backed off or adjusted after ignition is established, while the needle is tuned for the selected propeller load. Compression and mixture settings interact, so changing one can require readjusting the other.
Methodical cold-start sequence
- Secure the model. Use a proper test stand or firmly restrained airframe. Keep hands, clothing and cables behind the propeller disc.
- Install the approved propeller. Tighten the spinner or nut correctly and confirm that the propeller has no cracks or damage.
- Prime sparingly. Use the manual’s priming method. Excess fuel can hydraulically lock the cylinder or make the engine difficult to turn.
- Set high starting compression. Turn the compression adjustment only as instructed; do not force it against its stop.
- Open the needle to the specified starting position. An unknown setting is a reason to consult the manual, not to keep turning until the engine fires.
- Turn the propeller through the compression point. Use the approved starting stick or electric starter procedure and keep fingers away from the blade path.
- Reduce compression and tune the needle together once running. Seek a stable speed under the chosen load, then make small adjustments while monitoring heat and response.
Technical guidance commonly describes this as a two-stage process: establish compression first, then set the needle. Cold conditions may require more compression, while a warm engine often needs less. The exact positions are engine-specific.
Break-in and maintenance
Use the running-in fuel and propeller specified by the manufacturer, and vary speed rather than holding a new engine at an extreme setting. Allow cooling pauses. Inspect mounting screws, fuel lines, tank plumbing and the propeller after each session. The MP JET manual states, “In principle, do not disassemble the engine.” That is a useful warning against unnecessary stripping; clean and service it only according to the supplied instructions.

Mounting, weight and support checks
An engine that fits the displacement requirement can still be a poor purchase if its mounting format or support ecosystem does not match the model. Before ordering, confirm the following:
- Weight and balance: include the engine, mount, muffler or exhaust parts, tank and fuel. The published 183 g figure for the Sharma 3.2 cc model should be treated as the engine’s stated weight, not the complete installation mass.
- Mounting pattern: measure lug spacing, bolt size, crankshaft height and required firewall offset.
- Carburetor arrangement: verify whether the engine has a throttle-capable carburetor or a fixed venturi intended for free flight or control line.
- Compression access: make sure the compression screw remains reachable with the cowl installed.
- Manual and parts: look for an operating manual, needle and contra-piston parts, bearings, gaskets and a documented service contact.
- Vibration control: use a rigid mount with suitable reinforcement and thread retention where the manufacturer recommends it. Recheck fasteners frequently.
Availability and how to buy responsibly
Sharma currently lists 1.5 cc and 3.2 cc diesel products, and MP JET provides a detailed .061 BB/RC operating manual. PAW is repeatedly identified in Model Aviation material as an established diesel manufacturer. These references help you identify plausible engine families, but they do not establish current stock in your country.
Marketplace stock, prices, seller quality and shipping of ether-containing products were not verified. Before paying, confirm the seller’s current inventory, the exact engine version, included accessories, warranty or return terms, and whether fuel components can legally be shipped to your address. Ask for a dated photograph or serial-number information when listings are unclear.

Troubleshooting by symptom
It will not start
- Check that fuel is reaching the carburetor and that the tank vent is open.
- Verify the fuel formula, especially ether content; insufficient ether can prevent correct ignition.
- Use the manual’s cold-start compression and priming procedure.
- Inspect the glow-plug-equivalent parts: a diesel has no spark plug, so focus on compression, fuel delivery, contra-piston movement and air leaks.
It starts but runs erratically
- Retune compression and needle together rather than turning only one adjustment repeatedly.
- Look for an air leak at the tank, fuel line, carburetor or backplate.
- Check for an overloaded propeller, damaged blade or excessive vibration.
- Confirm that fuel is clean and that the filter is not restricted.
It overheats or loses power
- Stop running and allow the engine to cool.
- Check for low ether percentage, an excessively lean needle setting or a propeller outside the approved range.
- Recheck cooling airflow and cowl clearance.
- Do not add ignition improver or alter the fuel until the engine manual specifically permits it.
A concise buying decision
Choose the lightest engine whose documented propeller range can deliver the airframe’s required thrust without violating clearance or rpm limits. A 1.5 cc listing is a sensible lead for a small control-line or free-flight model when its missing propeller data can be confirmed. A 3.2 cc engine with a stated 183 g weight and 8×6–9×6 range is more appropriate when the model can carry that installation and turn those propellers. For any engine, the manual’s fuel and adjustment instructions outrank generic equal-parts recipes or internet propeller charts.
