For most RV owners looking for a compact drill/driver, the Milwaukee M12 Subcompact Brushless 3/8-inch Drill/Driver (3401-20) is the strongest starting point: Milwaukee lists it at 5.4 inches long, with a 3/8-inch metal chuck, 350 in-lbs of torque and up to 1,550 RPM. Those are manufacturer specifications, not proof that it will fit your toolbox or outperform another drill in an RV repair. Measure your storage space—including the opening—and check the drill with its battery attached before buying.
How to choose a small drill for an RV toolbox
Compactness matters only if the drill fits the space where you plan to store it and can handle the tasks you expect to do. Compare the tool’s full dimensions with your toolbox, then consider its chuck, working weight, battery platform and published performance.
- Measure the toolbox. Check the opening as well as the interior length, height and width. Compare those clearances with the drill and battery installed; a tool that fits inside may still be difficult to get through the opening.
- Choose the interface for your bits. A 3/8-inch three-jaw chuck accepts standard round-shank bits within its capacity. A 1/4-inch hex quick-change interface is designed for hex-shank bits and driver accessories, not the same setup as a conventional drill chuck.
- Compare working weight. Look for a weight that includes the battery you will use. Tool-only weights are not directly comparable with figures that include a battery.
- Check the battery and package. If you already own compatible batteries, platform compatibility may make a bare tool practical. If you are starting fresh, a kit may be more convenient. Verify the exact contents of the listing before ordering.
- Match the tool to the work. Published torque and speed can help distinguish models, but they do not guarantee results for a particular material, bit or repair.

The listed weights are not an apples-to-apples ranking: Milwaukee describes the 3401-20 as under two pounds with a battery, while Bosch lists the PS31N at 1.8 pounds tool-only and the PS21N at 1.4 pounds tool-only. The cited manufacturer pages describe specifications; they do not report RV-specific fit checks or repair testing.
Which option fits your needs?
Choose the Milwaukee 3401-20 as a compact general-purpose starting point
Its 5.4-inch listed length and 3/8-inch metal chuck make it a good first model to compare if you want a conventional compact drill/driver. Milwaukee lists 350 in-lbs and up to 1,550 RPM. These figures are useful points of comparison, not a guarantee for a specific repair. The bare-tool page says the battery is sold separately.

Consider the Bosch PS31N as another 3/8-inch chuck drill
The PS31N also has a conventional 3/8-inch chuck. Bosch lists a 7-inch head length, 265 in-lbs and up to 1,300 RPM; its 1.8-pound figure is tool-only. Compare its shape and complete battery-equipped weight with your storage space and intended use rather than relying on the head-length figure alone.
Pick the Bosch PS21N only for driving-focused needs
At 5.6 inches and 1.4 pounds tool-only, the PS21N is a pocket driver with a 1/4-inch hex quick-change interface. It can suit work centered on driving compatible hex bits, but it is not a substitute for a three-jaw chuck drill when your task needs that interface.

Trade minimum size for a 1/2-inch chuck with the Milwaukee 2503-20
The M12 FUEL 2503-20 is listed at 6.6 inches, 2.3 pounds and 350 in-lbs, with a 1/2-inch chuck. It is worth comparing if chuck capacity matters more to you than minimizing size; its listing does not make it the smallest option here.

The models compared here are 12V tools. This comparison does not establish that a 12V drill is sufficient for every RV job or that an 18V model would be too large. Choose based on the work you expect to do, storage clearance and batteries you already own. If you are considering an 18V drill, compare its actual dimensions and battery-equipped weight with the same measurements—not voltage alone.

Drill/driver or impact driver?
A drill/driver with a three-jaw chuck is the flexible choice when you need to use conventional drill bits as well as drive screws with compatible bits. A hex pocket driver such as the Bosch PS21N is a more specialized choice for hex-bit driving tasks. These product pages do not establish that one type is best for every RV repair; match the interface and tool to the bits and work you expect to handle.
Bare tool or kit?
The Milwaukee 3401-20 listing is explicitly a bare tool, and Milwaukee says the M12 battery is sold separately. The separate 3401-22 listing is a kit. If you already have compatible batteries, a bare tool may avoid buying another battery; if you do not, a kit may be more practical. Retailer listings can differ, so confirm the exact battery, charger and other included items before purchase.

Measure before you order
- Measure the toolbox opening and the usable interior in all three dimensions.
- Check the drill’s dimensions with the battery attached, including any protrusions that could catch at the opening.
- Compare complete working weight using the battery you intend to install.
- Confirm whether you need a 3/8-inch chuck or a 1/4-inch hex interface.
- Verify battery compatibility and the package contents on the exact listing you plan to buy.
Milwaukee describes the 3401-20 as its “most compact and lightest weight drill/driver” on the manufacturer page. That is Milwaukee’s own product claim, not an independently established ranking across the models above. Regardless of the claim, only your measurements can tell you whether the tool will fit your RV toolbox.
