A small business can build a useful marketing toolkit without paying for every category of software. Start with the job you need done: local discovery, website measurement, design, social scheduling or customer email. Use free options where they fit, check their limits against your actual workload, and add paid plans only when a constraint is costing you time or preventing necessary work.
Which marketing tools belong in a lean starting stack?
Choose tools by business goal, not by the number of categories in a list. A local service provider may need a business listing and a way to measure website visits; a shop that publishes regularly may also need design and social scheduling. Email becomes relevant when you have a permission-based audience and a reason to contact it.
The May 2026 Tajo guide to free marketing tools recommends starting with a goal, choosing tools that connect, and upgrading after a free limit becomes restrictive. That is a practical way to keep the stack manageable: adopt one tool for a real task, learn its workflow, and add another only when a gap remains.

- Search and site measurement: Google Search Console reports how a site appears in Google Search, while Google Analytics 4 measures website activity. They answer different questions; neither creates traffic by itself. See Search Console and Google Analytics.
- Design: Canva provides a free plan for creating visual materials, with paid tiers for additional assets and capabilities.
- Social scheduling: Buffer is one option for planning and scheduling social posts; evaluate its channel limits and features against your publishing routine.
- Customer email: Brevo is an option for email and SMS communication, with free-plan limits that should be checked before relying on them.
These categories are not a mandatory bundle. For example, a business that does not maintain a website may have little use for website analytics, while an owner who posts infrequently may not benefit from a separate scheduling subscription.

How should you assess a free plan?
“Free” describes a price, not whether a plan will handle your work. Before signing up, compare the limits that match your use case and consider the cost of moving later if your audience or workload grows.
- Capacity: Check contacts, email sends, scheduled posts, channels and storage or asset access.
- Features: Find out whether the free plan includes the automation, reporting, integrations or export options you need.
- People: Check whether collaboration is limited by seats, permissions or shared workspaces.
- Workflow fit: Confirm that the tool connects to your website or customer records, and that you can use it consistently with the time available.
- Upgrade cost: Work out the likely total using your number of contacts, sends, channels, users and billing term—not just the lowest advertised starting figure.
A paid plan may make sense when a free-tier cap interrupts a recurring task, when a paid feature solves a specific operational problem, or when the time saved is worth the subscription. If none of those conditions applies, keep the free setup or skip the category.
Which tools fit each marketing job?
Local visibility and website measurement
For a business serving customers in a defined area, Google Business Profile is a starting point for managing local information. Search Console and Analytics 4 are relevant if you have a website and want to understand search visibility and site activity. These are separate functions: Search Console concerns Google Search performance; Analytics 4 concerns activity measured on the site.

- Used Book in Good Condition
The cited May 2026 tool guide describes these Google tools as free. Set them up only where applicable, and treat their reports as information for making decisions—not as a promise of improved rankings, leads or revenue.
Email and SMS communication
Brevo may suit a business that wants to send customer email or SMS from one service. Tajo’s guide, updated May 17, 2026, reports that Brevo’s free plan included unlimited contacts and up to 300 emails per day at that time. This is dated, secondary-source plan information; confirm the current sending cap, features and terms on Brevo’s pricing page before building a workflow around it.
A contact limit and a sending limit are different: unlimited stored contacts do not mean unlimited daily messages. Also, a tool’s free tier does not establish permission to collect or message people. Make sure your list and messaging practices meet the requirements that apply to your business and location.

Visual design
Canva’s Free plan can cover basic visual-creation needs; its paid Pro and Business tiers add different combinations of assets, templates, AI allowances and collaboration features. The Canva pricing page describes Free as available to anyone, positions Pro for solo creators and Business for individuals and small teams, and notes that offerings can evolve. It lists more than 1.6 million templates and more than 4.7 million stock photos, graphics, fonts, video and audio assets for Free; those are Canva-reported inventory figures, not measures of design quality or business results.
Choose based on the materials you actually make and whether the free assets and workflow are sufficient. Check current plan details and the price shown for your billing context rather than assuming a fixed price.
Social planning and scheduling
Buffer is a candidate if planning posts across multiple social channels is a recurring task. A Buffer guide dated September 10, 2026 reports a free plan and paid plans starting at $6 per channel per month. That figure comes from a guide, not a verified current quote; check Buffer’s pricing page for current terms and calculate the cost for the channels you intend to use.

Compare social tools by supported channels, number of accounts, scheduling needs, reporting and collaboration. A solo owner who publishes occasionally may not need paid scheduling; a team coordinating regular posts may value shared workflows or additional reporting.

Google Workspace is a paid productivity suite, not a prerequisite for marketing. Its business page offers a 14-day trial and lists Starter at $7 per user per month with annual billing or $8.40 per user per month with monthly billing, in USD, as shown on October 7, 2026. The plan includes custom business email. Check Google Workspace’s business page for current availability, prices and terms.

When is it worth paying?
Upgrade when you can identify the specific limitation or benefit that justifies the recurring cost. For a fair comparison between alternatives in the same category, use the same workload assumptions:
- For email, compare expected contacts, monthly and daily sending needs, automation and reporting.
- For social scheduling, compare the number of channels and accounts, posting frequency, analytics and team access.
- For design, compare the assets and templates you need, AI allowances and collaboration features.
- For any category, include user seats, billing frequency, integrations and the time needed to maintain the workflow.
Plan details and pricing can change. Recheck the vendor’s current terms before committing, especially when a decision depends on a specific free cap or advertised starting price.
