A slow Wi-Fi connection on one PC does not automatically mean the computer needs replacing. The cause may be the PC’s adapter or settings, a weak or crowded wireless link, the router, the modem or internet service, or an app using bandwidth. Compare the PC with another device on the same network, then work through the checks below from easiest to most involved.
Is the slowdown limited to your PC?
Use the same website, app, or download on your PC and another device connected to the same Wi-Fi. This makes the comparison more useful than comparing unrelated activities. Note whether the problem is constant or intermittent and whether it involves slow downloads, delayed responses, or disconnections.
- Only the PC is slow: Start with its signal, Wi-Fi adapter, Windows settings, driver, and background network use.
- Several devices are slow: Check the router, modem, internet service, and conditions affecting the whole Wi-Fi network.
A speed-test result can help compare devices or locations, but there is no single number that establishes what every connection should achieve. The plan, service, network conditions, and task all matter. Microsoft also lists software and computer resource use among possible causes of slow internet: Microsoft’s slow-connection guidance.
Could the Wi-Fi signal or location be the problem?
Move the PC closer to the router and retry the same task. If performance improves, the wireless path—not necessarily the PC’s internet service—is a likely factor. Distance, walls and other obstructions can weaken a connection. Nearby wireless devices can also contribute to interference; Microsoft specifically notes microwave ovens and cordless phones, as well as physical sources such as metal objects and channel congestion. See Microsoft’s Wi-Fi home-layout guidance and its advice on slow internet connections.

- 𝐀𝐝𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞, 𝐌𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢-𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐧𝐚: Rotate the multi-directional antenna to face your router to improve your experience and performance
- Try the PC in a more open location with fewer walls or obstacles between it and the router.
- Retry when nearby devices that may interfere are not in use, if practical.
- If the result changes by location or time, treat that as evidence of a signal or interference issue rather than proof that the PC needs new hardware.
Should you try a different Wi-Fi band?
If your router provides both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi networks, connect the PC to the other band and compare the same task. The adapter must support the band you choose. Neither band is universally best: performance depends on the adapter, home layout, signal and interference. Microsoft explains the role of bands and home layout in its Wi-Fi guidance.
If the signal is strong and the channel seems clear but the connection is still unreliable, router channel width may be worth checking. Router menus and setting names vary by manufacturer; avoid changing advanced wireless settings unless you can identify the setting and restore its previous value. Microsoft discusses channel congestion and channel width in its home-layout guidance.

What Windows checks can help when only the PC is slow?
Microsoft’s Windows Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11. On Windows 11, begin with the Network and Internet troubleshooter in Get Help. Menu labels and layouts can differ between Windows versions and updates. See Microsoft’s Wi-Fi connection troubleshooting steps.

- Check the wireless controls. Confirm Wi-Fi is on and Airplane Mode is off.
- Reconnect to the network. Disconnect and reconnect. If that does not help, forget the network and join it again using its password.
- Look for bandwidth-heavy apps. Open Task Manager and check whether a process is using substantial network bandwidth. Pause or close a download or other activity if appropriate, then retest.
- Check the adapter in Device Manager. Look for an error or other sign that the adapter is not working correctly, and note its driver date and version.
- Use the appropriate driver source. If a driver update or reinstall is needed, check the PC manufacturer or Wi-Fi adapter manufacturer for a driver intended for your device and Windows version.
- Review adapter power saving if the issue persists. Microsoft includes disabling the adapter’s power-saving setting among possible troubleshooting steps. Treat it as a diagnostic change and restore the previous setting if it does not help.
Network reset and adapter-driver reinstallation are more involved steps, not the first things to try. Before uninstalling a driver, make sure you have a suitable manufacturer driver available so you can reinstall it if Windows does not restore a working one. Microsoft’s Windows Wi-Fi guide covers these later options.

How can the wireless network report help?
Windows can generate a wireless network report with information such as adapter capabilities, the current driver version, and a history of wireless events. It can help you or a support technician investigate connection problems; by itself, it does not prove that a particular component must be replaced. Microsoft explains how to analyze the wireless network report.

If several devices on the same network are slow, restart the modem and router according to their manufacturer’s instructions, then compare again. Check with your internet service provider for service trouble if the slowdown remains across devices.

If you can connect the PC to the modem with Ethernet, compare the connection that way. Microsoft says that internet access when the PC is connected directly to the modem over Ethernet confirms that the connection problem is due to the Wi-Fi router. This test isolates the wireless-router path; it is not a Wi-Fi repair. Microsoft’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance describes the comparison, and its Ethernet troubleshooting guide covers wired connections.
If you cannot connect directly to the modem, or the wired connection is also slow, the comparison is less conclusive. Continue checking the service and modem with your ISP rather than assuming the PC’s Wi-Fi adapter is at fault.

When should you replace a Wi-Fi adapter or router?
Consider hardware only after the comparisons point to it. An adapter replacement may be reasonable if Device Manager or a supported-band check identifies an adapter limitation or fault. Before choosing one, verify that it works with your PC, operating system and router bands, and that its connection and antenna arrangement suit the computer. The cited guidance does not establish that buying an adapter improves every slow connection.
A router replacement is more relevant when multiple devices are affected or checks point to router coverage, performance or compatibility. Check placement, settings and available firmware guidance before replacing it. An Ethernet cable can provide a wired comparison or connection if the PC and router can be connected, but it does not fix the Wi-Fi link.
