If your Android phone feels sluggish, start with a restart, updates and a storage check; then use Safe mode to see whether a downloaded app is responsible. Save a factory reset for last, because it erases local data and cannot guarantee that every app’s data will be restored. These steps can address software, storage and app problems, but they cannot guarantee performance exactly like a new phone.
Why is my Android phone so slow?
Lag, slow responses and long app loading times can have several causes, including software issues, low available storage or a downloaded app. Work through the steps below in order, restarting after each troubleshooting step and checking whether the same slowdown remains. Android settings and instructions vary by manufacturer and version, so use your phone maker’s support instructions if a generic path does not match your device.
1. Restart the phone and check what is actually slow
Restart the phone first. If the problem is limited to web pages or other internet loading, check the network connection before treating it as a general phone-performance issue. Restart-button combinations differ across Android models; even Pixel instructions vary by generation. See Google’s Android troubleshooting steps or your manufacturer’s instructions if you cannot find the right controls.
2. Install Android and app updates
- Check for an Android update: Open Settings and look for the system software update option. The exact label and location depend on the phone.
- Review app updates: Open Google Play’s app-management screen and check for available updates.
- Restart and retest: Restart after each update step, then check whether the same lag remains.
Google’s general instructions are available in its slow Android device help page; your manufacturer may use different menu names.

3. Check available storage before deleting anything
Open Settings and look for Storage to see how much space is available. Google Android Help says, “Your phone can start having issues when less than 10% of storage is free.” This is Google’s troubleshooting threshold, not a guarantee that every phone will slow down at that point.
If space is low, remove files or apps you no longer need, or move files elsewhere. On Pixel phones, Google distinguishes storage, where items such as photos and music are kept, from memory, where programs run. Its Pixel storage guidance explains ways to free space.

Be careful with app data controls
On Pixel instructions, clearing an app’s cache removes temporary data; the app may take longer to open the next time. Clearing app storage permanently deletes that app’s data. Do not clear app storage casually: first check whether the information you need is backed up or can be recovered.
4. Use Safe mode to check for a downloaded app
Safe mode temporarily turns off downloaded apps. If the phone responds better in Safe mode, a downloaded app is a likely cause. Safe-mode entry steps vary by manufacturer, so consult the maker’s support instructions if the generic steps in Google’s Android guide do not fit your model.

- Start the phone in Safe mode using the instructions for your model.
- Use the phone long enough to check whether the slowdown is still present.
- Restart normally, then remove recently downloaded apps one at a time.
- After each removal, restart and check whether performance improves. This can help identify which app is involved.
5. Treat a factory reset as a last resort
Google lists a factory reset as advanced troubleshooting. It removes data from the phone and uninstalls apps along with their associated data. Before resetting, back up the phone and separately verify any important information inside individual apps.
What a backup may restore
Google backup can include apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings and SMS/MMS. However, not every app backs up or restores all of its data. Photos and videos are backed up through Google Photos when you use that service. Google describes backup and restore in its Android backup guide.

Restoration generally happens during phone setup after the reset. A backup made on a higher Android version cannot be restored to a phone running a lower Android version. Check backup status and any app-specific backup options before proceeding. If you reinstall the app that caused the slowdown, the problem may return.

If restarting, updating, checking storage and testing downloaded apps do not solve the problem, contact your phone’s manufacturer or carrier for model-specific support. A generic cleaner app is not an established fix in Google’s troubleshooting guidance.

Pixel Repair Mode is a Pixel-specific option
Google says eligible Pixel phones running Android 14 with the December 2023 update or higher, and with at least 2 GB of free storage, can use Repair Mode. It starts a clean Android OS in a secure, dedicated partition for technicians, which can allow service without a factory reset. This feature is specific to eligible Pixel phones; see Google’s Repair Mode instructions for details.
