Choose Microsoft Teams if your organization already relies on Microsoft 365 and wants collaboration closely connected to its apps and files; choose Slack if your team needs a separate workspace built around ongoing discussions and third-party tools. That is a starting point, not a universal verdict: compare the exact plans, meeting requirements, outside collaborators, and administration controls your team needs.
What’s the practical difference between Slack and Teams?
Both platforms provide workplace chat and meetings. The decision is less about whether either can handle basic communication and more about how each fits the rest of your work. Slack describes its product as a cross-app, asynchronous workspace and positions Teams around Microsoft 365 integration and live interactions. That is Slack’s own characterization, not an independent product comparison; test it against your team’s actual workflows. Slack’s comparison article was published March 23, 2026.
- Start with your existing software: If employees already use Microsoft 365, Teams may be included in a subscription you pay for. If your team works across many non-Microsoft services, list the integrations and workflows that must work before choosing.
- Map your work rhythm: Consider whether your team mostly coordinates through persistent project conversations or scheduled meetings and shared Microsoft 365 files.
- Check external collaboration: Specify how you work with clients, vendors, and partner organizations, then confirm the relevant guest or external-sharing controls in each plan.
How do the plans and prices compare?
Prices below are displayed US prices from the vendors’ business plan pages accessed October 7, 2026. They are annual-billing examples, not global quotes; regional pricing, taxes, eligibility, and current availability may differ. Check the live pages before purchasing.

| Option | Displayed price and billing | Included features relevant to a comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Teams Essentials | $4.00 per user/month, paid yearly (US page) | Chat, calls, video conferencing, file sharing, tasks and polling; meeting recordings, transcripts and English live captions; 10 GB cloud storage per user; encryption for meetings, chats, calls and files. Microsoft plan details. |
| Microsoft 365 Business Basic | $7.00 per user/month, paid yearly (US page) | Teams, web and mobile Office apps, custom business email, 1 TB cloud storage per user, additional business apps and AI chat features. Microsoft plan details. |
| Slack Free | Price not stated on the cited plan summary; check the live page | 90 days of message history and one-to-one huddles. Slack plan details. |
| Slack Pro, Business+ and Enterprise+ | Prices depend on plan and billing; check the live page | Slack lists unlimited message history and group meetings for paid plans; AI capabilities vary by plan. Slack plan details. |
Do not compare a paid Slack tier with Teams as though both create a new cost if your organization already pays for Microsoft 365. Instead, calculate the number of users times the required tier and billing term, add any required extras, and account for existing licenses. Compare the features your team actually needs: history, meetings, AI, and administration can change which tier is appropriate. Slack’s pricing page is dynamic and has displayed a limited-time discount; confirm the current price and eligibility rather than treating a promotion as a standard rate.

Which platform fits your team’s work?
Choose Teams when Microsoft 365 is already central
Teams is a natural candidate when your organization depends on Microsoft 365 and wants chat and meetings alongside its Microsoft apps and files. Business Basic’s listed bundle includes Teams, web and mobile Office apps, custom business email, and 1 TB of storage per user. If you need a standalone Teams option instead, Essentials is listed separately. Confirm that the specific subscription and configuration meet your organization’s needs rather than assuming every Microsoft 365 license includes the same capabilities.
Choose Slack when cross-app conversations are the priority
Slack may fit a team that wants a dedicated collaboration workspace spanning multiple third-party tools, especially if conversations continue asynchronously across projects. Slack promotes its app directory and plan-dependent AI features, but the existence of an app or feature does not establish that it supports your specific workflow or is included in the plan you need. Verify the integrations, automation, and AI capabilities against your required apps and plan.

Choose by meeting and outside-collaboration requirements
Both products support meetings, but the needs that matter are specific: group calls, recording, transcripts, captions, and how external organizations or guests are handled. Microsoft lists recordings and transcripts for Teams Essentials. Verify the exact plan, limits, and policies for both products before relying on a feature, particularly for external sharing and compliance-sensitive work.

- Information retrieval: Decide how much message history must remain available and searchable. Slack Free’s listed history limit is 90 days; its paid plans list unlimited history. Check the applicable retention and search rules for the precise Teams plan and both products’ administration settings.
- Integrations and automation: Name the apps and processes that are essential, and verify their supported features, permissions, and plan requirements. Do not assume an integration listing guarantees a complete workflow.
- AI: Identify the task you want AI to perform and check availability, licensing, and controls for that feature. Avoid choosing on a broad claim that one platform has “better AI.”
- Security and administration: Compare identity, retention, compliance, data controls, and external-sharing settings against your organization’s requirements. A feature’s presence alone is not a security endorsement; configuration and licensing matter.
- Migration impact: Before switching, decide what conversation history, files, integrations, and external-collaboration arrangements must carry over, then confirm what the chosen plans and migration process support.
A simple decision rule
- Check existing licenses. Identify what your organization already pays for and whether Teams is included in the relevant Microsoft 365 subscription.
- Set the must-haves. Record requirements for message history, meetings, outside collaborators, apps, AI, and administration.
- Compare equivalent plans. Use live regional pricing and the same billing term, and include required add-ons rather than comparing headline prices alone.
- Validate real workflows. Test the integrations, meeting scenarios, and external-collaboration arrangements your team uses before committing or switching.
Microsoft describes Teams as a place to “meet, chat, call, and collaborate.” Its business plan page also spells out how Teams Essentials and Microsoft 365 Business Basic differ. Neither vendor’s positioning establishes that its product is objectively easier, faster, more secure, or more productive for every team; the right choice follows from your licenses and verified requirements.
