SkyFactory 4 is a CurseForge modpack whose listed 4.2.4 server files target Minecraft 1.12.2. Run that Forge generation with a 64-bit Java 8 runtime. The pack authors do not publish a guaranteed numeric RAM or CPU minimum. For planning, a FreaksMC guide dated October 7, 2026 estimates about 6 GB of host RAM for a small group and 8–10 GB as factory automation expands; treat those figures as operational estimates, not official requirements. The practical setup is to download the server files, run the supplied install script, accept the EULA, launch Forge, and keep every client on the same pack release.
What SkyFactory 4 requires
SkyFactory 4 is a downloadable CurseForge modpack built on Minecraft 1.12.2 and the corresponding Forge generation. The currently listed 4.2.4 server files are therefore a legacy Java server workload rather than a current Minecraft release. Java compatibility matters more than chasing a modern Java version: use Java 8, preferably a 64-bit runtime, and make sure the install and start scripts call that executable.
There is no official numeric minimum for memory, processor model, processor core count, or supported player count. The authors’ project pages establish the pack, server files, Minecraft version, and multiplayer configuration, but they do not promise that a particular specification will handle a given number of players or machines. Your real requirement changes with loaded chunks, entities, automation networks, world-generation activity, and how many people are online at once.
DarkPacks maintainer Darkosto describes the pack as having “30+ world types” in the SkyFactory-4 Multiplayer Instructions page, edited August 22, 2019. That variety makes world-generator selection a server configuration decision rather than a cosmetic option.

How much RAM does a SkyFactory 4 server need?
Separate the RAM installed in the computer from the heap assigned to Java. The operating system, Java’s non-heap overhead, file caching, backups, monitoring tools, and a Minecraft client running on the same machine all need memory outside -Xmx. Giving Java every available gigabyte can make the host swap or terminate processes even when the Java heap itself appears large enough.

Those figures refer to the machine’s usable memory, not automatically to the Java heap. Start with a conservative heap that leaves visible headroom for the host. For example, on a machine with only the server workload, you might begin below the total installed memory and increase gradually; on a computer that also runs a client, reserve enough RAM for the client before choosing -Xmx. The correct value is the largest heap that leaves the operating system responsive during peak activity, not the largest value the startup script will accept.

Choosing and changing the heap
- Open the supplied start script or the JVM argument field used by your hosting panel.
- Find the maximum-heap option, written as
-Xmx. A suffix such asGexpresses gigabytes. - Set a starting value below the host’s total RAM, leaving room for the operating system, Java overhead, and any local client.
- Restart the server after changing the value; heap changes do not apply to an already running Java process.
- Watch tick time, garbage-collection pauses, operating-system memory pressure, and the server log while players load chunks and use machines. Increase memory only when those observations show the server is constrained and the host still has headroom.
A larger heap cannot repair a CPU bottleneck, a broken mod, an overloaded chunk area, or an unsuitable world generator. Conversely, a small heap can cause frequent garbage collection even when the processor is fast, so diagnose both memory and tick performance.
What CPU does SkyFactory 4 need?
No reviewed source identifies a required CPU model, clock speed, benchmark score, or core count. Use a modern processor with strong single-thread performance and spare capacity for the operating system and background tasks. Minecraft 1.12.2 server ticks are sensitive to the speed of the main simulation thread, while additional threads still help with operating-system work, networking, storage, Java housekeeping, and other services.
CPU demand rises when several players explore different areas, when many chunks remain active, and when machines, item pipes, fluids, mobs, or other entities perform work every tick. A quiet starting island can run comfortably on hardware that later struggles after a factory occupies many chunks. Treat any processor recommendation as a capacity decision for your particular world, not as an official SkyFactory specification.

- Prefer strong per-core performance over a large number of slow cores.
- Leave spare CPU capacity so world saves, backups, and background services do not compete with the server tick loop.
- Use fast, reliable storage for the world directory and backups; storage latency can make saves and chunk loading feel like CPU or network problems.
- Measure the running server under the same exploration and automation pattern your group actually uses.
Java and Forge compatibility
Use a 64-bit Java 8 runtime for the 1.12.2 Forge generation. Newer Java releases may launch some legacy software but are not the compatibility target described by the current setup guidance, so changing Java versions should not be your first troubleshooting step. Confirm which executable the scripts call instead of assuming that the java command in your system path is the one you installed.

- Install a 64-bit Java 8 runtime appropriate for your operating system.
- Open a terminal or command prompt in the Java installation’s binary directory, or use the full path in the server script.
- Run
java -versionand confirm that the reported major version is 8 and that the process is 64-bit where the runtime reports architecture. - Update the script’s Java path if it resolves to another installation.
Keeping the intended Java path explicit prevents a common failure in which the installer works on one machine but the start script silently invokes a different runtime.
Server setup from download to first login
Use a dedicated directory for the server so world files, logs, configuration, scripts, and backups are not mixed with a client installation. The following sequence applies whether the machine is at home or supplied by a managed host.
- Download the server package. Open the SkyFactory 4 project’s files area on CurseForge and obtain the server files for the release you intend to run. If you choose 4.2.4, the server is for Minecraft 1.12.2.
- Prepare Java. Install a 64-bit Java 8 runtime and verify that the supplied scripts will use it.
- Extract to a dedicated directory. Keep the archive’s directory structure intact. Do not place server files inside an unrelated client instance.
- Run the install script. Execute the installation script included with the server package. It creates or downloads the Forge libraries required by the server. Allow the process to finish before attempting a normal launch.
- Start once and read the EULA notice. The first launch normally stops while the EULA file is created. Open that file and read Mojang’s terms.
- Accept the terms deliberately. Set
eula=trueonly after accepting the EULA. If you do not agree, leave the value unchanged and do not run the server. - Launch Forge again. Run the supplied start script after the EULA value is set. Wait for Forge and the mods to finish loading before connecting.
- Set memory in the start command. Adjust the script’s
-Xmxvalue using the host-headroom method above. Do not assign all physical RAM to Java. - Align the client. Install the same SkyFactory 4 release on every player’s client. A client on another pack version, Minecraft version, or mod set can fail to connect even when the server itself is healthy.
World generation and multiplayer configuration
Choosing a world type
SkyFactory 4 supports more than 30 world types according to the maintainer instructions. World generation is configured in server.properties, using the matching generator-settings and level-type values documented by the maintainer wiki. Copy a complete pair from that documentation rather than mixing values from different world types; an incorrect combination can create the wrong terrain or prevent the world from loading as intended.
Set the values before creating the final world. Changing generator settings after a world already exists generally affects newly generated areas, not terrain that has already been saved, so decide whether you want a fresh world before making the change. Stop the server before editing configuration files and keep a backup of the world directory.

Islands, teams, and prestige
For island-based multiplayer, use the documented /topography island commands in game. The maintainer instructions also document Together Forever invite commands for forming teams. Follow those command forms exactly as written for your pack release and permission level; a player who lacks the required permission will not be able to create or join an island simply because the server is running.
Prestige is controlled through prestige.cfg. Enable it only if your group wants the progression system. The maintainer documentation warns that updates may require repeating this change, so check the file again after an update instead of assuming the setting persisted.
Networking and access for friends
A self-hosted server must be reachable from the internet or from the same private network where your friends play. The exact steps depend on your router, firewall, operating system, and whether your internet provider allows inbound connections. Permit the Java server process through the host firewall, configure your router’s forwarding rule when necessary, and give friends the address and port your network actually exposes. Do not publish administrative credentials or grant operator permissions casually.
Test connectivity with one trusted friend before scheduling a larger session. If local players can connect but outside players cannot, investigate the firewall, router forwarding, carrier-grade NAT, or changing public address rather than increasing RAM. A hosting provider can remove much of this network work, but it cannot make an incompatible client version connect.

Hosting is optional. The right choice depends on whether you value control and a one-time hardware investment or convenience and an adjustable monthly service. No provider has been verified as an official SkyFactory partner, so evaluate any service on its technical support and policies rather than on an implied endorsement.

Choose self-hosting when you already have a reliable always-on machine and want unrestricted file access. Choose managed hosting when port forwarding, uptime, hardware maintenance, or incremental RAM upgrades are more important than minimizing recurring cost.

Do not judge capacity from the first minute after startup. Forge and the modpack perform substantial loading work before the world is ready, and a quiet spawn area does not represent a developed factory. Observe the server during exploration, island creation, machine processing, and simultaneous player activity.
- Memory pressure: Check total host usage, swap activity, and garbage-collection pauses. A full host can lag even when the heap limit looks adequate.
- Tick health: Watch whether the server consistently falls behind during automation or chunk loading. If tick time worsens while memory remains comfortable, investigate CPU capacity, active chunks, entities, and inefficient builds.
- Chunk activity: Ask players to avoid loading large unexplored regions simultaneously while you establish a baseline.
- Logs: Look for repeated Java errors, missing libraries, mod exceptions, or world-save failures. Repeating exceptions are a configuration problem, not a reason to keep increasing
-Xmx. - Storage: Ensure the world directory has free space and that scheduled backups do not run during the busiest play period.
Common setup failures and fixes
The installer or launcher reports the wrong Java version
Check the exact executable used by the script, not just the Java version installed globally. Replace an ambiguous java path with the full path to the 64-bit Java 8 executable, then rerun the installation or start command.
The server stops with an EULA message
Open the generated EULA file, read Mojang’s terms, and set eula=true only if you accept them. Save the file in the server directory and launch again. Editing a different copy of the file has no effect.
Players receive a mod or version mismatch
Confirm that the server and every client use the same SkyFactory 4 release, Minecraft 1.12.2 base, and Forge-compatible mod set. Do not copy a partially updated client directory over an existing installation without checking its version.

The host runs out of memory
Compare total host usage with the heap limit. Lower the heap if it leaves no room for the operating system or a local client, close unrelated applications, and increase physical RAM or move the server to a larger machine if the workload genuinely needs more memory. A larger -Xmx value alone is not a fix when the host is already swapping.
The world lags after the factory expands
Record when lag occurs and what changed: new machines, chunk loaders, entities, exploration, or concurrent players. Check CPU saturation and tick behavior before changing memory. Reduce unnecessary active areas, spread heavy automation thoughtfully, and remove malfunctioning builds identified in the logs.
Friends cannot connect from outside the home
Verify the server is listening, allow Java through the host firewall, and recheck the router forwarding rule and public address. If your provider uses carrier-grade NAT or blocks inbound traffic, self-hosting may require a different network arrangement or a managed host.
Safe updates and backups
Before changing the pack release, Java path, world generator, or configuration, stop the server cleanly and make a complete copy of the world directory, configuration files, scripts, and any custom mods. Keep at least one backup away from the server computer and test that it can be opened. After an update, verify the Java 8 path, inspect prestige.cfg, and confirm that server and client versions still match. Because the maintainer warns that updates may require re-enabling prestige, treat that setting as part of your post-update checklist.
Do not alter generator settings on a valuable world without a backup. If you want to experiment with another one of the pack’s 30-plus world types, create a separate test world and validate island, team, and progression commands before inviting the whole group.

A practical sizing decision
For a small friend group, begin with hardware that can provide the dated guide’s approximately 6 GB total-memory estimate while leaving operating-system headroom. Plan for 8–10 GB or more when the factory becomes automation-heavy, but increase capacity in response to observed memory pressure and tick behavior rather than treating the range as a guarantee. In every case, use Java 8, strong single-thread CPU performance, aligned client and server releases, and a tested backup and recovery routine.
