Running a modpack with friends? Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks (CurseForge, FTB, Technic) and free DDoS protection.
If a SkyFactory 4 server window opens and disappears, do not reinstall at random. The usual causes are an incomplete server-pack installation, Java other than 8 being used by the startup script, an unanswered EULA, or launching the vanilla Minecraft jar instead of the Forge server. Start the server from Command Prompt so the error remains visible, verify the Java executable, accept the EULA, and confirm that the Forge process—not minecraft_server.1.12.2.jar—is creating the world.
SkyFactory 4 is a Minecraft 1.12.2 modpack. CurseForge lists release 4.2.4 and server files separately from the client installation; its project page records an update on December 13, 2021 (CurseForge, 2021). The procedure below applies to a self-hosted Windows or Linux server and also gives you the checks to send to a managed host.

Start with the symptom that matches your server
| What you see | Most useful first check |
|---|---|
ServerStart.bat flashes and closes |
Run the batch file from an already-open Command Prompt and read the console output. Then inspect logs/latest.log and any generated debug.log. |
| The script stops before a server appears | Confirm that the server-pack installation completed, the generated Forge files are present, Java 8 is being called, and eula.txt contains eula=true. |
| A console stays open, but nobody can join | Check that the Forge process remains alive, the client and server use the same SkyFactory release, the port is correct, and the firewall allows Java. |
| The world is a plain or empty void and starter content is missing | Inspect server.properties and verify that the Forge server, not the vanilla jar, generated the world. Back up before deleting and regenerating it. |
A server process that starts is not automatically a server that is reachable or correctly modded. Treat startup, world generation, and network access as three separate tests.
Use the correct SkyFactory 4 server files
Confirm the pack and Minecraft versions
Use the SkyFactory 4 server download from the project’s CurseForge Files area, not a client instance copied from a player’s computer. The listed pack release is 4.2.4 for Minecraft 1.12.2. Keep the server in its own directory so that scripts, mods, configuration files, libraries, and generated worlds cannot be confused with a client profile.

- Download the server files as a complete pack.
- Extract them into a dedicated directory such as
C:SkyFactory4Server. - Do not merge that directory with an existing vanilla server or a client installation.
- Do not download individual mods to assemble a substitute pack; the server scripts and configuration are part of the installation.
Forge’s official download site is files.minecraftforge.net. Use it only when you need to verify a Forge build or source; the SkyFactory server pack should supply the Forge server files it expects. Minecraft Forge forum support identifies that site as the official Forge source and CurseForge as a trusted mod source (Minecraft Forge Forums, 2021).
Check that the extraction is complete
At the top level of the server directory you should see the supplied installation and startup scripts, a mods directory, configuration files, and Forge-related files after installation. If the archive was extracted into an extra nested folder, either move the contents up or change into the folder that actually contains install.bat and ServerStart.bat. Running a script from the wrong directory can make it appear to do nothing because relative paths no longer resolve.
Finish installation and accept the EULA
Windows procedure
- Open the server directory and run the supplied
install.bat. Let it finish downloading or generating the Forge components before closing the window. - Start the generated Forge server once. This first run normally creates files including
eula.txt; it may stop because the EULA has not yet been accepted. - Open
eula.txtin a text editor and change the setting to exactlyeula=true. Do not add spaces or change the key name. - Run the supplied
ServerStart.batagain. Keep the console open long enough to see whether Forge reaches a ready state.
Linux procedure
- From a terminal, change to the directory containing
install.sh, then run./install.sh. If the shell reports a permission problem, grant execute permission to the supplied scripts and run them again. - Launch the generated Forge server once so that
eula.txtis created. - Edit the file and set
eula=true, then rerun the supplied server-start script.
A DarkPacks setup report describes this install, first Forge launch, EULA change, and restart sequence as the expected path. In the same report, ServerStart.bat closing immediately was associated with incomplete setup or a script that could not invoke the intended runtime (DarkPacks, 2019).
Make the startup error visible
Run the batch file from Command Prompt
A double-clicked batch file closes its window when the command ends, hiding the only useful error message. Open Command Prompt, change to the server directory, and run the script there:
cd /d C:SkyFactory4Server
ServerStart.bat
If your path contains spaces, use the equivalent quoted path in Command Prompt. Leave the window open and copy the complete output, including the first error and the lines immediately before the process exits. Forge support moderator DaemonUmbra specifically recommends running the jar manually and providing its output when a server window disappears (Minecraft Forge Forums, 2021).
Run the Forge jar directly when the script is the suspect
If the script itself fails before it starts Java, inspect it in a text editor. It should reference the Forge server generated by the pack and the intended memory or JVM options, rather than minecraft_server.1.12.2.jar. You can also run the Forge jar from the same command prompt to separate a script problem from a Forge problem; use the jar name and arguments already supplied by your pack rather than inventing a different server command.

Collect the right logs
- The live console output from the failed start.
logs/latest.log, which records the most recent run.debug.logwhen the installation generates it.- The exact contents of the startup script, especially its Java command and jar name.
Record whether the process exits immediately, stops after creating eula.txt, reaches a running console and then dies, or remains running but cannot accept connections. Those are different failure branches. Reinstalling without preserving these files usually removes the evidence needed to identify the branch.
Verify that Java 8 is the executable the server actually uses
Check Java in the same context as the server
SkyFactory 4 targets the Minecraft 1.12.2 generation, and server reports consistently document Java 8 environments. Examples include Java 8u201, OpenJDK 8u362, and OpenJDK 8u392; later reports also continue to use Java 8 (DarkPacks issue reports, 2019–2024). A Java version installed on the computer is not enough if the batch file resolves a different executable through PATH.
In the same Command Prompt from which you will start the server, run:
java -version
where java
The first command reports the runtime version; the second shows which executable Windows will select. On PowerShell, (Get-Command java).Source shows the selected path. On Linux, use java -version and which java.
Pin the startup script to 64-bit Java 8
If several Java versions are installed, edit the server’s startup script so its command names the full path to the 64-bit Java 8 executable instead of the ambiguous word java. Use the path returned by your Java installation and keep the rest of the pack’s arguments unchanged. This prevents a newer runtime or a 32-bit runtime from being selected after a system update.
Do not assume that changing the system PATH changed the script’s behavior: a script may contain its own Java path, use a bundled runtime, or be launched by a hosting panel with a separate environment. Check the actual command line in the script and compare it with java -version from that launch context.

Interpret a Java mismatch carefully
If the console reports a runtime or class-loading failure before Forge begins loading mods, first correct the Java executable and rerun the server. Keep Java 8 dedicated to this 1.12.2 instance rather than removing every other Java version from the machine. Other applications may require a newer runtime, while this pack needs the older compatibility baseline documented by its server cases.
Make sure Forge, not vanilla Minecraft, is starting
Why the wrong jar can look like a successful start
Running minecraft_server.1.12.2.jar can produce a functioning vanilla server even when the SkyFactory files and mods are sitting beside it. That apparent success is misleading: the vanilla process does not load the pack’s mods, configuration, or world-generation hooks. Players may see missing mod advancements, an incorrect world, or a server that cannot serve the expected SkyFactory content.
Identify the intended process
The correct process is the Forge server generated by the SkyFactory server pack and referenced by ServerStart.bat or the supplied Linux startup script. In the console, look for Forge and mod-loading activity rather than treating a generic “Done” message from a vanilla jar as proof that the pack is installed. The startup script, jar name, mods directory, and configuration directory must all belong to the same server installation.
A 2024 DarkPacks report describes a host installation using a vanilla server that resulted in missing mod advancements and incorrect world generation. The maintainer’s remedy was to upload the Forge jar together with all mods, configs, and scripts (DarkPacks, 2024). If a host asks for an upload, send the complete server pack structure, not only a jar.
If the server starts but nobody can connect
Prove that the Forge process is still alive
Watch the console after startup and check the process list or hosting-panel status. A process that exits after printing a startup message can leave a stale status page or a closed listening socket. Restart it from the visible console and save the output if it stops.

Match the client and server release
Install the same SkyFactory release on every client and on the server. For the release documented here, that means SkyFactory 4 version 4.2.4 and its Minecraft 1.12.2 base. A client on another pack revision can fail before joining even when the network is healthy because its mods, registries, or configurations differ.

Check the port and bind settings
The standard Minecraft server port is 25565. In server.properties, confirm the server is using the port you intend to expose and that no other process already occupies it. If you changed the port, players must enter the changed port with the address. A host may also require a separate port allocation or forwarding rule.
Allow Java through the firewall
On the server machine, allow the Java executable used by the Forge process through the operating-system firewall for the required private or public network profile. If the server is behind a router, forward the selected TCP port to the machine running Forge. Corporate, school, and carrier-grade networks can block inbound connections even when the local firewall is configured correctly.
Separate timeout from refusal
- A connection-refused error commonly means no process is listening on the address and port, the Forge process stopped, or a firewall actively rejected the connection.
- A timeout commonly indicates an unreachable address, missing port forwarding, a firewall silently dropping traffic, or a host-networking problem.
- A local connection that works while an outside connection fails points toward router, hosting-panel, or firewall configuration rather than mod loading.
DarkPacks reports include a server that appeared to run but became unreachable after a restart and another with repeated 30-second LAN timeouts despite Java 8 on both sides (DarkPacks, 2021–2024). These cases illustrate why Java compatibility alone does not establish network reachability.

Fix a vanilla void world or missing starter content
Check the generator configuration before deleting anything
Stop the server and back up the entire world directory. Open server.properties and inspect the Sky Factory generator setting and related level options. Confirm that the Forge startup path is the one that created the world. A vanilla jar can create a void or otherwise incorrect world while leaving the pack’s files untouched, so simply restarting the same jar will reproduce the problem.
Regenerate only after a backup
- Copy the existing world directory to a separate backup location.
- Correct the generator setting and startup script.
- Remove or rename the incorrectly generated world directory so the corrected server can create a fresh one.
- Start the Forge server and verify that SkyFactory starter content, advancements, and expected world behavior appear before inviting players.
A 2025 DarkPacks issue reports a vanilla void world, missing starter items, and missing advancements after a host used the wrong server or configuration path (DarkPacks, 2025). Deleting a world without a backup permanently discards player builds, so regeneration is the final step, not the first.
A clean recovery sequence when the cause is unclear
Use this order to avoid changing several variables at once:
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
- Stop every Minecraft or Java process associated with the instance.
- Copy the world,
server.properties,eula.txt, startup scripts, and logs to a backup directory. - Obtain a fresh SkyFactory 4 server pack for the documented 4.2.4 release and extract it into a new, dedicated folder.
- Run the supplied installer and allow it to finish.
- Confirm Java 8 and the executable path from the same shell used to launch the server.
- Start the generated Forge server once, set
eula=true, and stop it cleanly. - Compare the new startup script with the backed-up script, preserving only intentional settings such as memory limits and the correct Java path.
- Start from Command Prompt or a terminal, capture the output, and confirm Forge is loading the pack.
- Restore configuration and the world only after the clean server starts. Restore one category at a time so a bad setting or world can be identified.
- Test locally, then test from another machine before changing router or hosting settings.
This sequence preserves evidence and separates installation, runtime, Forge loading, world generation, and networking. It is safer than repeatedly overwriting the same directory and guessing which change helped.

If you move the instance to a managed host, verify compatibility before uploading anything. The host must accept custom Forge modpacks for Minecraft 1.12.2, let you select or provide Java 8, expose the intended port, and allow access to server.properties, logs, firewall or network controls, and the complete mods/configs/scripts set. Ask how the panel starts the Forge jar; a one-click vanilla template is not a substitute.
- Local hosting: gives you direct control over Java, scripts, files, firewall rules, backups, and port forwarding, but you must maintain the operating system and network.
- Managed hosting: can simplify uptime and networking, but only if the provider supports this older Forge and Java combination and permits the full server-pack layout.
Before migrating, export the world and configuration, record the exact pack release, and obtain confirmation that the provider can run Forge 1.12.2 with Java 8. Do not judge compatibility from a host’s generic Minecraft support label.
What to send for effective support
When asking a maintainer or host for help, include the exact SkyFactory release, Minecraft version, operating system, Java version and executable path, the startup command, and whether you ran the Forge or vanilla jar. Attach the console output, logs/latest.log, any debug.log, the relevant server.properties settings, and a description of whether the failure is an immediate exit, a crash after loading, a timeout, a refusal, or incorrect world generation. Remove passwords, private IP details, and other credentials before sharing.
This information is more actionable than saying only that the server “doesn’t start.” It lets the helper distinguish an incomplete EULA, wrong Java runtime, wrong jar, mod/configuration failure, and network path problem without asking you to repeat the installation.
