Skyborne are a neutral playable race in World of Warcraft: Forever. You can join either faction: Horde Skyborne, called Windshapers, can choose Shaman in addition to Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, and Druid; Alliance Skyborne, called High-Order Skyborne, can choose Mage instead. A Skyborne Heroic Pack or a higher special edition is required to create one. Their shared racials emphasize movement, Haste, and bonus damage against Elementals, while each faction has a different utility active.
Skyborne class choices at a glance
Skyborne are neutral in the practical character-creation sense: the race is available to both factions, but your faction determines the fifth class and the faction-specific racial active. Blizzard’s class tables support this five-class-per-faction arrangement.
| Faction and Skyborne identity | Classes available | Exclusive class | Faction active |
|---|---|---|---|
| Horde — Windshapers | Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, Druid, Shaman | Shaman | Skysight |
| Alliance — High-Order Skyborne | Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, Druid, Mage | Mage | Read Ley Line |
The four shared choices are the right starting point if you want the same class regardless of faction. The faction-exclusive choice is the deciding factor when you want a Shaman’s elemental utility or a Mage’s ranged arcane toolkit.
What the Skyborne are
Warcraft Forever describes the Skyborne as Highborne exiles who made a pact with the wind spirits of Skywall. Their story begins on Zephras Isle, where that alliance shapes both their appearance and their abilities.

The expanded account traces the race to the Shen’drallar rebellion against Prince Tortheldrin and the flight from Eldre’Thalas. After their exile, the community divided along ideological lines. The High Order concentrated on arcane tradition and became the Alliance-aligned High-Order Skyborne; the Windshapers embraced elemental power and became the Horde-aligned branch.
That split explains why the two factions share a racial foundation but receive different final class and utility options. Choosing a faction is therefore both a gameplay decision and a choice between two parts of the Skyborne story.
Shared Skyborne classes
Warrior
Warrior is the straightforward martial option for either faction. It suits players who want a weapon-focused character and a class associated with direct combat and protection. Because Warrior is shared, you can select the Windshaper or High-Order identity without giving up the class itself.
Hunter
Hunter provides a ranged damage path for both factions. Choose it when you prefer attacking from distance and want your class decision to remain independent of the Horde-versus-Alliance-exclusive choice.
Rogue
Rogue is the shared choice for players drawn to a stealth-oriented, close-range damage style. It keeps the same class availability on either side, so faction selection can be based on story preference and the corresponding racial active.

Druid
Druid is the shared hybrid option. If you value flexibility across different forms of play rather than committing to one narrow role, Druid lets you keep that flexibility with either Skyborne faction.
Faction-exclusive classes
Horde Windshaper: Shaman
Shaman is available only to Horde Skyborne. It is the natural match for the Windshaper concept: elemental magic, totems, and broad utility. Select Windshaper Shaman if the class itself matters more to you than the Alliance alternative, or if you want your character’s elemental identity reinforced by both lore and racial abilities.
Shaman also makes the Horde choice distinct for players who want more than one elemental-themed feature. The racial Elemental Insight bonus applies to all Skyborne, while Shaman supplies the class-based elemental toolkit.
Alliance High-Order Skyborne: Mage
Mage is exclusive to Alliance Skyborne. It offers ranged arcane damage and Mage utility, fitting the High Order’s arcane-focused history. Choose this combination when you want the High-Order story and a ranged spellcaster in the same character.
The Mage choice is not simply a cosmetic counterpart to Shaman. It changes your class role, damage profile, and utility options, so a player deciding between the two factions should first decide whether arcane ranged play or elemental Shaman play is the priority.

Skyborne racial abilities
Every Skyborne receives three shared racial abilities. The faction adds one active ability, producing a different utility profile for Windshapers and High-Order Skyborne.

|---|---|---|---|
| Walk on Air | Active | Controlled downward glide for 10 seconds. | Helps with controlled descents and movement through vertical terrain. |
| Wind Blessed | Passive | Spellcasting, melee, and ranged Haste increased by 1%. | A small, always-on speed benefit that applies across different combat styles. |
| Elemental Insight | Passive | Damage against Elementals increased by 5%. | Most valuable when fighting Elemental enemies; it is encounter-dependent rather than universal. |
| Skysight | Horde active | Attempts to draw power from an elemental convergence. Wowhead records 10% movement and mounted-movement speed for 30 seconds when no convergence is found, or 15 minutes when one is found. | Movement-focused utility, with duration depending on the nearby convergence. |
| Read Ley Line | Alliance active | Attempts to tap a nearby ley line. Wowhead records 100% health and mana regeneration for 15 seconds without a ley line, or 15 minutes when one is found. | Regeneration utility, with duration depending on the nearby ley line. |
Walk on Air
Walk on Air is a controlled downward glide, not unrestricted flight. It lasts 10 seconds, giving you a way to manage a descent rather than simply dropping from a height. Its value is primarily movement and positioning; it does not replace ordinary travel systems.
Wind Blessed
Wind Blessed increases Haste for spellcasting, melee attacks, and ranged attacks by 1%. Because all three combat categories are named, the passive is useful across the shared classes and both exclusive classes instead of favoring only casters or only weapon users.
Elemental Insight
Elemental Insight increases damage against Elementals by 5%. This is a strong thematic bonus but a conditional one. It matters when the target is an Elemental and contributes nothing to damage against other enemy types, so it should not be treated as a permanent five-percent increase in every encounter.
Horde Skysight
Skysight is the Windshaper active and is centered on movement. Wowhead’s racial listing says it attempts to draw power from an elemental convergence and records 10% movement speed plus 10% mounted-movement speed. If no convergence is found, the effect lasts 30 seconds; if one is found, the duration is 15 minutes.

Alliance Read Ley Line
Read Ley Line is the High-Order active and is centered on recovery. Wowhead’s listing says it attempts to tap a nearby ley line and grants 100% health and mana regeneration. The recorded duration is 15 seconds when no ley line is found and 15 minutes when one is found.
There is a beta-era numerical discrepancy in published summaries. Icy Veins presents the faction actives with shorter values in its table: 10% regeneration for Read Ley Line and 10% movement speed for Skysight. Wowhead lists the longer, location-dependent durations and the specific 100% health-and-mana regeneration wording for Read Ley Line. Treat these figures as tuning that may change and check the live in-game tooltip at launch rather than assuming either summary is final.
How to choose between Horde and Alliance
Start with the exclusive class
If you already know you want Shaman, choose Horde Windshaper. If you want Mage, choose Alliance High-Order. This is the only class restriction in the Skyborne matrix, so it is the clearest decision point.
Compare the utility active
Choose Skysight when movement and mounted-movement speed are more useful to your play pattern. Choose Read Ley Line when health and mana recovery is the more attractive utility. The effects are not interchangeable: one is movement-oriented and the other is regeneration-oriented.

For Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, or Druid, faction does not remove the class. In that case, decide based on the story identity, the active racial effect, and which faction community or friends you intend to play with.

Match the racial bonuses to your content
Wind Blessed is broad but modest, applying its 1% Haste to spellcasting, melee, and ranged attacks. Elemental Insight is narrower and depends on the enemy type. If your regular content rarely features Elementals, do not select Skyborne solely for the five-percent conditional damage bonus.

Blizzard frames race and class as a combined choice that determines the fantasy and role of your hero. The Skyborne options cover direct martial combat, ranged damage, stealth-oriented damage, a flexible hybrid, elemental utility, and arcane ranged play.
- Want the broadest class identity? Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, and Druid are available to both factions.
- Want elemental flavor and Shaman utility? The Horde Windshaper combination is the dedicated option.
- Want ranged arcane damage and Mage utility? Choose the Alliance High-Order combination.
- Want a hybrid rather than a single-purpose class? Druid is the shared choice designed around flexibility.
The racial bonuses should refine this choice rather than override it. A 1% Haste passive and a conditional Elemental-damage bonus are useful, but the class’s preferred role and your faction-exclusive option have a larger effect on how the character plays.
Unlock requirements and pack availability
Skyborne character creation requires a paid World of Warcraft: Forever special edition. Wowhead reports that the race is unlocked by purchasing a Forever pack and lists the Skyborne Heroic Pack at $29.99/€29.99 in an update dated September 17, 2026. A Heroic Pack or any higher special edition is required; the standard edition does not provide Skyborne access according to that listing.
Prices and edition contents can change by region or after launch. Verify the current product page and the entitlement attached to your account before purchasing, particularly if you are upgrading from an edition you already own. The available evidence does not establish a universal regional price beyond the quoted dollar and euro amounts.
Before you create a Skyborne: a practical checklist
- Decide whether your preferred exclusive class is Shaman or Mage.
- If you are choosing Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, or Druid, compare Skysight with Read Ley Line instead of treating faction as a class restriction.
- Check whether your expected enemies include Elementals often enough for Elemental Insight to matter.
- Confirm that your account owns the Heroic Pack or a higher Forever special edition.
- Read the live racial tooltips at character creation because the abilities were documented during a beta period and their numbers may be retuned.
What may change before launch
The class split is presented in Blizzard’s official access and class materials, while the exact racial figures come from third-party beta listings. Blizzard can adjust durations, percentages, or how a convergence and ley line are detected. The most important items to recheck are the Skysight and Read Ley Line values, because published summaries already disagree.
The stable planning rule is therefore simple: treat the five-class-per-faction structure and the shared-versus-exclusive identity split as the current framework, but confirm numerical racial details in the final client before basing a competitive decision on them.

Bottom line
Skyborne give both factions Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, and Druid. Horde Windshapers add Shaman and movement-focused Skysight, while Alliance High-Order Skyborne add Mage and regeneration-focused Read Ley Line. Walk on Air, 1% Haste, and 5% damage against Elementals are shared. If you want to create one, budget for the Heroic Pack or a higher special edition and verify the final beta-tuned tooltips before launch.
