For most buyers, the Sony WH-CH720N is the safer all-round choice. It has documented active noise canceling (ANC), an ambient-sound mode, a low 192 g weight, Bluetooth 5.2 and a battery specification that separates ANC-on and ANC-off use. Those features matter most on planes, trains, in offices and anywhere background noise is a problem.
The Skullcandy Hesh Evo is the more appealing alternative if you want a simpler headset, Tile finding and Skullcandy’s claimed 36+ hours of play time. Skullcandy’s support documentation does not list ANC, so the fairest description is that the Hesh Evo should be treated as a non-ANC model unless the exact regional product listing says otherwise. The available manufacturer information does not establish a definitive winner for sound quality, comfort, microphone quality or ANC performance on the Hesh Evo itself.
The practical answer: choose based on your main use
These headphones target the same broad budget category, but they are not documented as offering the same feature set. Sony positions the WH-CH720N as a lightweight noise-canceling model with an ambient listening option. Skullcandy documents the Hesh Evo around wireless playback, long claimed battery life, rapid charging and Tile finding. That makes the choice less about a universal “better sound” verdict and more about whether you need noise control and Sony’s documented extras.
- Choose the Sony WH-CH720N for commuting, flights, shared offices, studying, or any situation in which reducing outside noise is a priority.
- Choose the Skullcandy Hesh Evo if you prefer a straightforward Bluetooth headset, want Tile’s finding feature, and value Skullcandy’s longer single-number play-time claim over ANC.
- Do not choose on sound, comfort or call quality alone based on the available evidence. There is no reliable, exact-model primary-source test that settles those areas for the Hesh Evo.
The independent comparison located for this product family tested the Sony WH-CH720N against Skullcandy’s different Hesh ANC model. It reported advantages for Sony in comfort, build, sound balance, multi-device pairing and battery, but those results cannot be transferred wholesale to the Hesh Evo.

Documented specifications at a glance
| Specification or feature | Sony WH-CH720N | Skullcandy Hesh Evo | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Noise control | Active noise canceling; Ambient Sound mode; Sony describes Dual Noise Sensor technology, two microphones in each earcup and an Integrated Processor V1 | ANC is not listed on Skullcandy’s Hesh Evo support page | Sony has documented noise-control modes. Calling the Hesh Evo “non-ANC” is an inference from the available documentation, not a laboratory measurement. |
| Battery claim | Maximum 35 hours of continuous music playback with ANC on; maximum 50 hours with ANC off | Up to 36+ hours of play time | The claims use different test descriptions, so the numbers are not a like-for-like laboratory comparison. |
| Charging | Approximately 3.5 hours for a full charge | 1 hour 45 minutes by USB-C; a 10-minute rapid charge provides 3+ hours of playtime | Skullcandy documents the faster full-charge time and a specific short-charge claim. |
| Weight | Approximately 6.8 oz / 192 g | Not stated on the cited Hesh Evo support page | Sony’s weight is documented; there is not enough source data to rank Hesh Evo comfort or heft. |
| Bluetooth | Bluetooth Specification Version 5.2 | Bluetooth 5.0; approximately 30+ feet (10+ meters) range | Both use mainstream Bluetooth, with Sony documenting the newer specification. |
| Supported codecs | SBC and AAC | Not stated on the cited support page | Codec differences cannot be evaluated for the Hesh Evo from the available documentation. |
| Finding feature | Not stated in the cited Sony specification | Tile finding supported | Tile is a clear Hesh Evo differentiator if you often misplace headphones. |
| Companion-app support | Not evaluated here | Skullcandy says the Hesh Evo does not pair with the Skullcandy App | Do not buy the Hesh Evo expecting app-based setup or controls from that app. |
| Wired input | Wired stereo-mini input listed | Not stated on the cited support page | Sony has a documented wired fallback; Hesh Evo wired behavior needs confirmation from the exact regional listing or manual. |
| Multipoint or device switching | Independent testing reported an advantage for Sony over Hesh ANC | Not established for Hesh Evo | The test involved Hesh ANC, not Hesh Evo, so it is informative about Sony but not proof of a Hesh Evo result. |
| Warranty and current street price | Not stated in the supplied manufacturer specifications | Not stated in the supplied support information | Check the terms and live price for your country before buying; neither can be inferred safely from this comparison. |
Does the Hesh Evo have noise canceling?
Skullcandy’s Hesh Evo support documentation lists Bluetooth behavior, battery information, charging, Tile and app compatibility, but it does not list active noise canceling or an ambient/transparency mode. On that evidence, the Hesh Evo should be treated as a conventional sealed Bluetooth headphone rather than an ANC headphone. This is a documentation-based conclusion, not a claim that a laboratory measured the model and found a particular isolation level.
The Sony WH-CH720N has explicit ANC documentation. Sony identifies Dual Noise Sensor technology, two microphones in each earcup and its Integrated Processor V1. It also lists an Ambient Sound mode, which is useful when you need to hear announcements or a colleague without removing the headphones.
That distinction is decisive for travel. Passive earcup isolation can reduce some high-frequency noise, but it is not the same category of feature as an electronic noise-control system. If your priority is aircraft engine rumble, a train, air-conditioning noise or a busy open-plan office, the Sony is the only model in this comparison with a documented active system.

Battery life and charging: why the claims are not directly equal
Sony specifies separate maximum playback figures for the WH-CH720N depending on whether noise canceling is enabled: the manufacturer states up to 35 hours with ANC on and up to 50 hours with it off. Skullcandy states up to 36+ hours of play time for the Hesh Evo. Those figures are useful for planning, but they were not published as a shared, independently controlled test.
In practical terms, Sony’s claim tells you what to expect when you actually use its headline feature. The ANC-on figure is the relevant one for a commute or flight; the longer ANC-off figure applies when you use the headphones more like ordinary Bluetooth headphones. Skullcandy’s single figure does not identify an equivalent noise-control condition, so it should not be presented as proof that Hesh Evo lasts longer than Sony in comparable use.

Charging behavior favors Skullcandy on the published specifications. A full Hesh Evo charge is listed as 1 hour 45 minutes over USB-C, and Skullcandy claims that a 10-minute charge supplies more than three hours of playtime. Sony lists approximately 3.5 hours for a full charge. Actual endurance will vary with volume, wireless conditions, call use and battery age, so treat all of these as manufacturer maximums rather than guaranteed daily results.
Weight, comfort and portability
Sony lists the WH-CH720N at approximately 6.8 ounces (192 grams), which is a useful number for people who wear headphones for several hours. A lower listed weight can reduce neck fatigue, but it does not by itself prove that the ear cushions, clamping force or headband will suit you.
The cited Hesh Evo support page does not publish a weight. It also does not provide a standardized comfort test, clamp-force measurement or long-session wear assessment. Consequently, it would be misleading to declare the Hesh Evo more comfortable, heavier or lighter from the available material.
Portability details such as a supplied case, folding geometry and hinge design are not established in the supplied specifications for a direct apples-to-apples comparison. Check the exact package contents and product manual for your region if a travel case or compact fold is important.
Sound quality: what is known and what is not
Neither cited manufacturer page provides a frequency-response chart or a controlled listening comparison for these two exact models. The available independent comparison measured the WH-CH720N against Hesh ANC, not Hesh Evo. It reported better sound balance for Sony in that matchup, but the different Skullcandy model prevents using that result as a direct Hesh Evo verdict.

For a buyer, this means sound preference remains the least settled part of the decision. Do not assume that the Hesh Evo sounds like Hesh ANC, or that a conclusion about Hesh ANC’s bass, treble or detail automatically applies to Hesh Evo. If you are sensitive to tonal balance, buy from a retailer with a clear return window or listen in person, because the cited specifications cannot answer that question.

The supplied Hesh Evo documentation does not include a microphone test, voice-sample result, pickup pattern or background-noise assessment. Sony’s product description identifies two microphones in each earcup as part of its noise-control system, but that hardware description is not the same as an independently measured call-quality score.
For occasional calls, either headset may be adequate in a quiet room, but the evidence does not justify promising that one will sound clearer in a windy street, a café or a busy office. If calls are central to your work, verify the return policy and test the microphone with the exact phone or computer you use. Also confirm whether your conferencing application changes Bluetooth profiles during calls, because that can affect perceived audio quality regardless of the headphone model.
Bluetooth, device switching and apps
Bluetooth versions and range
The WH-CH720N uses Bluetooth Specification Version 5.2 and supports SBC and AAC. Skullcandy lists Bluetooth 5.0 for Hesh Evo and an approximate range of 30-plus feet (10-plus meters). Bluetooth version numbers alone do not predict a connection’s performance through walls or in a crowded radio environment; phone, computer and local interference matter as well.
Multiple devices
An independent test found the Sony WH-CH720N better than Hesh ANC for multi-device pairing. Because the Skullcandy model in that test was Hesh ANC, not Hesh Evo, you should not treat it as proof that Hesh Evo lacks or includes a particular switching feature. If you regularly move between a phone and a laptop, confirm the Hesh Evo’s exact switching behavior in its current manual or retailer listing before purchase.

Apps and finding a misplaced headset
Skullcandy explicitly says that Hesh Evo does not pair with the Skullcandy App. That rules out relying on that app for Hesh Evo-specific controls or setup. The model does support Tile finding, which can help locate the headphones through Tile’s system when they are misplaced. Tile is especially practical for a headset that lives in a backpack or shared workspace, although it does not recover headphones that are out of battery or physically damaged.
Wired listening and offline use
Sony lists a wired stereo-mini input for the WH-CH720N. That gives you a fallback for a device with a headphone jack, an in-flight entertainment system or a situation in which wireless radio use is restricted. The cited Hesh Evo support information does not establish whether the model includes a 3.5 mm input, whether wired playback works when the battery is empty, or whether a cable is included. Confirm those details for the exact package before assuming wired use.
A wired connection can also avoid Bluetooth pairing problems, but it does not automatically preserve every wireless feature. Sony’s ANC and ambient behavior may depend on the headphone’s powered electronics, so check the manual if you intend to use noise control while connected by cable.
Which is better for common situations?
| Use case | Better starting choice | Reason | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Air travel and trains | Sony WH-CH720N | Documented ANC and Ambient Sound mode address changing noise and announcements. | The Hesh Evo’s documentation does not list ANC. |
| Open-plan office or study space | Sony WH-CH720N | Active noise control is the feature most likely to reduce steady background sound. | Do not infer a specific ANC reduction level without a test of your unit. |
| Longest simple playback claim | Skullcandy Hesh Evo | Skullcandy publishes a single 36+ hour play-time claim. | It is not directly comparable with Sony’s ANC-on and ANC-off test conditions. |
| Fast top-up before leaving | Skullcandy Hesh Evo | Skullcandy documents a 10-minute charge for 3+ hours of playtime and a 1-hour-45-minute full charge. | Rapid-charge results are manufacturer claims and depend on the charging setup. |
| Finding headphones in a bag or room | Skullcandy Hesh Evo | Tile finding is explicitly supported. | The cited Sony specification does not list a comparable finding feature. |
| Lightweight wear | Sony WH-CH720N, based on published data | Sony provides a 192 g weight. | Hesh Evo weight and comfort measurements are not stated, so this is not a measured comfort ranking. |
| Wired backup | Sony WH-CH720N | A wired stereo-mini input is listed. | Hesh Evo wired capability is not established in the cited support information. |
| Sound or microphone preference | No evidence-based winner | The exact-model primary-source evidence does not settle these areas. | Use an audition or a returnable purchase if those factors decide the purchase. |
Are the Sony WH-CH720N worth paying more for?
Whether the Sony is worth any price premium depends on whether you will use its documented advantages. Paying extra makes the most sense when ANC, ambient listening, a published low weight, a wired input or the Bluetooth 5.2/AAC specification solves a real problem in your routine. A commuter who spends an hour beside road traffic can benefit more from noise control than from a larger theoretical battery number.
Recommended Free Tools
The premium is harder to justify if you listen mostly at home in a quiet room, rarely use wired audio and place the highest value on Tile finding or a fast top-up. In that situation, Hesh Evo’s simpler feature set may be sufficient, provided you accept that its support page does not document ANC or Skullcandy App pairing.

Because current street prices, promotions and stock change by country and date, compare live listings at the time you buy rather than relying on an old price comparison. Check that the listing names Hesh Evo—not Hesh ANC—and that the Sony listing is the WH-CH720N generation you intend to purchase.
A careful buying checklist
- Identify your noise requirement. If you need electronic reduction of engine, HVAC or office noise, select the Sony on the basis of its documented ANC. If you only need ordinary wireless playback, either model may fit.
- Check the exact model name. Hesh Evo and Hesh ANC are different products. Reviews of Hesh ANC are not direct evidence about Hesh Evo.
- Match battery claims to your use. For Sony, use the ANC-on specification when estimating travel time. For Hesh Evo, treat the 36+ hour figure as a manufacturer maximum under unspecified conditions.
- Confirm what matters locally. Verify price, stock, warranty terms, included cable, case, color and return period for your country and retailer.
- Plan for calls realistically. Since the supplied information does not establish Hesh Evo microphone performance or a controlled Sony-versus-Hesh-Evo call test, use a returnable seller if work calls are critical.
- Decide whether finding support is valuable. Tile support is a concrete Hesh Evo advantage for people who often misplace headphones.
- Test comfort and sound during the return window. Published weight and feature lists cannot predict your seal, clamping comfort or preferred tuning.
Limitations of the comparison
A responsible comparison has to separate documented specifications from assumptions. Sony provides detailed information for ANC, ambient sound, weight, Bluetooth, codecs, battery, charging and wired input. Skullcandy provides information for Hesh Evo battery, charging, Bluetooth, range, Tile and app compatibility. The cited Hesh Evo page does not provide weight, codecs, ANC measurements, microphone tests or independent frequency-response data.
The only independent head-to-head result identified here uses Sony WH-CH720N versus Skullcandy Hesh ANC. It can support the observation that Sony performed well in that particular comparison, including comfort, build, sound balance, multi-device pairing and battery, but it cannot prove those same rankings against Hesh Evo. Treating the two Skullcandy models as interchangeable would create a false sense of certainty.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThat evidence boundary is why the Sony is the safer recommendation rather than an unconditional winner in every category. It has more clearly documented features for travel and work environments; Hesh Evo remains a reasonable choice for buyers who value simplicity, Tile and its stated play-time claim.
