Choose the Skullcandy Crusher ANC 2 if powerful, adjustable bass you can physically feel is your priority. Choose the Sony WH-1000XM5 if you need substantially stronger noise isolation for commuting, flights or office work and prefer a cleaner, more balanced presentation. Neither is the universal winner: the right choice depends on whether bass sensation or quiet surroundings matter more.
Quick verdict: Crusher ANC 2 for bass, WH-1000XM5 for isolation
These headphones are built around different priorities. Crusher ANC 2 adds a dedicated Crusher bass driver and app controls for adjustable sensory bass. The WH-1000XM5 puts more emphasis on active noise cancellation and broad-band isolation. That distinction is more important than small differences in specifications.
| What matters most | Better choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Physical, adjustable bass impact | Skullcandy Crusher ANC 2 | Its dedicated 8 mm Crusher driver and adjustable sensory-bass control are the defining features. |
| Low-frequency rumble from buses, trains and aircraft | Sony WH-1000XM5 | RTINGS describes its noise isolation as outstanding from bass through treble and says it greatly reduces bus engines. |
| Office chatter and general outside speech | Sony WH-1000XM5 | Independent testing supports stronger broadband isolation; SoundGuys reports that Crusher ANC 2 leaves some surroundings audible with ANC enabled. |
| Longest stated battery range | Skullcandy Crusher ANC 2 | Skullcandy rates it at 50–60 hours, depending on ANC use, with four hours of playback from a 10-minute charge. |
| More neutral everyday listening | Sony WH-1000XM5 | The Sony is the safer fit when you do not want a bass-enhancement effect to dominate every recording. |
The Crusher ANC 2 is listed at $239.99 on Skullcandy’s product page accessed in 2026. A current Sony street price was not established in the available specifications, so compare live prices before ordering.

How the two headphones create their bass
Crusher ANC 2: bass you can tune and feel
Crusher ANC 2 is not simply a conventional headphone with extra low-end equalization. Skullcandy pairs its 40 mm full-range drivers with a separate 8 mm Crusher driver designed to produce a sensory bass effect. The result is a physical thump as well as more audible low frequencies. You can adjust the Crusher level in Skullcandy’s app rather than accepting one fixed bass preset.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That control makes the Crusher more adaptable than its marketing suggests. At a lower setting, vocals and instruments remain easier to follow; at a higher setting, kick drums, sub-bass and cinematic effects become the main event. Because the sensation is produced by a dedicated driver, increasing it can feel more dramatic than applying a normal software equalizer.
The trade-off is that the bass effect changes the character of the recording. A track mixed with restrained low end can become intentionally overwhelming, and details in the midrange may seem less prominent by comparison. This is a feature for listeners who want impact, not a guarantee of the most accurate reproduction.
WH-1000XM5: controlled low end without a dedicated bass effect
The WH-1000XM5 does not have a Crusher-style sensory-bass driver. Its low end is delivered through its normal headphone drivers and tuning, so there is no equivalent physical-bass control. That makes it the less suitable choice if the main question is whether you can feel a bass hit.
For listeners who switch between podcasts, acoustic music, classical recordings and bass-heavy genres, the Sony’s conventional presentation is easier to live with. It avoids forcing a tactile effect on every source. Bass preference remains subjective, so the evidence supports a preference-based decision rather than a claim that one model has universally better sound quality.
Which has better noise cancellation?
WH-1000XM5: the stronger choice for isolation
Independent testing gives Sony a clear advantage in noise blocking. RTINGS, in a review updated February 10, 2025 and retested July 2, 2026, says the WH-1000XM5 have “outstanding noise isolation performance” and can tackle noise from the bass through treble range. The review specifically notes substantial reduction of bus engines and office chatter.
That broad frequency coverage matters. Aircraft and train noise is mostly low-frequency, while conversations, keyboard sounds and announcements occupy higher ranges. A headphone that only suppresses the lowest rumble can still leave speech intelligible; the RTINGS result indicates that the Sony addresses both parts of the problem more effectively.

Crusher ANC 2: ANC is useful but not its strongest reason to buy
Crusher ANC 2 includes customizable active noise cancellation, but SoundGuys found that its ear pads do not isolate outside sounds particularly well. SoundGuys also reports that, with ANC enabled, you will still hear some surroundings. That does not mean the feature is useless: it can reduce a portion of steady background noise. It does mean you should not buy the Crusher expecting Sony-level quiet on a flight or in a busy office.
Fit affects every ANC result. Glasses, hair and gaps around the ear pads can let sound leak in, and a poor seal reduces low-frequency cancellation first. Even with a good seal, however, the independent results point in the same direction: WH-1000XM5 is the safer choice when isolation is a primary requirement.
Are Crusher ANC 2 good for flights and commuting?
Flights
Crusher ANC 2 can be enjoyable on a flight if you value long battery life and a strong music effect, but its limited isolation is a serious consideration. Cabin engine noise and nearby conversations may remain audible, so you may raise the volume or increase the Crusher level to compensate. Neither response actually removes the noise, and excessive volume is not a substitute for effective isolation.
WH-1000XM5 is the better travel tool when your goal is to hear a film, music or sleep audio without as much aircraft rumble. Its documented broadband isolation also gives it an advantage during boarding and in the terminal, where speech and announcements are mixed with constant background noise. You can still use ambient-sound functions when you need to hear an announcement or talk to staff.
Daily commuting
For a bus or train ride, choose based on what you want from the trip. Crusher ANC 2 turns a bass-heavy playlist into an intentional, high-impact experience and has enough stated battery capacity for repeated commutes. WH-1000XM5 better separates your content from engines, track noise and fellow passengers, making it the more practical option for reading, calls or concentration.

Battery life and charging
| Specification | Crusher ANC 2 | WH-1000XM5 |
|---|---|---|
| Rated battery life | 50–60 hours, depending on whether ANC is on or off; Skullcandy product page, 2026 | Exact figure is not stated in the available regional specification reference; verify the Sony page for your market. |
| Quick charge | Four hours of playback after a 10-minute charge; Skullcandy product page, 2026 | Not stated in the available reference. |
| Effect of ANC on runtime | Skullcandy presents the 50–60-hour range as dependent on ANC state. | Confirm the regional Sony specification because battery figures can vary by operating mode and market documentation. |
The Crusher’s stated range is unusually useful for people who dislike frequent charging. Treat 50–60 hours as a manufacturer rating, not a guaranteed runtime in every listening mode: volume, wireless features and ANC behavior affect actual playback. The four-hour quick-charge claim is likewise a vendor rating.

Do not infer a Sony battery verdict from the missing figure above. Sony publishes battery specifications for the WH-1000XM5, but the exact regional value was not included in the reference used here. Check the specification page for the country where you will buy the headphones and compare the operating condition attached to that number.
Hardware, weight and wearing comfort
Crusher ANC 2 specifications
- Bluetooth 5.2
- 40 mm full-range drivers plus an 8 mm Crusher driver
- 32-ohm impedance
- 332 g listed weight
- 20 Hz–20 kHz listed frequency response
The 332 g weight is important when you plan to wear the headphones for several hours. It does not automatically make them uncomfortable, because head shape, clamp force and pad pressure vary, but it gives the Crusher more mass to manage than many conventional over-ear designs. The dedicated bass hardware is part of the reason the product feels different from a standard ANC headphone.
WH-1000XM5 comfort considerations
The available Sony specification reference documents ambient-sound and noise-canceling functions but does not provide a weight figure in the supplied details. Avoid assuming that the Sony is lighter or heavier based only on its reputation. If weight is decisive for you, check the regional technical sheet and, where possible, try the fit with your glasses or preferred hairstyle.

A comfortable seal improves ANC and usually improves bass consistency as well.
Apps, controls and listening modes
Crusher ANC 2 app controls
Skullcandy’s app is central to the Crusher experience. It lets you adjust the sensory-bass level instead of treating the effect as an all-or-nothing mode. The product also supports customizable ANC, so you can tune the balance between reducing outside sound and preserving awareness. Use the app before judging the headphones: a default setting may not represent the bass intensity you actually want.
A practical approach is to begin with the Crusher control near its lower range, listen to a familiar track with vocals and then increase it gradually. Stop when the kick drum feels satisfying without masking the singer or making cymbals seem distant. Save different preferences for music, films and spoken audio if the app allows profiles on your device.

WH-1000XM5 ambient and noise-canceling functions
Sony’s official specification page documents both ambient-sound and noise-canceling functions. Use noise canceling in steady environments such as aircraft cabins or trains. Switch to an ambient mode when you need to hear a platform announcement, a colleague or traffic around you. The Sony’s value comes from moving between isolation and awareness without removing the headphones.
Because the two products use different priorities, app parity is not a reason to choose one over the other. Choose Crusher controls when bass adjustment is the feature you will change repeatedly; choose Sony’s ambient and noise functions when managing your surroundings is the daily task.
Sound quality: what the evidence does and does not establish
The available reviews establish a strong difference in bass behavior and isolation, not a universal ranking of overall sound quality. Crusher ANC 2 is intentionally colored by its sensory-bass system. WH-1000XM5 is the safer recommendation for a balanced, conventional presentation, but that does not make it automatically more enjoyable for a listener who wants physical impact.
Genre and source quality matter. Electronic, hip-hop, pop and action films can benefit from the Crusher effect. Jazz, classical, acoustic music, podcasts and dialogue-heavy films may be easier to follow with the Crusher level reduced or with the Sony’s less effect-driven presentation. These are listening preferences, not laboratory claims about which headphone reproduces every recording more accurately.

Choose by listening situation
| Your situation | Recommendation | Reasoning |
|---|---|---|
| You want bass you can feel in games, films and music | Crusher ANC 2 | The dedicated Crusher driver and adjustable control are unique advantages in this comparison. |

| You work beside other people and need to reduce voices | WH-1000XM5 | Its tested performance greatly mitigates office chatter; SoundGuys says Crusher surroundings remain audible. |
| You travel often but also want maximum battery headroom | Crusher ANC 2 if bass is central; WH-1000XM5 if quiet is central | Crusher has the longer stated 50–60-hour range, while Sony has the stronger isolation evidence. |
| You alternate between many genres and spoken audio | WH-1000XM5 | A conventional presentation avoids imposing a tactile bass effect on every source. |
| You already own good ANC headphones and want a different experience | Crusher ANC 2 | Its sensory-bass system adds a type of physical impact ordinary ANC headphones do not provide. |
How to set up either model for a fair comparison
- Charge both headphones fully. Start with comparable battery levels so a low charge does not change wireless behavior or your willingness to adjust settings.
- Use the same source and volume. Compare the same lossless or high-quality stream, then match perceived loudness before judging bass or detail.
- Fit the ear pads carefully. Center each pad around your ear and check the seal while moving your head. Poor fit can make one model seem weaker in both bass and ANC.
- Test Crusher ANC 2 with the bass control low, medium and high. This shows whether you prefer the adjustable effect or only the default tuning.
- Test Sony with noise canceling and ambient sound separately. Listen first to a steady noise such as an air conditioner, then to speech, because ANC performance can differ by frequency.
- Use a real commute or office session. A five-minute quiet-room test cannot reveal how much engine noise or conversation remains audible over an hour.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Expecting Crusher ANC 2 to match Sony isolation
The products are not equivalent ANC performers according to the cited independent tests. Buy Crusher for its bass capability and accept that some surroundings will remain audible. If quiet is non-negotiable, select Sony instead.
Judging Crusher bass with the control at the wrong level
The app adjustment is a core feature, not an optional fine-tuning detail. Test several levels with both bass-heavy and vocal recordings. An extreme setting can make the headphone seem muddy even though a lower setting may suit you.
Using battery ratings as guaranteed real-world figures
Skullcandy’s 50–60 hours and four-hour quick-charge result are manufacturer ratings. ANC state, volume and other operating conditions affect runtime. Treat Sony’s regional specification in the same way once you confirm the exact figure.
Comparing specifications without considering weight
Crusher ANC 2 is listed at 332 g. If you wear headphones for a full workday, mass and pad pressure may matter more than a small difference in frequency-response numbers. Try the fit or confirm the return policy before committing.
Buying checklist
- Decide whether tactile bass or maximum isolation is your first priority.
- Confirm the current price and stock in your region; the $239.99 Crusher figure is a 2026 manufacturer-page snapshot.
- Verify the Sony battery specification on the regional page used for your purchase.
- Check that 332 g is acceptable if you are considering Crusher ANC 2 for long sessions.
- Plan to use the Crusher app to set bass and ANC rather than judging only the out-of-box setting.
- For flights, offices and noisy public transport, give greater weight to the independent isolation findings than to marketing language.
- Keep volume at a comfortable level; stronger bass or weaker isolation should not be solved by listening dangerously loud.
Bottom line
Skullcandy Crusher ANC 2 is the specialist choice: buy it when adjustable, physical bass is the experience you are seeking, and its long stated battery life is useful. Sony WH-1000XM5 is the practical choice for commuters, travelers and office workers who need stronger, broad-frequency noise isolation and a less effect-heavy everyday listen. Decide on that priority first, then verify the live price and regional specifications before checkout.
