Short answer: compare these headphones on measured noise reduction, fit, sound tuning, ANC-on battery life, controls and connectivity—not on the presence of an “ANC” label alone. Skullcandy’s current Hesh 540 ANC is the feature-rich option with a manufacturer-claimed 50 hours of battery with ANC enabled, while Crusher ANC 2 targets listeners who want adjustable bass and a heavier design. Sony WH-CH720N has the strongest independent comparative case here, but the available test compares it with the older Skullcandy Hesh ANC, not Hesh 540 ANC. Soundcore Q20i is a lower-cost category alternative, although the available Consumer Reports figures are guide data rather than a live price or a head-to-head result.
Which headphones are actually being compared?
Skullcandy’s official noise-cancelling collection currently includes Hesh 540 ANC and Crusher ANC 2. The sensible budget comparison set therefore includes those two models, Sony WH-CH720N and Soundcore Q20i. They do not represent identical design goals: Hesh 540 ANC emphasizes app-based features and long stated runtime, Crusher ANC 2 emphasizes adjustable sensory bass, Sony is supported by independent comparative testing, and Q20i appears as a value reference in a consumer buying guide.
The table separates manufacturer specifications from independent or editorial assessments. That distinction matters: a microphone count or battery claim describes what a product page promises; it does not prove that one headset blocks more train noise, sounds more balanced or lasts longer in your use.
| Model | What the available evidence establishes | What you still need to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Skullcandy Hesh 540 ANC | Current Skullcandy over-ear ANC model; four external ANC microphones, Stay-Aware mode, app features and THX Spatial Audio are described by Skullcandy. The product page states 50 hours with ANC on and 65 hours with ANC off. | Independent ANC measurements, long-session comfort, sound balance, call quality, actual runtime and the price in your market. |
| Skullcandy Crusher ANC 2 | Skullcandy positions it around adjustable sensory bass and customizable ANC. The manufacturer lists Bluetooth 5.2 and a weight of 332 g, and says it has “our most advanced noise canceling — adjustable 4-mic active noise canceling.” | Whether the bass remains enjoyable at low volumes, how the weight feels over several hours, measured ANC effectiveness and live price. |
| Sony WH-CH720N | RTINGS’ comparison says it is better overall than the older Skullcandy Hesh ANC, citing comfort, build, sound balance, multi-device pairing and battery life. What Hi-Fi?’s July 2026 guide recommends it as a budget ANC choice. | Do not treat the Hesh ANC comparison as a direct Hesh 540 ANC or Crusher ANC 2 test. Confirm current price and stock. |
| Soundcore Q20i | Consumer Reports’ 2026 buying guide lists a score of 72 and a guide price of $70. | The guide figures are not guaranteed current pricing and do not establish comparative ANC, comfort or sound performance against the other three models. |
Start with the type of noise you need to reduce
Active noise cancellation works best when microphones can detect a relatively consistent sound and the headphones generate an opposing signal. In practical terms, low, continuous noise from an aircraft cabin, bus engine or air conditioner is a different problem from nearby conversation, keyboard clicks or a sudden siren. A product can be effective in one situation and merely reduce—not erase—another.
#1 Best Overall
- Hybrid Active Noise Cancelling: 2 internal and 2 external mics work in tandem to detect external noise and effectively reduce up to 90% of it, no matter in trains or offices.
- Immerse Yourself in Detailed Audio: The noise cancelling headphones have oversized 40mm dynamic drivers that produce detailed sound and thumping beats with BassUp technology for your every travel, commuting and gaming. Compatible with Hi-Res certified audio via the AUX cable for more detail.
- 40-Hour Long Battery Life and Fast Charging: With 40 hours of battery life with ANC on and 60 hours in normal mode, you can commute in peace with your Bluetooth headphones without thinking about recharging. Fast charge for 5 mins to get an extra 4 hours of music listening for daily users.
- Dual-Connections: Connect to two devices simultaneously with Bluetooth 5.0 and instantly switch between them. Whether you're working on your laptop, or need to take a phone call, audio from your Bluetooth headphones will automatically play from the device you need to hear from.
- App for EQ Customization: Download the soundcore app to tailor your sound using the customizable EQ, with 22 presets, or adjust it yourself. You can also switch between 3 modes: ANC, Normal, and Transparency, and relax with white noise.
Steady low-frequency noise
For commuting and flights, evaluate how much engine rumble reaches you at a normal listening level. Seal is as important as electronics: glasses, hair and a shallow ear cushion can create a leak that makes any ANC system seem weak. Try the headset with the pads centered around your ears, then repeat with ANC on and off at the same volume. The useful comparison is the change in background noise, not whether the cabin becomes silent.
Voices and irregular sounds
Speech, clattering dishes and intermittent announcements contain more varied frequencies. Transparency or awareness modes are often more useful than maximum cancellation in these settings, because they let you hear surroundings without removing the headset. Hesh 540 ANC includes Skullcandy’s Stay-Aware feature; treat that as a stated feature and judge its naturalness, delay and wind handling yourself.
How to make a fair listening test
- Use the same source device, codec setting and music or podcast clip for every pair.
- Set a comfortable, repeatable volume before comparing ANC; louder playback can mask residual noise and create a false impression of stronger cancellation.
- Test in at least two environments: a steady low-frequency source and a place with voices or irregular sounds.
- Listen for pressure, hiss or changes in music tonality when ANC is enabled.
- Record observations separately for ANC, transparency and passive isolation. Do not combine them into one score.
Comfort, fit and weight can outweigh an ANC specification
Over-ear ANC headphones are worn for hours, so clamp force, headband padding, ear-cup depth and heat matter as much as the cancellation circuit. A slightly less effective headset that you can wear all afternoon may be more useful than a stronger one that you remove after 30 minutes.

- Ear clearance: your ears should sit inside the cushions rather than touch the driver cover.
- Seal: move the cups a few millimetres while listening to low-frequency noise. A large change indicates fit sensitivity.
- Clamp and glasses: test with the glasses or hat you normally wear.
- Heat: wear the headset for at least 45 minutes before deciding whether the pads become uncomfortable.
- Controls: physical buttons are easier to find while walking; touch controls can be convenient but may react to hats, hair or accidental taps.
Crusher ANC 2’s listed 332 g makes weight an explicit consideration for people who dislike heavy headsets. That figure comes from Skullcandy’s specification, not a comfort test. Hesh 540 ANC’s product information does not establish a comparative weight in the sources available here, so do not assume it is lighter or heavier than the alternatives without checking the current specification.
RTINGS’ direct comparison found Sony WH-CH720N more comfortable and better built overall than the older Hesh ANC. Because Hesh 540 ANC is a newer model, that result is useful context rather than a verdict on the current Hesh 540 design.
Sound character: neutral balance or deliberately strong bass?
Noise cancellation and sound tuning are separate decisions. A headset can suppress a train’s rumble yet still sound too bright, too warm or too bass-heavy for your music.

Hesh 540 ANC
Skullcandy advertises app features and THX Spatial Audio on Hesh 540 ANC. Those tools may let you alter presentation or create a wider effect, but a feature description does not demonstrate accuracy or preference. Listen with spatial processing off first, then enable it for films or games and check whether dialogue remains centered.

Crusher ANC 2
Crusher ANC 2 is built around adjustable “sensory bass,” so it is the clearest choice for listeners who want physical low-end impact and the ability to vary it. More bass is not the same as better detail: strong enhancement can obscure vocals or acoustic instruments. Compare a bass-heavy track, a vocal recording and a podcast with the bass control at its minimum, middle and maximum settings. Keep the setting that preserves speech intelligibility at your normal volume.
Sony WH-CH720N
RTINGS’ comparison credits the Sony with better sound balance than the older Hesh ANC. What Hi-Fi?’s July 24, 2026 guide describes the WH-CH720N as an especially appealing budget ANC all-rounder and says its reviewers found it reliably dampened commute background noise. Those are outlet assessments, not a laboratory ranking against Hesh 540 ANC.
Soundcore Q20i
The available Consumer Reports entry supplies a score and guide price but not enough comparative detail to characterize Q20i’s tonal balance against these Skullcandy and Sony models. Treat EQ flexibility, bass quantity and treble comfort as questions to test in person or verify in a current independent review.
Battery claims need the ANC setting attached
Battery figures are meaningful only when the operating mode is stated. Hesh 540 ANC’s current product page gives a manufacturer claim of 50 hours with ANC on and 65 hours with ANC off. Those are specifications, not independently verified runtime results in the evidence available here. If your priority is uninterrupted travel, test the actual ANC-on endurance with your preferred codec, volume and call habits.
For every model, ask four practical questions:
- How many hours are promised with ANC enabled?
- Does using transparency, spatial audio, high volume or frequent calls reduce the result?
- Is there a quick-charge mode, and how much playback does it provide?
- Can the headset play through a cable when the battery is empty?
RTINGS’ Sony-versus-older-Hesh comparison cites better battery life for the WH-CH720N. Since the page was updated January 12, 2026 and does not compare Hesh 540 ANC, use that finding only for the two tested models.

- Block the World, Keep the Music: Four built-in mics work together to filter out background noise — whether you're in a packed office, on a crowded commute, or moving through a busy street — so every beat comes through clean and clear. (Not available in AUX-in mode.)
- Two Ways to Hear More: BassUp technology delivers deep, punchy bass and crisp highs in wireless mode — then step it up further by plugging in the included AUX cable to unlock Hi‑Res certified audio for studio-level clarity.
- Two Devices, Zero Hassle: Stay connected to your laptop and phone at the same time. Features that change everyday use
Awareness and transparency
Stay-Aware on Hesh 540 ANC is intended to let outside sound in without removing the headphones. Check whether you can hear announcements clearly and whether wind causes excessive noise. A transparency mode is a safety and convenience feature, not evidence of stronger ANC.
App controls and EQ
Confirm which adjustments are available in the manufacturer’s current app: ANC intensity, awareness level, equalizer presets, custom EQ, firmware updates and button remapping can vary by model and software version. Save a neutral profile before experimenting so you can return to a known baseline.
Multipoint and device switching
People who move between a phone and laptop should verify simultaneous connections rather than assuming Bluetooth 5.x provides multipoint. RTINGS specifically credits Sony WH-CH720N with better multi-device pairing than the older Hesh ANC. The available Skullcandy and Q20i material does not establish an equivalent comparative result.

More ANC microphones do not automatically mean clearer calls. Test a call outdoors and in a room with other voices, listening for your own sidetone, background suppression and dropouts. Crusher ANC 2’s four-microphone ANC description is a manufacturer feature claim; it is not a call-quality measurement.
Bluetooth version and practical compatibility
Skullcandy lists Bluetooth 5.2 for Crusher ANC 2. Bluetooth version alone does not tell you codec support, range in your environment or multipoint behavior. Check the phone, computer and operating-system combinations you actually use before buying.

The Skullcandy pages were inspected October 13, 2026 and establish the current lineup and product claims, but no stable launch dates or cross-market prices were established. Sony’s recommendation from What Hi-Fi? is also an editorial judgment, not a promise that the model will be the cheapest option on the day you shop.

Which model fits your priorities?
Choose Hesh 540 ANC when features and stated endurance lead
Hesh 540 ANC is the logical shortlist candidate if you want Skullcandy’s app ecosystem, Stay-Aware and THX Spatial Audio, and you value the manufacturer’s 50-hour ANC-on claim. Buy it only after checking independent comfort, ANC and runtime information for the exact revision available in your region; those comparative measurements are not established by the sources here.
Choose Crusher ANC 2 when adjustable bass is the deciding feature
Crusher ANC 2 suits listeners who specifically want controllable physical bass and are comfortable with a 332 g headset. Keep bass preference separate from noise-cancelling performance: the sensory-bass system does not establish that ANC is stronger than Hesh 540 ANC, Sony or Q20i.
Choose Sony WH-CH720N when the tested all-round case matters most
Sony has the clearest independent support in this set. RTINGS found it better overall than the older Hesh ANC for comfort, build, sound balance, multi-device pairing and battery life, while What Hi-Fi?’s 2026 guide praised its commute-noise reduction and broad appeal. The limitation is important: neither source directly tests Sony against Hesh 540 ANC or Crusher ANC 2.
Consider Soundcore Q20i when the guide price is your ceiling
Q20i belongs on a low-cost shortlist because Consumer Reports’ 2026 guide records a $70 guide price and a score of 72. Those figures do not prove that it outperforms the Skullcandy or Sony models. Confirm current price, return policy, fit and independent ANC measurements before treating it as the value winner.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA practical buying checklist
- Set your use case: flights, daily transit, office concentration, calls or home listening.
- Set a live budget: compare today’s regional prices, not an old guide figure.
- Prioritize fit: verify ear-cup clearance, clamp and heat during a long returnable trial.
- Test ANC by noise type: steady engine rumble and irregular voices should be evaluated separately.
- Listen for your preferred tuning: use vocals, acoustic music, bass-heavy tracks and spoken audio.
- Measure useful battery life: focus on ANC-on runtime and your real volume, calls and app features.
- Check connectivity: confirm multipoint, wired playback, codec support and your device compatibility.
- Test awareness and calls: make sure transparency is intelligible and microphones work in your normal surroundings.
- Keep evidence in scope: never turn a test of the older Hesh ANC into a claim about Hesh 540 ANC.
What the current evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The strongest direct comparison available is Sony WH-CH720N versus the older Skullcandy Hesh ANC, updated by RTINGS on January 12, 2026. It supports Sony advantages in that comparison, not a universal ranking of every current Skullcandy model. What Hi-Fi?’s July 24, 2026 guide adds a positive expert view of Sony’s commute performance, while Consumer Reports supplies a dated Q20i score and guide price. Skullcandy’s own pages establish features and specifications for Hesh 540 ANC and Crusher ANC 2.
No source here provides a numerical, apples-to-apples ANC ranking for all four headphones. The most defensible purchase decision therefore combines the evidence with a returnable fit and listening test. Compare the exact model, firmware, region and price you can buy, and keep manufacturer claims labeled as claims rather than independent results.
