Neither route is universally cheaper or better. Skip’s grocery tab is an Instacart-powered storefront inside the Skip app: you browse an Instacart catalog and an Instacart shopper picks and delivers the order. Ordering directly uses Instacart’s own app or website. The practical winner depends on your address, retailer, basket, delivery slot, substitution choices, and whether the relevant membership benefits apply.
For a fair answer, build the same basket in both routes and compare the final checkout totals—not just item prices or a waived delivery charge. This Canada-focused guide explains the documented fee rules, catalog limitations, membership boundaries, and workflow differences, with information current to October 13, 2026.
What the Skip grocery route actually is
Skip and Instacart are not two independent grocery inventories in this comparison. On October 6, 2026, Skip and Instacart announced a Canadian partnership. Skip customers can open the grocery tab, choose a participating store, browse its live Instacart catalog, and place the order through Instacart’s platform. An Instacart shopper—not a restaurant courier working from a separate Skip catalog—shops for the items.
Instacart’s announcement describes a Canadian network of more than 130 retail banners and over 9,000 locations. That is a company-reported network total, not a promise that every banner, store, product, or delivery window is available at your address. The store list and inventory shown to you are the relevant evidence.
Direct ordering is the conventional Instacart route: open the Instacart app or website, enter your address, select a retailer and delivery window, add products, and check out. Instacart says it connects you with a local shopper and lets direct customers track the order and communicate with that shopper through the app or website.

The embedded Skip route keeps the entry point in Skip, while the catalog, shopping operation, and partnership infrastructure come from Instacart. Do not assume that using Skip creates a second, separate grocery selection.

The table separates documented rules from assumptions. A $0 delivery fee is not a fee-free order: service fees, taxes, tips, and possible surcharges can remain.

How the Skip+ offer works
The current Skip offer describes a $0 delivery fee for eligible Skip+ members on qualifying orders of at least $35 through the “Groceries Powered by Instacart” tab. The minimum is calculated before taxes, tips, and service fees. Alcohol and other age-restricted products are excluded from the promotion and do not help you reach the threshold.
Even when delivery is waived, the checkout can include a service fee, taxes, and a gratuity for the shopper. The offer is subject to change or cancellation, so the eligibility message and total shown at checkout control your order.
Why an Instacart+ subscription may not help in Skip
Instacart’s terms say Instacart+ benefits are not available on every service, including Groceries Powered by Instacart embedded partner experiences. In practical terms, do not assume that an Instacart+ subscription will remove the delivery fee when you order inside Skip. The Skip route has its own documented Skip+ offer, and the checkout should show whether it applies.
What to record before placing a Skip order
- Whether your account is currently eligible for Skip+ grocery benefits.
- The merchandise subtotal that counts toward the $35 minimum after removing excluded age-restricted items.
- The delivery fee, service fee, taxes, tip, and any displayed surcharge.
- The selected retailer, delivery window, and substitution settings.

Delivery and service fees
Instacart says delivery fees vary by retailer, delivery window, and order total. The amount appears when you select a delivery window. Service fees vary with location and cart characteristics and are shown at checkout. A tip is separate from the service fee; Instacart says 100% of the tip goes to the shopper.

Instacart+ eligibility and price
Instacart’s Canada membership page lists Instacart+ at $99 per year or $9.99 per month in 2026. It describes $0 delivery fees on eligible orders, with service and other fees still applying. Instacart+ members receive a reduced service fee, but the exact amount depends on the order and location.
The documented delivery-fee threshold for an eligible grocery order is at least $10 per retailer. That is materially different from Skip’s $35 Skip+ threshold, but it does not make direct ordering automatically cheaper: the two routes can show different item prices, service fees, and available surcharges.
Pickup and additional charges
Instacart’s fees information says pickup orders have no service fee, although some retailers charge a pickup fee equivalent to a delivery fee. Depending on the order, you may also see long-distance, priority, bag, bottle-deposit, or local-tax charges. Priority delivery, when offered, uses a shorter delivery window and may cost extra.
Check every line of the final total. Comparing only a delivery-fee line can hide a higher service fee, a priority charge, or a retailer-specific pickup fee.
Selection, prices, and availability
The network number is not your store list
The announced total of 130-plus banners and more than 9,000 Canadian locations indicates the scale of Instacart’s network. It does not establish that a specific store serves your postal code, that every location offers delivery, or that every store carries the same products. Enter your address in each route before judging selection.
Retailer storefronts can differ
Instacart’s terms state that retailers control pricing. A retailer’s prices on the service may differ from in-store prices or prices on another platform. Different storefronts can also have different selection and fulfillment arrangements. The displayed price is not guaranteed to be the lowest price available for the same product.
Because Skip’s grocery experience is powered by Instacart, you should not expect a broad “Skip catalog” to be independent from Instacart’s catalog. You can, however, see differences in the store presentation, available window, fees, or account eligibility shown in the two checkout paths.

Substitutions matter as much as the item list
A basket that appears identical can produce a different final result if one route offers a different substitution choice or if an item becomes unavailable while the shopper is picking. Set the same substitution preference in both checkouts—such as allowing replacements, choosing a specific alternative, or refunding an unavailable item—before comparing totals.

Convenience and order controls
Skip’s advantage: one familiar entry point
If you already use Skip and want groceries without opening another service, the grocery tab keeps the starting point inside the Skip app. You select a store, browse the Instacart-powered catalog, and check out from that integrated experience. This can reduce app switching, but it does not by itself prove a lower price, faster delivery, or better inventory.
Direct Instacart’s documented controls
For direct orders, Instacart says customers can select an available delivery window, track the order, and communicate with the shopper in the app or website. Window availability and the quality of the experience still depend on your location, retailer, and demand at that time.
Controls that are not established as identical
The partnership information does not verify that tracking, shopper messaging, delivery-window choices, or every substitution control appears exactly the same in the embedded Skip flow. If one of those controls is essential—for example, you need to approve replacements in real time—check the actual interface for your address rather than assuming parity.
No independent head-to-head test establishes that either route is universally faster, easier, or more reliable. Those outcomes vary with the store, distance, slot, basket, and shopper availability.

- Use the same delivery address. Sign in to each route and confirm the exact postal code and unit details. A different address can change store coverage, prices, fees, taxes, and available windows.
- Choose the same retailer. If the store is missing in one route, record that as an availability difference instead of substituting a different retailer and calling the baskets equivalent.
- Build the same basket. Match product size, brand, quantity, and pack count. Do not compare a single-item listing with a multipack or a different weight.
- Set matching substitutions. Use the same replacement or refund preference for each product wherever the interface permits it.
- Select comparable delivery windows. Choose the same window length and timing when both routes offer one. If only one route offers the slot you need, note that convenience difference separately from price.
- Capture the pre-checkout details. Record item subtotal, discounts, and any products excluded from a membership threshold.
- Open the final fee breakdown. Record delivery fee, service fee, tip, taxes, bottle or bag charges, long-distance or priority charges, and any other line item.
- Apply only the membership you actually have. Confirm that Skip+ is applied in Skip and that Instacart+ is applied in direct Instacart. Do not count a benefit that the checkout does not display.
- Compare the payable total and the trade-off. Choose the lower total only if the retailer, timing, substitution policy, and required controls are acceptable. A slightly higher total may be worthwhile if it provides the window or communication option you need.
Do not add the annual or monthly membership price to a single order unless you are deciding whether to subscribe. If you are considering a subscription, calculate its cost separately over the number of orders you realistically expect to place, then compare the resulting per-order savings with the membership fee.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming the two memberships link automatically
The partnership does not establish that Skip+ and Instacart+ accounts or benefits are interchangeable. Treat them as separate eligibility systems unless the current checkout explicitly says otherwise.
Calling a waived delivery fee “free delivery” in the broad sense
Skip+ and Instacart+ can remove an eligible delivery fee while leaving service fees, taxes, tips, and surcharges. Evaluate the payable total, not the delivery line alone.

Comparing different stores or different pack sizes
A lower total is meaningless if one route uses a different retailer, package size, weight, or quantity. Keep the basket and retailer constant.
Treating the network announcement as an address guarantee
The 130-plus-banner and 9,000-plus-location figure is a national company claim from the 2026 announcement. It does not guarantee coverage at your address. Search your own postal code in both routes.
Assuming the lowest displayed item price is the lowest possible price
Retailers set prices on the service, and those prices can differ from in-store or other-platform prices. The displayed item price is not a universal price guarantee.

Ignoring timing and substitution risk
A basket that is cheaper but arrives outside your usable window, or produces unwanted substitutions, may be the worse practical choice. Match the window and substitution settings before deciding.
Troubleshooting differences at checkout
A store appears in one route but not the other
Re-enter the same address, confirm the store name and location, and check whether one route is showing delivery while the other is showing pickup or a different fulfillment option. If the store remains unavailable, treat local coverage as a route difference for that order; do not infer that the entire national network is missing.
The promised $0 delivery fee does not appear
Check the membership account, the qualifying subtotal, the order route, and excluded age-restricted items. For Skip, confirm that you entered through the grocery tab and that the eligible subtotal reaches $35 before taxes, tips, and service fees. For direct Instacart, confirm that the order is eligible for Instacart+ and reaches $10 from the same retailer. If the checkout still does not show the benefit, rely on the amount displayed before placing the order.
The final total is higher than expected
Expand the fee details and look for a service fee, tip, tax, bag or bottle-deposit charge, long-distance fee, priority fee, or retailer pickup fee. Also check whether a product was substituted with a different size or price. Membership discounts do not remove every line.
You cannot find shopper messaging in Skip
Direct Instacart documents shopper communication, but the partnership information does not confirm identical controls in the embedded flow. Check the order screen and help options available in Skip. If real-time communication is essential and the control is absent, direct Instacart is the route with the documented feature.
Bottom line
Choose Skip when its in-app grocery workflow is more convenient and your Skip+ eligibility produces a competitive final total for the same store and basket. Choose direct Instacart when its delivery window, shopper tracking, communication tools, pickup option, or Instacart+ eligibility better fits the order. Because both routes can vary by address, retailer, catalog, and fee breakdown, the only dependable price comparison is the final checkout total for your exact basket.
