New Balance is the stronger fit-led option when you need several width choices, a leather upper, stable cushioning, reflective details, or a traditional lace-up shoe. - Support: Does the midsole and insole keep your foot from collapsing or sliding?
- Fit and width: Is the heel secure, is the forefoot free of pressure, and is there enough room for normal swelling?

- Grip: Is the outsole appropriate for your usual pavement, indoor flooring or damp sidewalk?
- Upper construction: Do you need breathable fabric or a more protective leather exterior?

What Skechers GO WALK offers
Walking-specific design and cushioning
Skechers says the GO WALK collection was engineered specifically for walking. Depending on the style, the range includes Air-Cooled Memory Foam or Air-Cooled Goga Mat cushioning, Arch Fit support, wide-fit versions and waterproof models. These are collection-level features, not a promise that every GO WALK shoe contains every component, so read the specification for the exact color and style.
The GO WALK Workout Walker page describes Max Cushioning dual-density polyurethane heel cushioning and Natural Rocker Technology. Together, those features are intended to provide a cushioned heel and a guided transition through the step. The page also lists an APMA Seal of Acceptance, which is a product designation rather than a guarantee that the shoe will suit every foot.
Hands-free entry
The Hands Free Slip-ins version uses a Heel Pillow. Skechers describes it as holding the foot securely in place while you step in. This is useful for commuting, travel, limited bending ability or anyone who repeatedly removes and puts on shoes during the day. It does not eliminate the need to check heel security: if your heel lifts when you walk, try a different size or a lace-up model.

The GO WALK Workout Walker specification lists a Goodyear rubber outsole and anti-slip performance claims for wet and dry conditions. Those claims apply to that listed style. They are not evidence that every GO WALK outsole has identical rubber, tread or wet-surface performance. For frequent rain, inspect the individual upper and outsole description and avoid assuming that a breathable knit upper is waterproof.

Where Skechers may fit best
- You want a soft, casual walking feel for errands, travel or neighborhood walks.
- You value a breathable insole and easy slip-on entry.
- You prefer a lighter-looking athletic shoe over a traditional leather walker.
- You can confirm that the selected style is offered in your required width.
One important limitation is width consistency. The displayed GO WALK Workout Walker page shows a medium-width version and says alternative widths may not currently be offered for that style. Skechers offers wide-fit products across its range, but you must verify the exact GO WALK model rather than assume every color or version comes in wide sizing.
What the New Balance 577v1 offers
Structured construction
The official men’s 577v1 page calls it an all-leather walking shoe. It lists ABZORB heel cushioning, a polyurethane midsole for stable cushioning, reflective accents and a solid rubber outsole. The women’s page describes the 577v1 as a versatile and durable fitness walker and lists the same main cushioning and outsole elements.
Leather gives the shoe a more structured exterior than a typical knit or mesh walking trainer. That can help when you want a traditional, protective upper, but it may feel less airy than a fabric shoe in hot weather. The 577 is a conventional lace-up, so you can adjust the fit across the instep and heel; it is not a hands-free slip-in.
Widths
The width range is the 577’s clearest advantage for shoppers whose feet do not fit a standard medium. The men’s listing displays narrow B, standard D, wide 2E and extra-wide 4E. The women’s listing displays narrow 2A, standard B, wide D and extra-wide 2E. Width letters are not interchangeable between men’s and women’s sizing, so select the correct gendered size chart and measure both feet.

Weight and visibility
The displayed women’s specification lists 305 grams (10.8 ounces). That figure is for the listed women’s model and size context; it should not be treated as the weight of every 577 version. Reflective accents can improve visibility in low light, but they do not replace lights or high-visibility clothing when walking near traffic.
Where New Balance may fit best
- You need narrow, wide or extra-wide sizing documented for the exact model.
- You prefer a leather upper that feels more structured and durable.
- You want stable polyurethane cushioning rather than a very soft, flexible sensation.

Which has better arch support?
There is no universal winner because arch height, foot shape and tolerance for pressure differ. Skechers’ Arch Fit option is the more explicit named arch-support system, and the brand’s walking guidance places support alongside cushioning and fit. However, Arch Fit is style-specific. Confirm that the exact GO WALK shoe you are considering lists it.

The New Balance 577 does not need a named arch technology to feel supportive. Its conventional lacing lets you control pressure over the instep, while the polyurethane midsole provides a stable platform. A person who dislikes a pronounced insole may prefer that flatter, structured sensation; another walker may prefer the contoured insole in an Arch Fit model.

To compare them fairly, wear each shoe for at least 10 to 15 minutes, walk on a hard surface, and check whether pressure is concentrated under one part of the arch. Support should feel even, not like a hard lump. Stop if you develop numbness, burning or sharp pain.
Which is better for wide feet?
New Balance has the clearer documented advantage on the 577v1 pages because both men’s and women’s versions list multiple width options, including extra-wide choices. That gives you more ways to keep the forefoot from being squeezed while maintaining a secure heel.
Skechers does offer wide-fit shoes, but width availability varies by style. The displayed GO WALK Workout Walker page shows medium width and indicates that alternate widths may not currently be offered. If you need wide sizing, search the exact model’s width selector rather than relying on the GO WALK name alone.

Wide-foot fitting checklist
- Measure both feet late in the day, when they are at their largest.
- Use the larger foot to choose length and width.
- Stand in the shoes with your usual walking socks.
- Confirm that your toes can spread without touching the upper.
- Walk downhill or stop suddenly; your toes should not hit the front.
- Check that the heel stays planted without tightening the laces uncomfortably.
Grip, surfaces and weather
For ordinary dry sidewalks, either shoe can be suitable when the outsole is in good condition. The relevant difference is how specifically the model documents traction. The GO WALK Workout Walker page makes wet-and-dry anti-slip claims and identifies a Goodyear rubber outsole. The New Balance 577 lists a solid rubber outsole but does not, in the cited specification, provide the same wet-surface performance statement.

Do not infer that a rubber outsole makes a shoe safe on every surface. Painted crossings, polished tile, leaves, ice and oil can defeat tread compounds. If wet walking is routine, inspect tread depth and the upper’s water resistance for the exact model, and replace the shoe when the tread is visibly worn.
Entry, durability and all-day use
Entry and convenience
Hands-free Skechers Slip-ins save time and avoid bending, making them practical for travel, quick errands and frequent on-and-off use. New Balance’s laces take longer but permit more precise adjustment, which can matter if one foot is narrower, your instep is high or your feet swell during a long day.
Upper durability
The 577’s all-leather upper is the more traditional choice when you want a substantial exterior that can be cleaned and conditioned. A fabric GO WALK upper may feel cooler and more flexible, but durability and water resistance depend on the specific material and construction. Read the care label instead of treating every Skechers upper alike.
Standing and long walks
For a job that keeps you standing, choose the shoe that leaves no pressure point after an extended trial. Stable cushioning can reduce the sensation of wobbling, while softer foam can feel immediately comfortable but less controlled for some walkers. Alternate pairs when possible so the cushioning can recover between uses.
How to choose between the two
- Identify the non-negotiable. Choose Skechers first if hands-free entry or a soft walking feel is essential. Choose New Balance first if width selection or a leather upper is essential.
- Filter by exact model. Check the listed width, insole technology, outsole and upper for the color and version you will buy.
- Confirm length and width together. A longer shoe is not a substitute for a wider one; excess length can make the heel slide.
- Test on your real route. Walk on the surfaces you normally use, while wearing your regular socks. Keep tags and packaging until you know the fit works.
- Check pressure after time, not just immediately. Reassess after 30 minutes of walking and again after a full day. Persistent rubbing, numbness or new pain means the model or size is wrong.
- Recheck availability and price. Listings change by country, date, size and width. A sold-out page does not prove that every size or region is unavailable.
When to replace either pair
Skechers’ walking guide says most walking shoes need replacing after roughly 300 to 500 miles. That is a broad estimate, not a warranty interval. Mileage, walking surface, body weight and shoe construction all change the result.
Replace the pair when the tread is worn, the cushioning no longer rebounds, or walks begin causing aches that were not present before. Compare the shoes side by side: a collapsed heel counter, uneven sole wear or visible midsole creasing can reveal deterioration even when the upper still looks acceptable. If pain persists after changing shoes, seek assessment from a qualified clinician rather than continuing to increase mileage.
