Choose skate. if you want a free-to-play online multiplayer sandbox, a shared city and Flick-It controls. Choose Session: Skate Sim if you want a more deliberate simulation in which the two sticks represent your feet, weight transfer matters and there is no scoring system. That is a feature-based recommendation from EA and Nacon’s descriptions, not a claim based on independent hands-on testing.
The short answer
skate. and Session: Skate Sim use skateboarding as their subject but ask you to play in very different ways. EA presents skate. as a free-to-play, online multiplayer game and a large social skateboarding sandbox. Nacon presents Session as a simulation inspired by 1990s street skating, with dual-stick foot control, weight transfer and no scoring system.
| If your priority is… | Better-supported fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Free entry and an online social world | skate. | EA describes it as free-to-play, online and multiplayer. |
| Flick-It controls | skate. | EA highlights improved Flick-It controls. |
| Foot-by-foot control and weight transfer | Session: Skate Sim | Nacon says each stick represents a foot and describes transferring weight. |
| A simulation without a scoring system | Session: Skate Sim | Nacon explicitly describes the game as having no scoring system. |
| Making skate videos | Session: Skate Sim | The official Session site describes an in-game video editor. |
| Playing during an active development period | skate. | EA says the game is in Early Access and will continue to evolve. |
Neither choice is automatically “better.” The important question is whether you want to express tricks through a familiar action-game control scheme or learn a more literal model of foot placement and balance. Your preferred pace matters too: a social sandbox encourages drop-in sessions and shared activity, while a simulation without scoring leaves more of the session’s purpose to you.

What skate. is designed to be
A free-to-play online sandbox
EA’s description is unusually clear about the format: “Skate is a free-to-play*, online, multiplayer skateboarding game.” The asterisk and live storefront details still matter for your region, but the core proposition is a downloadable game built around online play rather than a traditional one-time campaign release.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
EA also calls skate. a massive online skateboarding sandbox. That points to a city-scale environment where skating, discovering spots and sharing space with other players are central activities. If you want a game that feels like a persistent place to drop into with friends, this is the closer match of the two.
“Free-to-play” answers the entry-price question, not every possible cost question. EA describes skate. as downloadable through platform storefronts, but current regional listings are the place to check for any optional content, account requirements or other terms. Do not treat the label as a promise that every future feature or item will be free.
Flick-It controls
EA’s official description emphasizes improved Flick-It controls. The name signals a gesture-driven system: you use the stick to initiate and shape tricks rather than directly steering each foot independently. The practical advantage is immediacy. You can focus on lines, ramps and combinations without first learning a separate input language for left- and right-foot balance.

It does mean the game’s published identity is built around Flick-It gestures, social skating and movement through an online world. Players who enjoy learning a compact gesture vocabulary may get to the fun faster; players who want to model each foot separately may find the abstraction less satisfying.
Early Access changes the buying decision
EA says skate. entered Early Access on September 16, 2025. Early Access is not just a label for a launch date; it describes a game that is still being developed. EA warns that bugs and other issues are expected while the game continues to evolve.
Choose this format if you are comfortable with patches, balance changes, unfinished features or occasional instability. If you prefer to judge a game as a finished, fixed product, Early Access is a material drawback rather than a footnote. A free download can still cost you time and patience when systems change or a problem interrupts a session.
Cross-platform play and progression
EA says skate. supports cross-platform play and cross-progression. That is useful if your group uses different consoles or if you may move between supported hardware. It is still a publisher statement about a live service: account linking, supported modes and the way progression carries over can change as Early Access develops. Read the current EA help and store information when setting up your account.

Simulation first, score second—or not at all
Nacon describes Session as a skateboarding simulation inspired by the golden age of street skating in the 1990s. Its official wording is direct: “Inspired by the golden age of street skateboarding, the 1990s, Session: Skate Sim lets you discover real skateboarding and its culture: no scoring system, just you, your skateboard, your spot, and your imagination!”
The absence of a scoring system changes the purpose of a session. You are not necessarily chasing a number, leaderboard or trick-chain grade. The goal can be landing a line cleanly, finding a better angle at a spot or creating footage that looks right to you. Players who want a structured score attack may find that liberating or directionless; players who want self-directed street skating may see it as the point.

This is also why “simulation” should not be read as a promise that the game will feel simple or immediately authentic. Nacon’s description identifies the control and creative philosophy; it does not provide an independent realism rating. Expect to spend time learning the game’s model rather than assuming the label removes the need for practice.
Dual-stick foot control
Nacon’s PS5 description explains the central idea: “Thanks to the dual stick controls, each stick represents a foot, and you must learn to manage them and transfer your weight as in real life on your skateboard.” This is a different control philosophy from Flick-It.
Instead of treating the board as a single object that responds to a gesture, you manage the contributions of both feet. A trick depends on coordination, timing and weight distribution. The control model can therefore feel more demanding at first, but “demanding” is not the same as objectively better or more realistic in every respect. It is a specific simulation choice that rewards players willing to practice.
If you are asking whether the controls will “click,” there is no universal answer. Someone who enjoys deliberate repetition may appreciate the direct relationship between each stick and each foot. Someone who wants quick, expressive inputs may prefer skate. Neither preference is a test of skating knowledge; it is a preference for how much of the physical process you want represented by the controller.
A video editor for creative projects
The official Session site describes an in-game video editor. That makes the game useful for more than landing tricks: you can frame a line, adjust the presentation and create a skate video from your session. Treat this as a creative feature, not proof that Session is superior overall. It matters most if filming and editing are part of what you want from a skateboarding game.
A video tool also reinforces the game’s self-directed structure. You can set a personal objective—such as a clean line or a particular-looking clip—without waiting for a score to validate it. If you primarily want a social city or multiplayer meet-up, the editor may be less important than the online format EA describes for skate..
Are the controls easier in one game?
There is no publisher-backed answer that one game is easier for everyone. The games teach different skills, so the better question is which kind of learning you prefer.
Choose skate. if you want gesture-based progression
- You prefer a single-stick gesture language for initiating tricks.
- You want to spend more attention on movement through a social city than on assigning each foot a separate job.
- You are comfortable learning through an online game that is still in Early Access.
- You want cross-platform play and cross-progression as part of the published feature set.
Choose Session if you want deliberate footwork
- You are willing to practice left- and right-foot inputs separately.
- Weight transfer and board control sound more appealing than fast trick execution.
- You enjoy creating your own lines and footage without a scoring system telling you what counts.
- You like the idea of a 1990s street-skating influence and a video-making workflow.
A player moving from one game to the other should expect to relearn timing. Skill with Flick-It controls does not automatically transfer to dual-stick foot control, and familiarity with a simulation does not guarantee instant comfort in an online sandbox. Give either game a meaningful practice period before deciding that its control model is impossible for you.
Which game is more realistic?
“Realistic” can mean several different things, and the official descriptions support different answers depending on your definition.

| Meaning of realism | What the published features indicate |
|---|---|
| Controlling each foot and shifting balance | Session has the clearer simulation claim: Nacon explicitly maps each stick to a foot and describes weight transfer. |
| Skating in a populated online environment | skate. has the clearer social-world claim: EA describes an online multiplayer sandbox. |
| Recreating a 1990s street-skating atmosphere | Session is explicitly inspired by 1990s street skating. |
| Representing a game still changing over time | skate. is in Early Access, with development and fixes continuing. |
It is therefore reasonable to call Session the more simulation-oriented choice for foot control and weight transfer. It is not evidence that every animation, environment or trick is more realistic, and it does not make skate. an arcade game by definition. Use the narrower, feature-based comparison instead of treating “realism” as a single measurable score.
Online play, social space and creative play
When the social world is the priority
EA’s multiplayer and online positioning makes skate. the natural fit for players who want to meet friends in a shared skateboarding space. The publisher also says the game supports cross-platform play and cross-progression. Those features are publisher statements; the exact operation of accounts, updates and regional services can change as Early Access develops.
EA also says a PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass subscription is not needed to play. That removes a common console-access concern, although you should still check the live store and EA’s current help pages for network, account and regional requirements.
When self-directed sessions are the priority
Session is framed around your board, your spot and your imagination. The lack of a scoring system and the presence of a video editor support a more personal workflow: practice, set up a line, film it and decide whether the result works for you. That can be a better fit than a social sandbox if you want the activity itself to provide the structure.
Cost, access and what to verify
skate. has the clearest access statement: EA calls it free-to-play and says it is downloadable through platform storefronts. No paid game purchase is required to access the basic proposition described by EA, but storefront terms and optional content can vary. Check the listing for your country rather than assuming the same conditions everywhere.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
There is no verified current price, discount or complete retailer listing to use as buying advice for Session. Nacon lists September 22, 2022 as its release date and provides an official PS5 product page, but an old release date does not establish today’s price, edition, stock or regional availability. Match the edition and platform to your console before purchasing. If you see a physical PS5 listing, confirm that it is the edition you actually need.
Do not assume either game requires a particular subscription beyond what the current platform and publisher pages state. For skate., EA specifically says PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass are not needed. For Session, verify the current console or PC store requirements yourself.
Platforms and release status
Platform availability is one of the few areas where you should verify the live store before downloading. Listings can vary by region, edition and date.
| Game | Published platform information | Release or status information |
|---|---|---|
| skate. | EA lists PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. | Entered Early Access on September 16, 2025. EA says bugs and issues are expected while development continues. |
| Session: Skate Sim | Nacon provides an official PlayStation 5 product page. A complete current platform list is not established by the publisher information cited here. | Nacon lists September 22, 2022 as the release date. |
For skate., EA says cross-platform play and cross-progression are supported. EA also says a PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass subscription is not needed to play. These statements do not replace checking the current store page for account, network or regional requirements.

For Session, do not infer a complete platform list, current price or discount from the 2022 release date or from the PS5 page alone. Match the store listing to your console before purchasing or downloading.
How to choose in five steps
- Start with your preferred control model. Pick Flick-It gestures and a conventional trick-input approach for skate.; pick dual-stick foot control and weight transfer for Session.
- Decide whether you want a shared online world. If multiplayer and a persistent social city are central, skate. is the documented fit. If you would rather focus on your own spot and line, Session aligns more closely with the published design.
- Decide whether scoring motivates you. Session has no scoring system according to Nacon. Choose it when self-directed goals are attractive; choose skate. when you want the broader online-game structure.
- Decide how much creative filming matters. If an in-game video editor is a major reason to play, Session has the explicit feature. If meeting players and sharing a city matters more, skate. has the stronger published fit.
- Check your tolerance for unfinished development. skate. is in Early Access, so expect ongoing changes and possible bugs. If that is unacceptable, treat it as a reason to wait rather than a minor inconvenience.
- Verify your exact platform and region. Use the current official EA or Nacon listing for your console or PC. Do not assume that a platform shown for one edition or region applies everywhere.
Common decision mistakes
Assuming “more realistic” means “better for everyone”
Dual-stick foot control can represent a more granular simulation of balance, but that does not make it universally preferable. Some players want that granularity; others want the flow of a gesture-based system. Choose the interaction you want to practice.
Ignoring Early Access
The free-to-play label can make skate. look like a risk-free choice, but Early Access still has a cost in patience. Bugs, feature changes and evolving systems are part of the published status. Read the current EA notes and storefront information before deciding whether to start now.
Using an old platform assumption
EA’s list for skate. includes both last-generation and current-generation consoles, plus PC. Nacon’s available product information confirms a PS5 page but does not establish every current Session platform. Check the listing for your hardware instead of relying on a remembered release announcement.

Expecting controls to transfer directly
Because each game asks you to express skating differently, switching games means adapting to a new timing model. Give yourself a practice period rather than judging the other game after only a few minutes with unfamiliar controls.
Buying from an unverified listing
Do not infer a current price, discount, edition or stock status from a search result or an old release date. Confirm the destination, platform and edition on the live store. For skate., look for the official download path; for Session, confirm that a PS5 or other listing matches your hardware and region.
Verdict: which game should you play?
Pick skate. when your ideal game is a free-to-play online multiplayer sandbox with Flick-It controls, cross-platform ambitions and a social city. Its main qualification is Early Access: EA says it launched on September 16, 2025 and will continue to change, with bugs and issues expected.
Pick Session: Skate Sim when your ideal game is a focused simulation built around two-foot control, weight transfer, 1990s street-skating inspiration and self-directed lines. Its no-scoring approach and video editor are especially relevant if you want to create and film skating rather than chase points.
