The SK hynix Platinum P41 is a fast PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD with high manufacturer-rated endurance and a five-year warranty. Its main drawbacks are that it does not include a heatsink and may need attention to cooling under load. It can suit a compatible PC or a PS5 expansion, but check the slot, physical clearance, and cooling before buying.
What the Platinum P41 offers
The P41 is a single-sided M.2 2280 NVMe SSD that uses PCIe 4.0 with up to four lanes and SK hynix 176-layer 3D TLC NAND. SK hynix lists 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB capacities. Its specifications are manufacturer maximums, not guaranteed results for every computer or workload. SK hynix’s product specifications also list SMART, TRIM, AES 256-bit encryption, TCG Pyrite support, a 0°C–70°C operating temperature range, and a 1.5-million-hour MTBF.
| Capacity | Sequential read, up to | Sequential write, up to | Random read/write IOPS, up to | Endurance rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 500GB | 7,000 MB/s | 4,700 MB/s | 960K / 1,000K | 500 TBW |
| 1TB | 7,000 MB/s | 6,500 MB/s | 1,400K / 1,300K | 750 TBW |
| 2TB | 7,000 MB/s | 6,500 MB/s | 1,400K / 1,300K | 1,200 TBW |
These figures are SK hynix’s published maximums. Actual performance varies with the host interface, workload, drive state, configuration, and temperature. The 500GB version has a lower rated sequential-write maximum than the 1TB and 2TB versions. TBW means terabytes written and is the manufacturer’s endurance rating; it is not a prediction of a specific drive’s lifespan. The product page describes a five-year warranty; check the terms that apply in your region and with your seller. SK hynix product page

High rated PCIe 4.0 speeds
The 1TB and 2TB models are rated for sequential reads up to 7,000 MB/s and writes up to 6,500 MB/s. Those are strong specifications for a PCIe 4.0 drive, though they describe peak sequential transfer rates—not a guarantee that everyday tasks or sustained writes will run at those speeds.
#1 Best Overall
- STORAGE CAPACITY: High-performance 1TB internal solid state drive perfect for system upgrades and enhanced storage capabilities.
- FORM FACTOR: Standard 2.5-inch design measuring 100.5 mm x 69.9 mm x 7.0 mm, compatible with most laptops and desktop computers.
- INTERFACE: SATA III connection delivering reliable data transfer with read speeds up to 560MB/s and write speeds up to 510MB/s.
- PERFORMANCE: TLC (Triple-Level Cell) NAND flash memory technology ensures consistent and dependable performance for everyday computing tasks.
- COMPATIBILITY: Internal SSD designed for seamless integration with systems supporting 2.5-inch SATA storage devices.
High published endurance
The 2TB model carries a 1,200 TBW rating, with 750 TBW for 1TB and 500 TBW for 500GB. Buyers who write large amounts of data can compare these ratings with the endurance specifications of other drives at the same capacity.
Positive independent performance assessment
Tom’s Hardware assessed the P41 positively for performance and power efficiency in its review, while also raising thermal concerns. Those findings reflect that publication’s testing and should not be treated as a result guaranteed across systems. Tom’s Hardware review
What to watch out for
No included heatsink, with thermal considerations
The P41 is sold without an included heatsink. Tom’s Hardware noted heat as a downside in its review. A motherboard’s M.2 cover or a compatible separate heatsink may help, but check the system’s cooling design and clearance before installation. Tom’s Hardware review

PS5 installation requires a fit and cooling check
Windows Central reports that the P41 can work as a PS5 expansion drive and recommends using a heatsink. Check Sony’s current expansion requirements and make sure the chosen heatsink fits the console’s M.2 bay before installing. Windows Central review
Current value cannot be inferred from launch pricing
SK hynix’s 2022 launch announcement gives prices from that launch period; they are historical, not current street prices. Compare the price you can buy each capacity for now with alternatives before deciding whether the P41 is good value. SK hynix launch announcement
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to decide whether it fits your system
- Confirm the slot. Check your computer or motherboard manual for M.2 2280 NVMe support and the slot’s PCIe generation and lane configuration. The P41 uses PCIe 4.0 and up to four lanes; its form factor alone does not establish compatibility with every laptop or motherboard.
- Check physical space and cooling. Confirm the drive fits the M.2 location and that a motherboard cover or separate heatsink can be used without interfering with other components. For PS5 expansion, also check the current console requirements and bay clearance.
- Choose capacity based on your needs and budget. The 500GB version has a lower rated write ceiling and lower TBW rating than the larger models. Do not assume that a higher capacity is better value without comparing current prices.
- Check firmware instructions before updating. SK hynix provides a P41 firmware download on its support page, but a suitable current version for a particular drive is not established here. Check the installed version and follow the manufacturer’s current instructions before applying an update. SK hynix SSD support downloads
Bottom line
The Platinum P41 is a compelling specification-led PCIe 4.0 SSD if your system supports it and has suitable cooling. Its strongest points are rated speed, published endurance, and a five-year manufacturer warranty; the practical trade-offs are the missing heatsink and the need to verify current price, fit, and cooling for your system.
