Either game is a valid starting point. You do not need to play King of Dragon Pass before Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind; the official Six Ages FAQ says, “You don’t need to have played it in order to enjoy this game.” Choose King of Dragon Pass if you want its classic, longer-running clan-management structure. Choose Six Ages if you prefer a newer standalone entry with more combat decisions, spirit interactions, broader exploration and less complicated food production.

The games share the Glorantha setting, but Six Ages takes place thousands of years earlier and follows a different clan. Their relationship is best understood as a spiritual successor rather than a sequel whose story must be experienced in order.

The short answer: start with the systems you prefer

There is no required play order. Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind was designed to stand on its own, and its official FAQ specifically says prior experience with King of Dragon Pass is not necessary. Playing King of Dragon Pass first may give you context for the shared world and a taste of the older clan-management formula, but it is an optional choice, not homework.

For a first purchase, use this rule:

  • Pick King of Dragon Pass for a more established, traditional clan-management experience built around decisions, resources, diplomacy, battles and consequences.
  • Pick Six Ages for a standalone game with a different clan and era, more granular combat decisions, direct interaction with spirits as well as gods, a much larger area to explore according to its creator, and simpler food production.

Those recommendations come from the games’ official descriptions and the creator’s comparison, not from a claim that one has objectively better balance or more enjoyable play. Your preferred mix of management, exploration, combat and mythology matters more than chronology.

How the two games are related

One setting, different eras

Both games are set in Glorantha, a mythology-rich world where clans negotiate with neighboring communities, supernatural powers and one another. Six Ages is set thousands of years before King of Dragon Pass. It follows a new Riders clan with its own myths and political circumstances, so you are not continuing the earlier game’s clan or replaying its plot from another viewpoint.

That time gap also makes the games complementary. Familiarity with Gloranthan concepts may make some references easier to recognize, but the premise of Six Ages does not require you to know the history of King of Dragon Pass. Conversely, starting with Six Ages does not spoil a required sequence of events in the older game; the stories concern different periods and communities.

Spiritual successor, not direct continuation

The practical distinction is important. A direct sequel normally assumes that you remember characters, unresolved plot threads or a previous ending. Six Ages instead carries forward the interactive-story and strategy approach while changing the clan, era and several systems. Treat it as another entry point into the same fictional world rather than as chapter two of one campaign.

How the management systems differ

King of Dragon Pass: the classic clan-management emphasis

King of Dragon Pass presents the clan as a continuing institution whose fortunes depend on choices about resources, diplomacy, warfare and internal priorities. Its official Steam description frames the game as a role-playing and strategy experience: you make clan decisions, manage resources, negotiate, fight and live with the consequences.

This structure suits players who enjoy deciding how a community allocates limited capacity over time. A diplomatic choice can affect a later relationship; a battle can alter security and political standing; and resource decisions are part of the same long-running campaign rather than isolated puzzles. The appeal is cumulative: you learn the clan’s pressures and develop a management style across many decisions.

Food production is the clearest example of the older game’s heavier management side. The creator’s comparison characterizes it as more complex than in Six Ages. That does not mean every decision in King of Dragon Pass is harder, but it does mean players who like detailed subsistence planning may find more to engage with here.

Six Ages: more supernatural and tactical choices

Six Ages keeps the clan-survival framework but shifts the balance of attention. David Dunham, its creator, summarized the change by writing that, compared with King of Dragon Pass, “play is both simpler and richer.” He identifies the richer side as more decisions in combat, the ability to interact with spirits as well as gods, and a much larger area to explore. The simpler side includes food production.

That combination is useful for players who want a substantial strategy game without making food accounting the center of every campaign. You still make consequential clan decisions, but supernatural relationships and travel occupy more of the decision space. The result is not a beginner mode or a reduced game; it is a different distribution of complexity.

Combat, spirits and exploration

Combat decision depth

The creator explicitly says Six Ages offers more decisions in combat than King of Dragon Pass. The evidence does not define a universal difficulty ranking, a number of battle options or a preferred strategy. It does establish where the newer game puts additional attention: players who want to think through battlefield choices should favor Six Ages.

King of Dragon Pass remains a strategy game in which battles have political and resource consequences, but the cited descriptions do not claim the same expanded combat decision set. If your priority is a broader clan-management simulation in which combat is one part of governance, it remains the more natural fit.

Spirits and gods

Both games connect clan decisions to Gloranthan religion, but Six Ages makes the distinction between spirits and gods explicit. Dunham describes appeasing spirits and building shrines to gods as available activities. That gives players two kinds of supernatural relationship to consider rather than treating all religious interaction as one system.

This matters if you enjoy games where belief is practical rather than decorative. A decision about a spirit or shrine can sit alongside trade, raiding and diplomacy as part of the clan’s survival strategy. The cited material does not provide a directly equivalent, feature-by-feature description for King of Dragon Pass, so it is safer to choose Six Ages for the documented spirit-focused emphasis rather than assume the systems are identical.

Exploration scale

The creator described Six Ages’ explored land as “about four times as large” as King of Dragon Pass’s. This figure comes from a 2018 development comparison around the newer game’s release; it is not a present-day independent map measurement or a promise of four times the playtime.

In practical terms, the comparison points toward a game that gives exploration a larger role. If discovering places, meeting groups and dealing with events across a broad territory sounds more appealing than concentrating on a tighter clan-management space, Six Ages has the clearer case.

Narrative scale: scene counts are not playtime

Steam lists Six Ages as having “Over 400 interactive story scenes.” The King of Dragon Pass Steam description lists “nearly 600 interactive scenes.” These are useful indicators that both games contain a large amount of branching, event-driven writing, but they should not be treated as a direct quality or length contest.

A scene count does not reveal how often an event appears, how many branches it has, how long a campaign lasts, or how much content a particular player will see before making different choices. The counts also come from separate storefront descriptions with different wording. Choose between the games for their setting and systems, not because one number guarantees more hours.

Which game fits your priorities?

Choose King of Dragon Pass if you want…

  • A classic clan-management structure in which resource planning, diplomacy, battles and consequences are all central.
  • More involved food-production management, as described in the creator’s comparison.
  • A tighter, established Gloranthan experience rather than the larger exploration emphasis documented for Six Ages.
  • A game whose appeal comes from guiding one community through long-term political and material pressures.

Choose Six Ages if you want…

  • A self-contained entry that does not require earlier knowledge of the series.
  • More combat decisions than King of Dragon Pass, according to the creator.
  • Direct interactions with spirits as well as gods, including appeasing spirits and building god shrines.
  • A territory described by the creator as about four times larger to explore.
  • Less complex food production while retaining consequential clan strategy.
  • To play on Windows 10 or later, macOS, iPhone or iPad where the listed store requirements match your device.

A practical decision process

  1. Decide whether you need a sequel. You do not. The official FAQ confirms that Six Ages is enjoyable without prior King of Dragon Pass experience.
  2. Choose your management profile. Favor King of Dragon Pass for classic, resource-heavy clan administration; favor Six Ages for simpler food production paired with more documented combat and supernatural choices.
  3. Choose your exploration profile. If a larger territory and more travel-related discovery appeal to you, the creator’s “about four times as large” comparison points to Six Ages.
  4. Choose your lore entry point. Both use Glorantha, but Six Ages is thousands of years earlier and follows a different clan. You are not required to learn one game’s plot before the other.
  5. Check your device and accessibility requirements. Confirm the current store listing. For VoiceOver users, the US App Store specifically describes Six Ages as completely accessible via VoiceOver.
  6. Check the live price in your region. Do not compare a US mobile price with a localized Steam price or rely on an old review percentage.

Do you lose anything by starting with Six Ages?

You do not lose required story context. The game’s new Riders clan and earlier historical period give it an independent premise, and the official FAQ explicitly rejects the need to play the earlier title first. You may miss the experience of discovering King of Dragon Pass’s older management structure before seeing its successor’s changes, but that is a matter of personal sequencing, not a content gate.

Starting with King of Dragon Pass has the opposite trade-off: you begin with the older game’s more complex food-production emphasis and classic clan framework, then encounter Six Ages as a broader, more combat- and spirit-focused variation. Neither order is canonically correct.

Verdict

Play King of Dragon Pass first if your main attraction is a classic, long-running clan-management format with substantial resource, diplomacy and food-production decisions. Play Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind first if you want the easier entry point in terms of required background, more combat decisions, explicit spirit interaction, a larger exploration area and simpler food production.

The safest recommendation for an undecided newcomer is Six Ages because it is explicitly standalone and represents the newer design direction. The best recommendation for a player who already knows they enjoy detailed clan administration is King of Dragon Pass. After one, the other is still worth playing: they share a world and philosophy, but their eras, clans and system emphasis are distinct.
