Protect food before pursuing ambitious ventures. In Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind, a sound opening balances seasonal farming, livestock, wealth, magic, relationships, exploration, and defense. You have two actions per season, food sown in Sea is harvested in Earth, and stored food spoils after a year, so survival depends on repeated decisions rather than one stockpile or a fixed build. The aim is to keep the clan capable of responding to the story’s opportunities and crises while its long saga unfolds.
What you are managing in the opening years
Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind is a storybook strategy game with role-playing and resource-management systems set in Glorantha. You lead the Riders clan through more than 400 interactive story scenes, deciding how its people work, trade, explore, worship, fight, and react to events. The official Steam listing describes the game and its 2019 release at Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind.
The immediate problem is that your clan has just migrated. Fields and pastures still need clearing, and quickly built houses need finishing. The official manual says this work can take several years of successful ventures. Those years are not a tutorial bubble: poor food planning, a weak leadership circle, or an avoidable military loss can affect the clan much later.

The manual’s central warning is blunt: You can’t win if your clan starves.
Hunger causes sickness and deaths, and it also damages clan mood. Treat every other project as something that must fit around a food plan, not as a substitute for one.

Set up a workable clan before chasing opportunities
Finish the migration work
Early actions should increase the number of people, fields, pastures, and homes that can support the clan. Successful ventures gradually complete the settlement work begun after migration. When the game suggests reorganizing the clan circle, consider doing so rather than treating the initial arrangement as permanent; the seven leaders’ skills and personalities determine the advice and capability available for later decisions.
Use the starting shrine as a foundation, not a complete plan
On an Easier difficulty setting, the game begins with a food-producing shrine. The manual says a clan will probably want more than one. That does not make a shrine an automatic answer to every shortage: regular production is described as inadequate on its own in the changing world of the game, so useful blessings, rituals, and other sources of food still matter.
Read the current shortage before selecting an action
At the beginning of each season, look at the concerns and reserves shown by the game. A food shortage may make a foraging venture more valuable than an attractive diplomatic errand; a weak herd may make livestock a better use of wealth than a speculative purchase. The opening framework below is intentionally flexible because the story, available leaders, and current threats differ from run to run.
Learn the seasonal clock
The manual says you can initiate two actions in each season. Seasons therefore create an opportunity cost: a season spent on one project is not available for another. Farming also has a built-in delay.

A practical rhythm is to enter Sea with enough people and labor available to sow, then use the following seasons to protect the clan until Earth’s harvest. If an event, expedition, or military call competes with farm work, compare its likely benefit with the harvest you could lose; the game does not guarantee that an exciting venture is worth the timing.

Make food security the first operating system
Watch more than the food number
Food is not just a reserve to be spent. It supports health, population, mood, and the ability to take risks. When food is insufficient, people go hungry, become sick, and eventually die, while clan mood falls. A reserve that looks comfortable can still be misleading if the next harvest is far away or if a seasonal action was missed.
Combine ordinary production with magic and ventures
The manual describes regular production as insufficient by itself in the game’s changing world. Learn useful blessings and establish food-producing magic where possible. Foraging missions and other ventures can supplement production, especially when the clan needs to bridge the time until harvest. These are complements, not permission to neglect sowing or productive capacity.
Use an early-warning checklist
- Check the amount of food available and when the next harvest will arrive.
- Check whether a Sea sowing action has been completed.
- Check whether an expedition or raid would remove people from crop work.
- Check whether a blessing, shrine, or ritual can supplement ordinary output.
- Check mood and health indicators, because hunger is already harming the clan before deaths occur.
- Remember that food kept for more than a year spoils; rotate the reserve through normal consumption and new production.
When forced to choose between a glamorous opportunity and a credible food shortfall, protect the harvest or obtain a reliable supplement first. The clan’s later choices are only available if enough people survive to make them.
Read the seven leaders instead of obeying one voice
Your clan circle has seven leaders. Their skills affect challenges, and higher-skilled leaders generally provide better advice. Advice is not an objective forecast, however: the manual warns that personality and personal agendas can influence recommendations. Treat a leader’s suggestion as evidence with a point of view, then compare it with the clan’s reserves, the season, and the consequences you can tolerate.

When leaders disagree, do not average their recommendations mechanically. Identify which skill is relevant to the decision, note what each leader may gain from the outcome, and then compare the advice with measurable facts such as food, herds, wealth, and the season. Reorganizing the circle can improve the mix of skills available for future challenges, but it does not remove uncertainty.

Build wealth that can absorb a bad season
The game treats clan wealth broadly. It includes valuable goods, livestock, food, magical treasures, trade routes, and the clan market. This means a clan can look rich in one category while being dangerously weak in another: food cannot always replace horses, and a magical treasure does not necessarily feed people today.

Think of wealth as resilience. A clan with food but no livestock may struggle after a crisis; a clan with herds but no diplomatic ties may lack options; a clan with goods but no harvest plan can still starve. Develop categories gradually instead of converting every available reserve into one spectacular project.
Use trade and relations before you need an ally
Open the Relations screen regularly to learn about neighboring clans and the state of each relationship. Gifts, trade, and alliances can be easier to arrange before a crisis makes everyone desperate. The manual notes that wealth or military strength can make your clan a more appealing ally, so economic development and defense also have diplomatic value.
Diplomacy does not mean accepting every request. Compare the cost of a gift or agreement with the food, herds, and labor you need at home. Consult a capable Diplomacy leader for outsider dealings and a Bargaining leader for economic terms, then consider how the chief’s Leadership may affect negotiations. The relationship you build is part of your capacity to handle later events, not merely a short-term reward screen.
Explore, but price the risk
Exploration can uncover places and information and can make the valley safer. The manual specifically recommends exploring clan lands and warns that failing to explore can allow bandit or monster threats to increase. Exploration outcomes depend on the game’s simulation, so no expedition is a guaranteed profit.

Before sending an expedition
- Check that the clan can absorb the loss of people, time, or supplies if the venture goes badly.
- Check whether the expedition overlaps Sea sowing or other critical crop work.
- Use the relevant leaders’ advice, especially Food for wild plants and animals, Leadership for coordination, and Combat when danger is likely.
- Compare the information or safety benefit with a less risky way to address the current shortage.
Exploration is therefore a balancing action: leaving every unknown area untouched can increase danger, but exploring at the wrong moment can create a food or labor crisis. Rotate it into the seasonal plan when the clan has enough margin to survive an uncertain result.
Keep a defense that protects the economy
The manual suggests having enough Swords and describes fortifications as a way to reduce losses in some situations. Defense is not a promise that every battle will be won. Magic, rituals, leaders’ qualifications, force size, and the objective chosen can all affect a battle’s outcome.
Raiding should not be treated as safe income. If a raid takes place while people are needed for crop work, the harvest can suffer. Before committing, check the season, the number of available warriors, food reserves, and the value of the objective. A defensive investment may protect more future wealth than a raid that succeeds but leaves the clan short of labor.
When a battle is unavoidable, use the Combat and Leadership perspectives, verify that the force is large enough for the objective you selected, and account for the possibility that magic or rituals change the balance. The game’s uncertainty is part of the decision, not evidence that one battle choice is always correct.
A flexible opening framework for the first several years
This sequence is a priority framework, not a turn-by-turn script. The manual emphasizes that choices can have immediate effects or consequences decades later, and different story events can change which step deserves the next action.

- Stabilize the settlement. Continue clearing fields and pastures and finishing houses through successful ventures. Review the clan circle and reorganize it if the available skills do not match the problems you face.
- Anchor the food cycle. Track the next harvest, complete Sea sowing, and use food-producing blessings, shrines, foraging, or other ventures to cover the gap. On Easier difficulty, treat the starting food shrine as a foundation and consider adding more than one over time.
- Replace one-dimensional reserves. Build livestock and useful goods instead of holding only food. Use the manual’s herd and horse descriptions as orientation points, not rigid quotas, and remember that stockpiled food expires after a year.
- Open relationships and routes. Study neighbors in the Relations screen, make affordable gifts or trade arrangements, and seek alliances when the clan can offer credible wealth or strength.
- Map danger and capacity. Explore clan lands when the food and labor margin permits, because ignoring threats can let bandits or monsters grow. Add Swords and fortifications as the situation demands, while avoiding military timing that damages crop work.
- Reassess every season. Use the two available actions for the current shortage, opportunity, or threat. Advance time only when no useful action remains, and change priorities as harvests, relationships, and story consequences alter the clan’s position.

Choosing a difficulty setting
The official game listing confirms multiple difficulty levels, but the available sources do not document a complete, setting-by-setting effects table. The manual does identify one concrete difference: Easier difficulty starts with a food-producing shrine. Choose an easier setting if you want more room to learn the seasonal cycle and story decisions; choose a harder setting when you deliberately want less opening support and more pressure. Do not assume that one setting guarantees a particular event sequence or outcome.

A successful beginning is not a memorized sequence that wins every run. It is a clan that reaches each new story decision with food still coming, enough livestock and wealth to absorb a setback, leaders whose skills fit the question, neighbors worth talking to, explored land, and a defense that does not destroy the harvest. Keep that capacity growing and the game’s long saga has room to develop on its own terms.
