A successful site migration is a controlled change to URLs, infrastructure, or both—not a single launch-day switch. First determine whether URLs will change. URL-changing moves need an old-to-new mapping, permanent redirects, updated page signals, a new sitemap, and monitoring of both old and new Search Console properties. A hosting move that keeps every URL the same follows a different workflow focused on Googlebot access, verification, and server capacity.
Use the checklist below to establish a baseline, test the destination, make the cutover deliberate, and diagnose problems while Google recrawls the site URL by URL.
1. Identify the migration type before planning tasks
Google separates moves that change URLs from infrastructure changes where URLs remain identical. That distinction determines whether redirects, URL mapping, and the Change of Address tool belong in your plan.
| Migration scenario | Examples | Primary SEO work | Search Console action |
|---|---|---|---|
| URL-changing move | HTTP to HTTPS, a domain or hostname change, or a new URL path structure | Map every important old URL, implement permanent redirects, align canonicals and internal links, update hreflang where used, and publish a sitemap of destination URLs | Monitor old and new properties; Change of Address may apply to an eligible domain move |
| Hosting-only move | New hosting, servers, cloud region, or infrastructure while URLs stay the same | Confirm Googlebot can reach the new infrastructure, preserve verification, and validate capacity and response behavior | Use URL Inspection and continue monitoring the existing property; do not submit Change of Address |
If a project includes a domain move, CMS replacement, redesign, and URL restructuring, stage the work when practical. Changing one major element at a time makes a ranking or crawl problem easier to isolate. On a large site, a pilot section can expose implementation errors, but its results are not guaranteed to predict the full migration.

2. Before launch: build the evidence and implementation plan
Record a baseline you can compare after cutover
Crawl the current site and retain the important URLs with their status codes, titles, canonicals, indexability, templates, and other page details your team uses for QA. Add data from Search Console, analytics, and rank tracking to identify pages and queries that drive visibility, links, leads, sales, or other business outcomes. Keep a list of websites that link to important old URLs so outreach and referral checks remain possible after the move.
- Mark business-critical landing pages, high-impression pages, pages with valuable inbound links, and pages that receive meaningful organic traffic.
- Save the current XML sitemap files and robots.txt content for reference.
- Export the Search Console properties, users, and verification details you will need to retain.
- Capture representative samples from every important template, language version, and directory.
This baseline is your comparison set. Without it, a post-launch drop may be visible but difficult to locate or explain.
Create an old-to-new URL map
For each indexable old URL, record the intended destination URL, the reason for any change, and the owner responsible for implementation. A useful map supports engineering, content, QA, and later monitoring rather than serving as a one-time spreadsheet.
- Map a changed URL to its closest equivalent destination, preserving the page’s purpose and main content.
- Give retired pages a deliberate outcome. Do not send every unrelated URL to the homepage merely to produce a redirect.
- Include URLs found in crawl data, sitemaps, analytics, Search Console, server logs, and important external links.
- Account for protocol, hostname, path, trailing-slash, parameter, and language-version changes consistently.
Review the map with people who know the content and business rules. A technically valid redirect can still be a poor destination if it answers a different user question.

Prepare a testable destination site
Before the switch, test representative pages and templates on the new platform. Verify that content, metadata, structured page elements, navigation, images, pagination, and language alternatives render as intended. Plan the exact launch change for robots.txt and any staging noindex directives. Development crawl blocks must be removed or replaced with the production rules at launch.
Make the destination environment available to the people performing QA without allowing accidental indexation. Keep a written record of which access controls, authentication rules, robots directives, and noindex settings are temporary so none are forgotten during cutover.
Choose sequencing, pilot scope, and timing
When feasible, separate major changes. For example, moving the domain first and changing the CMS or design later gives you a clearer diagnostic signal than making all three changes together. A large site may move a relatively stable section first, then use the results to correct tooling or redirect logic before expanding the scope. Treat that section as informative, not as proof that every directory will behave identically.

3. During launch: make every signal point to the destination
Run the cutover from a written checklist with named owners and a timestamp for each verification. The following order keeps the critical dependencies visible.
- Deploy permanent redirects. For URL-changing moves, redirect each old URL to its mapped counterpart with a permanent HTTP redirect such as 301 or 308 where possible. Avoid redirect chains, loops, and a blanket homepage redirect. Keep the old host responding so crawlers and users can follow the mapping.
- Make destination pages self-canonical. Each new page should normally reference its own final URL in the canonical element. Remove canonicals that still point to the old host, protocol, or path unless a deliberate canonical relationship is intended.
- Replace internal links. Navigation, contextual links, image links, feeds, pagination, and structured data references should use destination URLs directly instead of forcing users and crawlers through redirects.
- Update hreflang when used. Every language or regional alternate should reference the new URL set and maintain the required reciprocal relationships.
- Remove accidental crawl and index blocks. Check the live robots.txt, page-level robots directives, authentication, firewall rules, and staging noindex settings. The production site must be reachable and indexable wherever you intend it to be.
- Publish and submit a new sitemap. Include the new canonical URLs, not the old addresses or redirecting entries. Submitting it can help Google discover the destination URLs sooner.
- Preserve Search Console access. Verify that ownership methods, users, and permissions still work. Keep both old and new properties available for a URL-changing move so you can compare processing on each side.
- Use Change of Address only when eligible. For a qualifying domain move, submit the request from the old property and leave the redirects in place. Do not use the tool for an HTTP-to-HTTPS change; Google handles that protocol transition through the normal site-move process.
Run a launch smoke test
Test a sample of high-value old URLs from different templates, directories, languages, and status-code patterns. Confirm that each returns the intended permanent redirect, reaches the correct destination, and does not lose important content. Test new URLs directly as well, including mobile rendering, key forms, login or checkout flows, images, and API-dependent components. Check both the www and non-www hostnames and both HTTP and HTTPS if those variants existed before.
4. After launch: monitor both sides and fix issues in priority order
First hours and first days
Start with the pages that matter most to users and revenue, then expand the sample. Use crawl data, server logs, browser tests, and Search Console reports to confirm that redirects, destination responses, robots rules, canonicals, and sitemap processing match the plan.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Test old URLs and verify the status code, final destination, and page content.
- Inspect new URLs to confirm they are reachable, indexable, and canonicalized correctly.
- Review the submitted sitemap for errors and confirm that it contains destination URLs.
- Watch server load, latency, error rates, and unusual spikes in requests from crawlers or users.
- Check organic clicks, impressions, indexed-page counts, and important queries against the baseline.
Search Console may show warnings that old sitemap URLs redirect during a move. That warning can be expected while the old addresses are being replaced, but it should not be an excuse to leave the new sitemap populated with obsolete URLs.

Diagnose common migration failures
| Symptom | What to check | Typical correction |
|---|---|---|
| Old URLs return errors or the wrong page | Redirect map, rewrite rules, host handling, and destination availability | Correct the mapping and deploy a direct permanent redirect to the closest valid destination |
| Redirects loop or pass through several hops | Protocol, hostname, slash, parameter, and CMS rewrite rules | Collapse the chain so the old URL reaches the final destination in one step where practical |
| New pages are not indexed | Robots.txt, noindex, authentication, canonical targets, sitemap entries, and server responses | Remove accidental blocks, align canonicals, expose the URL in the new sitemap, and request inspection for priority pages |
| Traffic falls for a directory | Whether its redirects preserve intent, internal links point to it, and content or templates changed unexpectedly | Repair the affected mapping or page implementation rather than redirecting unrelated URLs to the homepage |
| Language pages disappear or merge | Hreflang references, language-region paths, canonicals, and reciprocal links | Update every alternate to the final URL set and validate the relationships |
| Google crawls the new site slowly or servers fail | Capacity, rate limits, DNS, firewall rules, latency, and error logs | Increase capacity or remove access barriers while keeping the site stable enough for sustained recrawling |
Keep monitoring after the launch spike
Review old and new properties in Search Console, including indexing, sitemap processing, crawl activity, and search performance. Continue checking important redirects and destination pages rather than assuming launch-day tests represent every URL. Retain the old property and the old host’s redirect behavior while Google processes the move.
Google explains that each old and new URL must be visited for a move to complete and that crawl frequency has no fixed schedule. A medium-sized site may take a few weeks or more for new URLs to gradually replace old ones in Search; larger sites can take longer. This is an expectation, not a service-level promise. Do not set a recovery deadline that the crawler cannot guarantee.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.5. Hosting-only moves when URLs do not change
A server or hosting change with identical URLs should not be treated as a domain migration. The core risk is that Googlebot, users, or Search Console verification can no longer reach the same pages.

- Keep the URL structure, redirects, canonicals, internal links, and sitemap addresses unchanged unless a separate, intentional change is planned.
- Confirm DNS, TLS certificates, firewall rules, authentication, and routing allow Googlebot and normal users to reach the new infrastructure.
- Use Search Console’s URL Inspection to test representative URLs on the live system.
- Preserve verification files, DNS records, or other ownership methods so the property remains accessible to the team.
- Compare response codes, content, robots directives, latency, and error rates before and after the switch.
- Watch crawl and performance reports during the following days and address infrastructure errors quickly.
Google describes a possible temporary dip in crawl rate immediately after a hosting launch, followed by a steady increase over the next days. That behavior is different from a URL move: there is no old-to-new redirect map and no Change of Address submission when the addresses remain the same.

6. Set realistic expectations about rankings and PageRank
Even a technically correct migration can experience temporary visibility changes while Google recrawls and reindexes the site. Google states: “With any significant change to a site, you may experience ranking fluctuations while Google recrawls and reindexes your site.”
Google recommends permanent redirects such as 301 and 308 where possible and says permanent redirects do not cause a loss in PageRank. That does not guarantee unchanged rankings: content changes, internal-link errors, crawl delays, blocked pages, canonical mistakes, and differences in user experience can all affect results during processing.
The practical response is disciplined monitoring, fast correction of implementation errors, and patience with URL-by-URL recrawling. A migration is not complete merely because the new homepage loads or the deployment has finished.

7. Final go/no-go questions
- Have you determined whether the move changes URLs or only hosting?
- Is there a reviewed old-to-new map for every important URL?
- Can the team explain the destination for every retired page?
- Have representative templates been tested without staging blocks?
- Are permanent redirects, self-referencing canonicals, internal links, hreflang, robots rules, and the new sitemap aligned?
- Will the infrastructure handle increased crawling?
- Can the team access both Search Console properties and inspect priority URLs?
- Are owners assigned for launch testing, incident response, and post-launch monitoring?
- Is the old host configured to keep serving redirects while processing continues?
