There is no evidence-backed, universal privacy winner. Siri, Alexa and Google Assistant make different promises about audio, transcripts, account linkage, human review and deletion. The most private choice depends on which data you allow to be saved and whether you use cloud processing, improvement programs or connected services. Compare those settings—not just the assistant’s brand—before deciding.

What “private” means for a voice assistant

A voice assistant has to receive enough of a request to answer it. That is processing, not necessarily long-term storage. A device may detect a wake word, stream audio to a provider, convert speech to text, return an answer and then retain some combination of audio, transcript, command history or account metadata.

Those stages are controlled separately. An option that stops recordings being saved may not stop the request from being processed. Deleting an audio file may leave a transcript, an action record or data held by a third-party service. A setting that is off by default may still have separate controls for existing history, personalization or human review.

The provider pages linked below describe current policies and controls, not an independent laboratory audit. Hardware, software version, country, account state and the particular feature you use can change what happens. Treat the comparison as a guide to settings and data categories, not a permanent scorecard.

What can remain besides audio Apple may retain transcripts and request data according to the feature and settings. Third-party app policies apply when Siri acts through an app. With no recordings saved, transcripts and typed requests remain for 30 days after the last interaction in a chat. Other interaction records can remain. Turning saving off does not erase recordings already saved. Web & App Activity and other Assistant settings can hold related data.
Improvement and human review Improve Siri and Apple Intelligence is opt-in. Apple says only employees can access audio selected for review. Amazon provides a control for using recordings to improve services and develop features. When voice and audio activity is on, samples may be reviewed by trained reviewers after steps to disassociate audio from the account.
Account or device linkage Opt-in improvement data uses a rotating device-generated identifier rather than your Apple Account or email. The identifier can connect requests in one continuing conversation. Alexa history is associated with an Amazon account. If you use more than one marketplace, deletion must be managed for each marketplace. The audio-saving control covers recordings saved to the signed-in Google Account on Google servers. Other account and device settings may apply.
Deletion scope Local Siri history, improvement data and app records have different controls. Deleting local history does not necessarily delete opt-in server-side data. You can delete recordings, transcripts and typed requests, but records needed for functions—such as actions, searched products or shared attachments—may remain. Turning off voice and audio activity does not delete existing recordings. Auto-delete applies to all Web & App Activity items, not audio alone.

Siri privacy: what Apple says and what you can control

Audio processing is different from audio storage

Apple says Siri audio is sent to and processed on Apple servers when a request is not processed on the device. It also says Apple does not store the audio unless you opt into Improve Siri and Dictation. Siri settings on the device indicate whether a request is handled on-device; that indicator is useful, but it does not mean every Siri feature works without a server.

Apple may store a transcript and request data. If Siri uses an app or another service on your behalf, that service’s own terms and privacy policy govern the information it receives. Location access and Siri Suggestions are separate choices: local Suggestions processing, optional location use and encrypted iCloud syncing for Siri settings and personalization should not be confused with server-side audio retention.

What the improvement program changes

Under Improve Siri & Apple Intelligence & Privacy, Apple says it may collect audio, transcripts, responses, conversation history and related request data to improve products and models when you opt in. The data is associated with a random device-generated identifier that rotates multiple times per hour rather than your Apple Account or email. Requests in a continuing conversation can still be connected through that identifier.

Apple says opt-in improvement data may be retained for up to two years, with a small reviewed subset potentially kept longer. It says only Apple employees can access audio interactions for review. Apple also states: “Your request history is not used to build a marketing profile, and is never sold to anyone.” That is Apple’s policy statement, not an independent audit.

Siri controls to review

  • Open your device’s Siri settings and check whether requests are processed on-device or sent to Apple.
  • Review the Improve Siri and Apple Intelligence choice. Leave it off if you do not want to contribute audio and related data to improvement.
  • Use the Siri & Dictation History controls to review or delete the local history available on your device.
  • Check which apps are allowed to use Siri and read each app’s policy when Siri performs an action inside it.
  • Disable location access for Siri if the feature does not need your location.

Deleting local history is not a blanket deletion request for every server-side record collected under an opt-in improvement setting. Those controls address different stores of data.

Alexa privacy: recordings, transcripts and false wakes

How an Echo request is recorded

Amazon says an Echo device shows a visual or audible indicator when it detects the wake word and records audio to stream to the cloud. Amazon calls unintended activations false wakes. You can review and delete recordings, including audio from a false wake, through Alexa Privacy controls.

Choosing not to save recordings

Amazon’s Alexa FAQ lets you choose not to save voice recordings. Under that choice, Amazon says recordings are deleted after processing. That does not make the interaction data-free: transcripts and typed requests remain for 30 days after the last interaction in a chat unless you delete them sooner.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Amazon also offers automatic deletion after three or 18 months. These are policy choices for chat-associated material, not measured retention results for every account. Deleting data or declining to save recordings can reduce personalization and affect features such as Voice ID.

  • Meet Echo Dot Max: Experience rich room-filling sound that automatically adapts to your space and fine-tunes playback. Features a built-in smart home hub and Omnisense technology for highly personalized experiences.

  • Do more with device pairing: Connect compatible Echo smart speakers and smart displays in different rooms, or pair with a second Echo Dot Max to enjoy even richer sound
  • Simple smart home control: Set routines, pair and control lights, locks, and thousands of smart home devices that work with Alexa without needing a separate smart home hub. With Omnisense technology, you can activate routines via temperature or presence detection.
  • Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot Max doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.

Deletion has a wider history than audio

Alexa controls can delete recordings, text transcripts and typed requests, but Amazon says other interaction-related records may remain. Examples include records of actions taken, products searched for, shared attachments and information supplied during an interaction. If you have used more than one Amazon marketplace, history must be deleted separately for each marketplace.

Alexa controls to review

  • Open Alexa Privacy and inspect the voice-history timeline for unexpected activations.
  • Choose whether voice recordings are saved, or set automatic deletion to three or 18 months.
  • Delete false wakes and sensitive requests individually when they appear.
  • Open Manage Your Alexa Data to review transcript and typed-request controls.
  • Check the setting that allows recordings to improve Amazon services and features.
  • Repeat the review for every marketplace connected to your account.

Do not describe the no-recording-save option as “Alexa never records.” The request is still captured and processed, and text or action records can remain for the periods and purposes Amazon describes.

Google Assistant privacy: audio activity and account history

Audio saving is off unless you turn it on

Google says Voice and Audio Activity is off unless you choose to enable it. With the setting off, Assistant recordings are not saved to your signed-in Google Account on Google servers under that setting. Google still processes audio to understand and answer the request.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Turning the setting off is not retroactive. Audio saved before the change remains until you delete it. Google’s controls can delete individual recordings or activity, but the automatic deletion choices apply to all Web & App Activity items—not just voice recordings. Other storage locations and separate Assistant settings may not be controlled by this switch.

  • Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
  • Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. • Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
  • Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.

False activations and human review

Google says a device can capture audio after it detects activation, including some seconds before the activation. If it incorrectly detects the wake phrase and Voice and Audio Activity is on, that recording may be saved. The setting therefore affects false-wake retention as well as deliberate requests.

Google says saved samples may be analyzed by trained reviewers, with steps such as disassociating audio from the account during review. Its Assistant privacy page states: “Google never sells your personal information — that includes your audio recordings.” Google also says conversations are encrypted in transit between the device, Google services and data centers. These are Google’s descriptions of its practices, not a third-party verification.

Google controls to review

  1. Sign in to the Google Account used by Assistant and open Web & App Activity.
  2. Check Include voice and audio activity. Leave it off if you do not want new Assistant recordings saved to the account.
  3. Review existing recordings in account activity and delete individual items or the available history.
  4. If you use auto-delete, remember that the setting covers all Web & App Activity, so it can remove non-audio activity too.
  5. Check other Assistant, device and third-party app settings; this control does not necessarily govern every copy or related record.

If long-term audio retention is your main concern

Apple says Siri audio is not stored unless you opt into improvement. Google’s audio-saving setting is off by default, but previously saved recordings require a separate deletion step. Amazon offers no saved recordings, while retaining transcripts and typed requests for 30 days after the last chat interaction. Compare the exact setting you will use, not the default alone.

  • KEEP YOUR HOME COMFORTABLE - Control compatible smart home devices. Just ask Alexa to turn on lights or touch the screen to dim. Create routines that use motion detection to turn down the thermostat as you head out or open the blinds when you walk into a room.

If transcript and command history matter more than audio

Alexa’s no-recording-save option still leaves text for the stated 30-day period, and other action records may remain. Apple may store transcripts and request data depending on the feature. Google’s audio switch does not govern every Web & App Activity item or every Assistant-related store. Review text history and account activity explicitly.

If human review is your deciding factor

Apple’s improvement program is opt-in and says only employees can access audio for review. Google describes trained-reviewer analysis for saved samples, with disassociation steps. Amazon provides a control for using recordings to improve services. Read the relevant improvement setting and leave it disabled when you do not want that use.

If connected apps are unavoidable

Siri, Alexa and Google Assistant can pass information to apps or services to complete a request. The assistant’s policy cannot replace the recipient’s policy. Limit app integrations, avoid sending sensitive content through third-party actions and remove integrations you no longer use.

A practical privacy checklist for any assistant

  • Identify the account signed in on every speaker, phone, tablet and car system.
  • Turn off optional improvement, personalization or voice-history saving unless you need the feature.
  • Inspect history for false wakes; delete them rather than assuming the indicator prevented capture.
  • Set an automatic deletion period where available, then verify what categories it covers.
  • Delete previously saved recordings separately after switching a saving control off.
  • Review transcripts, typed requests, actions, purchases, attachments and app activity—not only audio.
  • Check location, contact, calendar and smart-home permissions independently.
  • Recheck settings after a major operating-system, app or hardware update.

What the evidence does not establish

The official pages do not provide a current, comparable statistic that ranks Siri, Alexa and Google Assistant by privacy. They describe different products and controls, so a percentage from an older study or a single review sample would not be a fair present-day score. The concrete durations available here—30 days for certain Alexa text under no-recording-save, three or 18 months for Alexa automatic deletion choices, and up to two years for Apple opt-in improvement data—are provider policy statements, not measurements of what every user experiences.

Verdict: privacy is conditional, not a trophy

Siri may appeal if you keep Improve Siri and Apple Intelligence off and favor on-device processing where available. Google may appeal if you leave Voice and Audio Activity off and separately clear old recordings. Alexa gives the clearest explicit no-recording-save choice, but its stated 30-day transcript window and other interaction records still matter. None of those configurations makes all processing disappear or guarantees that connected services hold nothing.

The most defensible answer to “Which is most private?” is therefore conditional: choose the assistant whose controls match your priority, disable optional retention and improvement, audit the account history, and revisit the settings whenever the device or software changes.
