The most important Siri privacy controls are separate switches, not one master setting. In Settings > Siri (or Apple Intelligence & Siri), turn Talk to Siri or Talk & Type to Siri to Off to stop the voice trigger, then review Allow Siri When Locked. For personalized results, open the Apps list and disable learning or suggestion surfaces for individual apps. Finally, decide whether to enable Improve Siri & Dictation under Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements.
Apple uses slightly different labels across iPhone and iPad models, languages, regions, and operating-system versions. The paths below reflect Apple’s current terminology checked in October 2026; choose the closest label shown on your device.
A strict-privacy starting configuration
If you want Siri available only when you deliberately press a button, use this sequence:
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match- Open Settings > Siri or Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Tap Talk to Siri, Talk & Type to Siri, or Requests, then choose Off.
- Turn off Allow Siri When Locked.
- Open Apps, select sensitive apps, and switch off the suggestion surfaces you do not want.
- Review iCloud settings if you do not want Siri personalization to update across devices signed in to the same Apple Account.
- Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements and turn off Improve Siri & Dictation if you do not want Apple to store and review the samples covered by that program.
This setup removes the hands-free trigger and lock-screen access while leaving a deliberate button or text-based interaction available, depending on the features supported by your device.

Stop Siri from responding to a voice trigger
Turn the trigger on or off
On iPhone, open Settings > Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri, then tap Talk to Siri, Talk & Type to Siri, or Requests. The option may be called Siri or Hey Siri on your version. Select that option to enable voice activation, or select Off to stop the device from listening for those trigger phrases.
The one-word Siri trigger is not universal. Apple limits it by supported device model, language, region, and operating-system version. If your menu offers only Hey Siri, that is the voice trigger available for your configuration.
Retrain the voice model
If Siri frequently responds to the wrong person or fails to recognize you, turn the voice-trigger option off and turn it back on. Follow the setup prompts to repeat the voice phrases. This rebuilds the voice model without changing your other Siri settings.
Use a deliberate activation method instead
Turning off the voice trigger does not require abandoning Siri. On iPhone, enable Press Side Button for Siri; on iPad, use the equivalent top-button setting. Supported devices also offer Type to Siri, which lets you submit a request as text rather than speaking it. These methods are useful in meetings, shared rooms, or any situation in which an accidental wake-up would be inconvenient.

Block requests while the device is locked
Allow Siri When Locked is independent of voice activation. You can leave Hey Siri enabled and still prevent requests from the lock screen, or you can disable both controls for the strictest setup.
Open Settings > Siri (or Apple Intelligence & Siri) and turn Allow Siri When Locked off. Siri will then require the device to be unlocked before handling a request. This setting is worth checking even if you already disabled the voice trigger, because button-based activation and other entry points can otherwise remain available from the lock screen.
Control what Siri says and shows
Siri’s interaction settings affect privacy in shared spaces without changing whether Siri is available. In the Siri settings page, review:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Voice and language: choose the voice and language Siri uses for responses.
- Spoken responses: control when Siri answers aloud rather than relying on an on-screen response.
- Always Show Siri Captions: keep spoken responses represented as text.
- Always Show Request: display the request that Siri interpreted, which can help you catch a misheard command before acting on it.
For a quiet, text-first interaction, choose the least-spoken response behavior available on your device and enable captions. The exact choices vary by model and software version, so confirm the resulting behavior with a short test request.

Stop individual apps from feeding or displaying Siri Suggestions
Open the per-app controls
Go to Settings > Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri > Apps, select an app, and review its learning and suggestion switches. Apple enables suggestions for apps by default, but you can change these controls at any time and treat each app differently.
Understand each suggestion switch
| Control | What turning it off changes | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| Learn from this App (wording may vary) | Stops Siri from using that app’s activity to improve personalized suggestions. | Use for apps containing confidential work, health, finance, or private communications. |
| Show in App | Removes Siri suggestions from the app’s own interface where supported. | Use when you do not want contextual prompts inside the app. |
| Show on Home Screen | Stops the app from appearing as a Siri suggestion on the Home Screen. | Use when an app icon or activity should not be surfaced around other people. |
| Suggest App | Prevents Siri from recommending that app as a next action. | Use when you want to keep app recommendations predictable. |
| Suggestion Notifications | Stops notifications generated by Siri’s suggestion system for that app. | Use when proactive prompts are distracting or reveal information on screen. |
These switches govern learning and display surfaces; they do not by themselves turn off Siri or prevent you from opening the app and using its normal features. If an app appears in one place after you disable another, return to its Siri settings and turn off the specific surface still enabled.
Decide how Siri personalization works across devices
What Apple says is synchronized
Apple says information used for Siri personalization is encrypted and remains private across devices signed in to the same Apple Account. This allows preferences and personal context to work consistently on an iPhone and iPad rather than requiring separate setup on each device.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOn iPad, Apple gives examples of personalization data such as your name, home and work addresses, and relationships. That context enables requests such as getting directions home or calling someone by a relationship instead of by a full name.

Stop personalization updates through iCloud
If you do not want Siri personalization to update across devices, disable Siri in your iCloud settings. Apple’s control is intended to stop the cross-device personalization updates; it is separate from the local voice-trigger and lock-screen switches. Review every device signed in to the Apple Account so that an old iPad or iPhone does not retain a different local configuration.
Choose whether to contribute Siri and Dictation samples
Improve Siri & Dictation is an optional analytics setting, not the switch that turns Siri on or off. Find it at Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements > Improve Siri & Dictation.
Apple states: “When you turn it on, you agree to let Apple store and review a sample of your audio recordings and transcripts.” Turn the setting off if you do not want to contribute the samples covered by that program. Turning it off does not remove the separate controls for voice activation, lock-screen access, suggestions, or iCloud personalization, so review those areas independently.
Privacy-focused and convenience-focused setups
There is no single best configuration. The right balance depends on whether you value hands-free access and proactive results more than minimizing exposure on shared screens and devices.

Version, language, and region differences
Apple currently uses both Siri and Apple Intelligence & Siri as top-level labels. Within that page, you may see Talk to Siri, Talk & Type to Siri, or Requests. A menu can also move after an operating-system update.
The one-word trigger and newer Siri capabilities depend on the device, language, region, and operating-system version. Do not assume that a missing option indicates a fault: first check whether your model and selected language support it. On iPad, the physical activation control is labeled for the top button rather than the iPhone side button.
Troubleshoot settings that appear not to work
Siri still activates after you chose Off
- Confirm that the voice-trigger page shows Off, not merely a disabled individual phrase.
- Test the side or top button separately; button activation can remain available even when voice activation is off.
- Check whether another Apple device is responding. Change the setting on each device where you do not want a trigger.
Siri works from the lock screen
Return to Settings > Siri and verify Allow Siri When Locked is off. Test while the device is locked and use a button press rather than relying only on the voice trigger, because the two controls are separate.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →An app continues to appear in suggestions
Open that app under Siri > Apps and inspect every switch: Show in App, Show on Home Screen, Suggest App, and Suggestion Notifications. Disabling one surface does not automatically disable the others.
Personalization differs between devices
Check that the devices use the same Apple Account, then review Siri’s iCloud setting. If Siri in iCloud is disabled, personalization updates will not continue across those devices. Local app and voice settings still need to be reviewed on each device.
The Improve Siri & Dictation switch is hard to find
It is not inside the main Siri page on current versions. Use Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements, then locate Improve Siri & Dictation. If the wording differs, search for that phrase in the Settings app and verify the destination before changing it.
