Start by identifying the assistant and testing the connection: Siri runs on iPhone and iPad, while Google Assistant and Gemini run on Android. Restart the phone, verify that it can reach the internet, and try activating the assistant with a button or on-screen control. If touch or button activation works but the wake phrase does not, retrain the relevant voice-recognition feature. If nothing works, check microphone permissions, default-assistant settings, updates, account restrictions, language, region, VPN rules and work or school policies.
The steps below separate Siri from Google Assistant and Gemini because they have different activation layers. A Gemini app installation by itself does not make Gemini the phone’s active assistant, and a working microphone does not guarantee that a managed account or unsupported language can use every feature.
First, identify what is failing
Voice assistants can fail at several different points: the phone may not hear the wake phrase, the assistant may hear you but lack an internet connection, the correct app may not be the default assistant, or the service may be blocked by account, language, region or administrator settings. Run the quick checks in this order before changing many settings at once.

A two-minute baseline test
- Open a web page in Safari or Chrome over the same Wi-Fi or mobile connection you expect the assistant to use. If pages do not load, fix connectivity first.
- Restart the phone. This clears a stuck assistant process and releases the microphone if another app has retained it.
- Activate the assistant without speaking: use Siri’s side button or typing option, or open the Google, Google Assistant or Gemini interface by touch.
- Ask a short question and watch whether text appears. This separates speech recognition from spoken-output problems.
- Open the camera or a voice-recording app and make a short recording. If those apps also cannot access the microphone, treat the problem as a permission, hardware or another-app conflict rather than an assistant-only fault.
Fix Siri on an iPhone or iPad
Apple’s troubleshooting flow starts with an internet connection and Siri activation. Siri can perform some processing on the device, but many requests still require connectivity. Apple says that when the device is offline, Siri will usually respond with, “I’m having trouble with the connection.”

1. Confirm connectivity and restart
Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data if possible, then load a normal web page. A hotel, airport or workplace network may require a sign-in page before any assistant request can reach Apple’s service. After confirming that data works, restart the iPhone or iPad and test Siri again.
2. Turn Siri activation off and back on
Open Settings and look for the Siri controls. Depending on the iOS release, the menu may be labelled Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri. Turn off the option for listening for the wake phrase, turn it back on, and complete the spoken voice-recognition setup when prompted. If the setting is already on, toggling it off and on forces the setup to be registered again.
Use the exact phrase shown on your screen during setup. Complete the prompts in a quiet environment, at a normal speaking distance, and with the case or screen protector not covering the microphone openings.

3. Test a button or typed request
Press and hold the side button to invoke Siri, or use the typing option if it is enabled on your device. If Siri responds to the button or typed text but ignores the wake phrase, the connection and Siri service are probably available; concentrate on voice setup, microphone access and environmental noise. If the button also fails, continue with the response, software and policy checks below.
4. Make Siri speak its answer
If Siri shows an answer on screen but remains silent, open Siri settings and find Siri Responses. Select Prefer Spoken Responses. Raise the device’s volume while Siri is responding, disconnect Bluetooth headphones or a car system temporarily, and check that the audio output is not routed to another device.
5. Update iOS
Install any available iOS or iPadOS update from Settings > General > Software Update, then restart and retest. Updates can repair assistant components and restore settings that failed to register after an earlier upgrade.

6. Investigate a VPN if Siri settings disappear
If Siri options vanish after a restart, Apple advises checking VPN settings. A VPN profile or managed configuration may not allow Siri traffic. Open Settings > General > VPN & Device Management (the exact path can vary by configuration), review active VPN profiles and test with a permitted connection. On a work- or school-managed device, the administrator may need to change the policy; do not remove a required profile without approval.

Google’s mobile help recommends a strong internet connection, a restart and an up-to-date Google app. The wake phrase also depends on the Hey Google switch and Voice Match, which teaches the service to recognize the speaker.
1. Check the connection and restart
Open a web page, try another network if available, and restart the phone. A connection that is technically present but unstable can let an app open while preventing an assistant request from completing.
2. Update the Google app
Open the Play Store, search for the Google app and install its update if one is offered. Restart after updating. The Google app supplies core Assistant components on many Android phones, so updating a separate assistant interface may not update the part that handles the wake phrase.
3. Enable Hey Google and retrain Voice Match
Open the Google app, enter its assistant settings and turn on Hey Google. Choose the Voice Match setup and repeat the spoken prompts. Speak naturally and use the same language you expect to use for commands. If the phone has several users or a noisy lock-screen environment, test while the screen is unlocked and nearby.
When the toggle is missing or cannot be changed, check whether the phone uses a Google Workspace for Education or another managed account. An administrator can disable settings required for Hey Google. The absence of a toggle in that situation is a policy result, not proof that the microphone is broken.

4. Test touch activation
Open Assistant from the on-screen control or the assigned hardware gesture and submit a typed request. A successful typed or touch request narrows the fault to wake-phrase recognition, Voice Match or microphone access. If no activation method works, continue with permissions, account and default-assistant checks.
Fix Gemini when it will not hear you or answer
Gemini on Android has an extra dependency that often explains confusing symptoms: Gemini is hosted by the Google app. Installing the Gemini app does not automatically make Gemini the phone’s primary digital assistant.
1. Confirm the Google app is the default digital assistant
Open Android’s default-app settings and find the Digital assistant app selection. The Google app must be selected for Gemini to act as the phone-level assistant. Menu names differ by phone manufacturer and Android release, but the setting is normally under Settings > Apps > Default apps or a similarly named default-assistant section.

After selecting the Google app, open Gemini or Google Assistant settings and choose Gemini where the assistant choice is offered. If you previously changed back to Google Assistant, Gemini can remain installed while Google Assistant handles the button and wake phrase. The Gemini app itself can also provide a control to switch back to Google Assistant.
2. Use in-app voice chat when the wake phrase is unavailable
If Hey Google is unavailable for your account, language or device, you can still start a voice conversation by tapping the microphone in the Gemini app, subject to Gemini’s language and availability limits. This is an app-level workaround, not evidence that Gemini is configured as the phone’s default assistant.
3. Review Google app permissions
Open the Google app’s App info screen, select Permissions, and review microphone access first. Google states that Gemini and the Google app use microphone, camera, contacts and location according to the permissions granted. Denying microphone access can prevent voice chat; denying other permissions can limit context-aware or device-related capabilities without necessarily stopping typed prompts.

Set microphone access to the least-permissive option that still supports the feature you want, then test again. If Android presents a one-time or only-while-in-use choice, grant it while using the app and repeat the test with the app open.

Some actions that control phone features require Gemini to be the default digital assistant and require additional permissions. A Gemini conversation can therefore work while a request to change a device setting fails. Confirm the default-assistant selection and grant only the additional permissions needed for that action.
5. Update Gemini and the Google app
Install available updates for the Gemini app and the Google app from the Play Store. Restart the phone after updating. If the app opens but repeatedly stops listening, also check Android’s system update screen and available storage; a nearly full device can prevent updates or leave components in an inconsistent state.
Check microphone access and competing apps
A wake phrase cannot work if Android or iOS denies microphone access, or if another application is actively using the microphone. Video calls, screen recorders, camera apps, voice recorders, accessibility tools and some car or headset integrations can keep the audio route busy.
- Close call, recording and camera apps, then test again.
- Look for the operating system’s microphone-use indicator while the assistant is listening. If another app is shown, close it or revoke its access temporarily.
- Remove a wired headset or disconnect Bluetooth audio for one test. A damaged headset button or unusual Bluetooth profile can redirect input.
- Test the built-in recorder. Distorted, very quiet or absent recordings point toward debris, liquid damage or hardware failure rather than a voice-training problem.
- Clean microphone openings only according to the phone maker’s safe-care guidance; do not push liquid or sharp objects into them.
On Android, use the Google app’s App info and Permissions screens for Gemini-related access. On iPhone and iPad, review the device’s privacy settings for microphone access and ensure Siri is enabled in the Siri settings page.
Account, language, region and policy limits
A correctly configured microphone and an internet connection do not guarantee that every assistant feature is available. Gemini availability and individual capabilities can depend on the signed-in account, language, country, device eligibility and administrator policy. Google Workspace for Education administrators can disable settings needed for Hey Google, and other managed profiles may restrict microphone or assistant use.

Account checks
- Confirm which Google account is active in the Google and Gemini apps. A personal account and a managed work or school account may expose different controls.
- Temporarily test with an allowed personal account only if your organization’s rules permit it. Do not bypass a company or school policy on a managed phone.
- Check whether parental controls, family settings or an enterprise profile limits voice features.
Language and country checks
Compare the assistant language with the language used during Voice Match or Siri voice setup. A feature can be missing when the selected language, country or device is not eligible, even though the app is installed. Change language only when you understand the effect on other assistant commands, keyboard behavior and account content, then retrain the wake phrase.
VPN and network-policy checks
Disable a personal VPN for one controlled test, or use a network allowed by your organization. If the assistant works only when the VPN is off, the profile or network policy is blocking required traffic. On managed equipment, ask the administrator for an approved configuration rather than deleting a required profile.

Use this complete order of operations
Following the same sequence prevents you from retraining a voice model when the real problem is a disconnected network or an unavailable account.

- Test the internet. Load a page over Wi-Fi or mobile data and switch networks if the first one is unstable.
- Restart the phone. This clears stuck assistant processes and releases the microphone.
- Try touch, typing or a button. If that works, focus on wake-phrase training and microphone input; if it does not, continue through the full checklist.
- Check the microphone. Close other recording apps, inspect the operating system’s microphone indicator and make a short recording.
- Retrain activation. Re-run Siri’s voice setup, or enable Hey Google and repeat Voice Match.
- Verify Gemini’s architecture. On Android, select the Google app as the default digital-assistant app and select Gemini inside the assistant settings.
- Review permissions. Give the relevant app microphone access and any additional permission required for the requested feature.
- Install updates. Update iOS or iPadOS, the Google app and Gemini where applicable, then restart.
- Check restrictions. Review VPN profiles, work or school policies, account type, language, country and device eligibility.
- Retest with a short command. Use a simple request before testing a device-control action that may require extra permissions.
When software troubleshooting is no longer enough
If Siri, Google Assistant and Gemini all fail while the camera and recorder also show microphone problems, the phone may have physical damage, blocked microphone openings or a failing audio component. A phone that was dropped, exposed to liquid or recently repaired deserves particular caution. Seek qualified phone support or a reputable repair service rather than repeatedly changing account and assistant settings.
Escalate a managed-device problem to the organization’s administrator when a toggle is disabled, a VPN profile returns after removal or a policy message appears. Escalate an availability problem to the relevant platform’s support channel when the account, language, country or device eligibility appears to be the limiting factor. Keep the exact symptom, phone model, operating-system version, account type and steps that succeeded or failed; those details make support diagnosis faster.
