Siri may not work on CarPlay because Siri is disabled or no longer recognizes your voice, the iPhone is offline, the CarPlay connection is failing, or the car does not support the activation method you’re using. Siri may also be listening but set not to speak its replies. Start by testing Siri on the iPhone, then check the activation method, connection type, and response settings.
First, check whether Siri works on your iPhone
While parked, make sure the iPhone is connected to the internet and try Siri outside CarPlay. If it does not respond on the phone either, fix that before troubleshooting the car. Siri’s settings location and labels can vary by iOS version; look under Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri in Settings.
- Confirm that Siri or “Hey Siri” is enabled.
- If voice activation stopped recognizing you, turn the listening option off and back on, then complete the voice setup again.
- If Siri is missing from Settings after restarting the iPhone, a VPN profile could be involved. Apple Support notes that “Some VPN profiles might not allow use of Siri.” Apple’s Siri troubleshooting guide has further steps.
Try a CarPlay activation method your vehicle supports
CarPlay uses Siri for voice control, but the way you summon Siri depends on the vehicle and its equipment. Apple lists these methods:

- Steering-wheel button: Press and hold the voice-command button until Siri beeps. You can keep holding it while you speak, then release it when you finish.
- CarPlay touchscreen: Touch and hold the Dashboard or Home button.
- Spoken activation: Say “Hey Siri” in a vehicle that supports it.
If “Hey Siri” gets no response, try the steering-wheel button or touchscreen. That helps establish whether Siri is unavailable altogether or whether the spoken wake method is not supported or working. See Apple’s instructions for using Siri in your car.

Check the CarPlay connection you use
Connection checks differ for wired and wireless CarPlay. Follow the branch that matches your setup.
For wired CarPlay
- Disconnect and reconnect the iPhone.
- If available, try another USB port and a different data-capable cable that matches the phone’s connector.
- If you use an adapter or a combination of cables, try connecting directly by USB. Some adapter, cable, and vehicle-system combinations can interfere with wired CarPlay.
A different cable is a troubleshooting test, not a guaranteed fix: Siri settings, the car’s USB port, or other factors may be the cause. Apple’s CarPlay troubleshooting steps cover connection problems.

For wireless CarPlay
- Make sure Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are on.
- Check that Auto-Join is enabled for the CarPlay network.
- If CarPlay does not start automatically, select the CarPlay logo on the vehicle display.
If Siri activates but does not speak
When Siri appears to listen but you cannot hear an answer, check Siri’s response settings rather than treating it as a connection failure. In Siri settings, choose Prefer Spoken Responses under Siri Responses, then check the speaking volume. Siri’s speaking speed can also be adjusted.

If the missing response happens only in one third-party app, the issue may be specific to that app. Apple’s CarPlay guide advises contacting the app’s developer when a third-party app is the problem.

Restart, remove restrictions, and set CarPlay up again
- Restart both devices: Restart the iPhone and turn the car off and back on.
- Check Screen Time: If the iPhone is not detected, make sure CarPlay is allowed under Screen Time content and privacy restrictions.
- Forget and reconnect the car: On the iPhone, go to Settings > General > CarPlay, select the car, and forget it. Then set CarPlay up again.
- Check vehicle stereo firmware: Look for current firmware and update instructions from the vehicle manufacturer. The exact process depends on the car.
Apple’s CarPlay help page includes these troubleshooting steps. Menu labels and setup details can vary by iOS version and vehicle.

CarPlay requires a compatible vehicle and regional support. Siri’s availability, features, and commands also vary by language, country, and region. If Siri works on the iPhone but CarPlay does not, check the vehicle’s compatibility and setup guidance; questions about the stereo or its firmware may need the car manufacturer’s support.

Apple’s support guidance does not establish how often Siri fails on CarPlay, so there is no reliable failure-rate figure to use here.
