Neither model universally lasts longer. A live-service game can keep one title active for years through updates, events and community operations. A single-player series can outlive any individual release through sequels, catalog sales, downloadable content (DLC) and new platforms. The answer depends on what you mean by “lasts”: one game’s supported service life, a franchise’s total lifespan, player engagement, or cumulative commercial returns.

What does “lasting longer” mean?

Comparisons often mix unlike units. The lifespan of one online service is not equivalent to the lifespan of a single-player franchise. A live-service title may operate continuously for many years, while a single-player game may be designed as a finite experience but continue selling and earning from DLC. A series can remain commercially active across several releases even when each game has a clear ending.

Use four separate measures:

  • Supported game life: how long the developer provides servers, fixes, updates and new content for one title.
  • Franchise life: how long a series continues through sequels, remakes, spin-offs or expansions.
  • Engagement life: how long players keep returning, whether through daily activity, occasional catalog play or a community ecosystem.
  • Economic life: how long a game or series produces meaningful revenue from new sales, DLC, subscriptions, recurring purchases or catalog demand.

The available industry evidence does not establish a representative average lifespan, median lifetime profit or risk-adjusted return for either category. Long-lived hits are visible precisely because they are exceptional, so examples such as Minecraft or Candy Crush Saga should not be treated as normal outcomes.

How the two models create longevity

Live-service games: one product, continuously operated

A live-service game is built around continued operation after launch. The developer may add seasons, characters, maps, quests, events, balance changes, cosmetics, competitive resets or other content while maintaining servers and customer support. The commercial model can include an initial purchase, a free-to-play economy, battle passes, subscriptions, expansions or recurring virtual-item purchases.

This creates a route to recurring revenue. McKinsey estimated the live-operations market at approximately $147 billion in 2026 and projected about $167 billion by 2030, equivalent to roughly 3% compound annual growth. It separately projected console live-operations revenue to grow at a 7% annual rate toward parity with full-game sales. These are market forecasts, not evidence that a live-service title lasts longer than a single-player game.

The bargain is demanding: the product must keep earning attention after launch, and the studio must keep supplying reliable operations. As Scopely cofounder and co-CEO Walter Driver put it in a 2025 Game Theory podcast cited by McKinsey, “The only reason to engage with the same product for many years is because it’s getting better the more you play it.” That improvement can involve content, usability, social features, technical performance or a healthier competitive environment.

Single-player games: finite experiences with extended value

Single-player games usually deliver a bounded campaign or set of systems, but “finished” does not mean commercially finished. Revenue can continue through DLC, discounting, catalog sales, ports, subscription placement, bundles, expansions and sequels. A strong release can also raise interest in earlier games in the same series.

Newzoo’s 2025 analysis illustrates the long-tail mechanism in a defined sample of PC, Xbox and PlayStation titles. For games released from April 2020 through May 2025 in the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy and Spain, DLC accounted for 9% of first-year revenue and 23% in years two through five, excluding premium-only titles. Newzoo said the later-period share generally stabilized around 20% to 25%. Those figures describe that sample; they are not an average for every single-player game.

Newzoo’s HITMAN: World of Assassination example combines narrative and gameplay DLC, modes, seasonal collaborations and platform expansions. The analysis tracked monthly DLC revenue between $150,000 and $1.4 million over four years, representing 21% of its tracked revenue. It is a measured case study, not a typical result or a guarantee for another series.

What each model must keep paying for

Longevity factor Live-service game Single-player series
Primary unit One title can remain active through seasons, events and updates. A franchise continues through sequels even when each release is a bounded experience.
Revenue pattern Recurring purchases and extra content can produce continuing revenue. EA identifies Ultimate Team extra content as part of its live-services business. Upfront sales can be extended by DLC, discounts, catalog demand and platform releases.
Ongoing costs Content production, servers, security, moderation, customer support, analytics and frequent technical maintenance. Usually less continuous operational spending after launch, though DLC, patches, ports and expansions still require teams and budgets.
Retention requirement Players must return often enough to sustain matchmaking, communities and monetization. Players may return occasionally, and a game can keep selling without a permanent daily population.
Concentration risk Attention can move to competitors, updates can disappoint, and a crowded market makes discovery difficult. A weak launch can reduce the initial return, but later discounts, word of mouth and catalog sales can extend recovery.
Availability dependency A hosted service may depend on continued server operation. The available evidence does not establish shutdown rates or offline options for every title. A self-contained game may be playable without continuous live operations, but offline access, DRM and platform support vary by title.
Franchise value A successful service can become an ecosystem with creators, communities and multiple products. Sequels, remakes and related releases can keep a franchise active across decades.

Why live-service games can last for years

Recurring content gives players a reason to return

Live operations can align the product with an ongoing social routine. Seasonal events, new challenges and creator activity give established players reasons to come back and give newcomers a current conversation to join. Updates can also repair weak systems, rebalance competition and respond to community feedback.

Microsoft’s May 2026 account of evergreen games described Candy Crush Saga growing from 65 initial levels to more than 22,000. Microsoft also reported that Minecraft had received free updates for more than 17 years at the time of that article. These are company-published examples of successful operation, not model-wide averages.

Trust is an operating asset

Long-running services need players to believe that time and money invested today will remain meaningful tomorrow. Mojang leader Ryan Cooper described updating as “pretty much the main mechanism by which you operate a live game” and said Minecraft had become “so much more than a game now.” Another Mojang passage in the same Microsoft article states: “We’ve been updating Minecraft for about 17 years now and we’ve never charged for an update. That’s been very deliberate because we want to maintain a strong relationship with our players.” The article’s opened text does not identify that speaker by name, so the quotation should not be assigned to a specific individual.

Trust can be damaged by aggressive monetization, unstable patches, opaque odds, abandoned road maps or major changes that disregard the existing community. GDC’s 2025 State of the Game Industry report records developer concerns about oversaturation, declining interest, creative stagnation, predatory practices, microtransactions and burnout.

Scale can create an ecosystem, but scale is not automatic

Minecraft’s Java, Bedrock and Education editions, creator economy and availability on more than 20 platforms illustrate how a service can become an ecosystem rather than merely a sequence of patches. The same Microsoft discussion presents Minecraft and Candy Crush as successful evergreen cases. Their reach should not be read as a forecast for a new project.

GDC’s survey shows the uneven appeal of the model. In 2025, 13% of respondents said they were interested in making a live-service game next, 42% said they were not interested, and 29% were unsure or said the question was not applicable. Sixteen percent said they already worked on live-service games, rising to 33% among AAA respondents. These are survey responses, not counts of all developers or a survival rate for released titles.

Why single-player series can have a long commercial life

Catalog sales do not require a permanent population

A single-player game can keep earning when its community is small because each sale does not require a full matchmaking pool or daily event schedule. A discount can bring in new players years later, and a sequel can renew interest in older entries. Platform expansion can expose the same game to a new audience without rebuilding the entire experience.

Electronic Arts’ financial reporting shows why “recurring revenue” should not be treated as a synonym for “live service.” Its 2024 filing describes recurring revenue as including live services, annual sports titles and catalog titles. Its fiscal 2026 report also reports an 81% digital share of console units sold in fiscal 2026, compared with 78% in fiscal 2025 and 73% in fiscal 2024. EA calculated those figures for Xbox One/Series X and PlayStation 4/5 units, using platform data for digital units and estimates for packaged sales; they are company-specific figures, not global market shares.

DLC can extend a finished campaign

DLC can add story chapters, missions, characters, modes or systems without requiring the developer to maintain an always-on service. The investment is still real: design, testing, localization, certification and support cost money. The difference is that content can be released as discrete expansions rather than as a continuous calendar.

Newzoo’s later-period DLC share demonstrates the potential value of that approach in its defined sample. It does not show that every single-player game will reach 23% of revenue from DLC, nor does it measure the cost of producing that content.

Franchises compound recognition

A series can preserve value even when individual releases are separated by years. Familiar characters, systems and settings reduce the discovery burden for a sequel, while a strong new entry can send players back to earlier games. This is a franchise-level form of longevity, not evidence that every release remains actively supported.

Ampere Analysis figures reproduced in the 2025 Games 2025: The Industry Quest for Growth report show that single-player was a stated preference in Q2 2024 for 67% of respondents in Japan, 58% in the United States, 55% in the United Kingdom, 53% in South Korea, 50% in Germany and 48% in France. These are country-level preferences, not sales shares and not measurements of how long games last.

Successful and failed examples show the spread of outcomes

Live-service survivors

GDC’s 2025 report names Fortnite, Warframe and Genshin Impact as successful continuing services. Their continued visibility demonstrates that a service can retain players and support ongoing content, but it does not reveal the probability that a newly launched service will achieve comparable scale.

Live-service shutdowns and stalls

The same GDC discussion contrasts those successes with Concord, Anthem and Redfall. The contrast matters because a service has a larger ongoing commitment than a finished campaign: when engagement falls, the studio must decide whether to invest, reduce operations or stop supporting it. The available evidence does not quantify shutdown frequency, establish how long each named title operated, or show what happens to every game when its service ends.

Single-player long-tail support

HITMAN: World of Assassination demonstrates that a primarily single-player experience can receive years of additions, seasonal collaborations, modes and platform expansion. Its tracked DLC revenue is evidence of one successful long-tail strategy, not proof that single-player content normally produces recurring income at that level.

Which model is more sustainable for a studio?

Sustainability depends on the relationship between revenue, costs and risk rather than on the label attached to the game.

Live service is a continuing operating commitment

  • Plan for a content pipeline, not only a launch build.
  • Budget servers, security, moderation, customer support and platform compliance.
  • Measure retention and player sentiment, not only initial sales.
  • Protect trust with clear communication about monetization, updates and changes.
  • Design for recovery when an update underperforms or a competitor captures attention.

A service can spread development cost over years if players remain engaged, but it can also consume resources indefinitely without reaching a sustainable audience. Market saturation makes entry difficult, and established services benefit from network effects, content libraries and community habits.

Single-player lowers some recurring burdens but concentrates launch risk

  • Development spending is concentrated before launch and during planned expansions.
  • Revenue may arrive quickly or may take years through catalog sales and discounts.
  • Post-launch support can be scaled to the audience instead of tied to a permanent service calendar.
  • A poor launch can be commercially severe, especially when there is no recurring purchase system.
  • A recognizable franchise can distribute risk across sequels, remakes and back-catalog releases.

The Ampere analysis reproduced in the 2025 industry report describes single-player titles as generally having lower post-launch development budgets than live-service titles. “Lower” does not mean negligible: patches, accessibility improvements, DLC and ports still require money and staff.

How to judge longevity before choosing a model

  1. Define the unit. Decide whether the objective is a ten-year service, a franchise that can produce several releases, a catalog that sells gradually, or a durable player community.
  2. Map the dependency. Identify servers, platform certification, account systems, moderation, third-party technology and any feature that stops working when operations end.
  3. Model the cost curve. Include launch development, post-launch content, customer support, infrastructure, marketing, localization and maintenance rather than comparing only purchase prices.
  4. Identify the retention reason. A service needs a compelling reason to return repeatedly. A single-player title needs a campaign, replayable systems, DLC or franchise momentum strong enough to generate later purchases.
  5. Stress-test attention. Consider what happens when a major competitor launches, when an update is delayed, or when the audience is smaller than forecast.
  6. Plan the exit. For a service, define communication, data retention and any offline or archival mode. For a single-player game, plan patch support, platform compatibility and catalog pricing.
  7. Separate outliers from base rates. Use Minecraft, Candy Crush Saga or other famous survivors as examples of what is possible, not as the expected outcome.

What happens when a live-service game shuts down?

Access depends on the game’s architecture and the publisher’s policies. A title that requires authentication, matchmaking or server-side progression may lose essential functionality when those services stop. A game with an offline mode may remain playable in a reduced form. The evidence available here does not establish shutdown rates or a universal rule for offline access, DRM, purchased items or saved progress.

For players, the practical questions are specific to the title: Is single-player available without a connection? Are local saves supported? Can purchased expansions be downloaded later? Does the publisher provide a sunset notice and a final patch? Do not infer the answers from the genre alone.

What the available market figures do—and do not—prove

Figure What it measures What it cannot prove
Approximately $147 billion live-operations market estimate in 2026; $167 billion projected for 2030 McKinsey’s market estimate and forecast That a live-service game has a longer life or better returns than a single-player game
13% interested, 42% not interested and 29% unsure/not applicable in GDC’s 2025 survey Reported developer interest in making a live-service game next The number of games that will launch, survive or become profitable
EA console digital unit shares of 73%, 78% and 81% in fiscal 2024, 2025 and 2026 EA’s estimated digital share for specified PlayStation and Xbox units Global digital adoption or a comparison of game models
Newzoo DLC shares of 9% in year one and 23% in years two through five DLC’s share of first-year and later revenue in its defined sample A universal DLC rate or the profitability of that content
Single-player preference ranging from 48% to 67% across six countries in Q2 2024 Reported consumer preference by country Sales share, retention or franchise longevity

Bottom line: longevity belongs to execution, not the category

Live-service games have the clearer mechanism for keeping one title active: recurring content, community activity and ongoing monetization. They also carry the heavier operating burden and greater dependence on sustained attention, trust and technical infrastructure. Single-player games have a clearer path to bounded development and long-tail catalog value. A series can remain commercially relevant through DLC, discounts, platform expansion and sequels without keeping one server population alive forever.

Therefore, neither model can be declared the longer-lasting winner from the available evidence. A successful live service may outlive many single-player releases as an active product, while a single-player franchise may endure for decades through successive games and catalog sales. Judge the model by the longevity measure that matters, the costs required to sustain it, the audience’s reason to return and the studio’s plan for both growth and failure.
