A single-button handheld gaming console is a portable game device whose play input is intentionally reduced to one physical button. That limitation is the design: the game, controls, enclosure and feedback are all built around a single thumb action rather than a conventional D-pad, analog stick and multiple buttons.
Two documented projects show the idea from different angles. Dinoboy turns the one-button format into a handheld version of Chrome’s dinosaur-jumping game and adds an NFC-based anti-doomscrolling ritual. Salsa ONE is an open-ended maker console built around an RP2040 Zero, a miniature OLED and simple one-button games.
What a single-button handheld console is
In a one-button design, the button is the complete game interface. A press might make a character jump, flap, shoot or select an item; timing, rather than combinations of controls, supplies the challenge. Menus and secondary actions can be handled through press duration, repeated presses or automatic transitions, but the documented projects center on one physical gameplay button.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThis is a deliberate interaction constraint, not a claim that ordinary handheld consoles have only one input. The goal is usually quick play, comfortable one-handed use, a distinctive industrial design or an approachable electronics project.

Dinoboy: one button paired with an anti-distraction ritual
Hackaday’s Bryan Cockfield reported on Dinoboy on October 14, 2026. Its game is based on the dinosaur jumper shown by Google Chrome when the browser cannot connect to the internet. The player taps one button to make the dinosaur clear obstacles, so the familiar endless-runner mechanic maps naturally to a single input.
The button sits where the player’s thumb naturally rests. The enclosure is hinged into two parts, making the device feel more like a compact clamshell than a flat controller. Its screen can run in black-and-white or use a display style resembling the original Game Boy’s dot matrix.
Dinoboy also places an NFC tag near the hinge. The tag can trigger a phone to enter airplane mode, linking a short game session with a physical interruption to doomscrolling. That phone interaction is an extra feature of this particular build, not a requirement for one-button consoles generally.

Salsa ONE: a reproducible maker architecture
Salsa ONE is an ongoing Hackaday.io maker project described as a portable console with a miniature OLED screen and one-button control designed for comfortable one-handed thumb operation. The creator presents it as a Tiny Games Challenge project and intentionally avoids a custom PCB, allowing the circuit to be assembled on perfboard.
Its documented parts are:
- RP2040 Zero microcontroller board
- SSD1306 OLED display module
- MicroPython firmware
- Buzzer for sound
- Vibration motor for tactile feedback
- CR2032 coin-cell battery
- Perfboard and a 3D-printed case
The combination demonstrates how a complete game loop can fit into a very small embedded system: the microcontroller reads the switch, updates the OLED, and drives sound or vibration to make events readable without extra controls.

How one-button games stay playable
Timing as the main skill
The simplest pattern assigns one press to one action. In a jumper, the game handles forward motion and collision detection automatically while the player supplies the jump timing. Difficulty comes from obstacle spacing, speed and increasingly narrow timing windows.

Press duration and repetition
A short press can represent a normal action, while a held press can produce a different behavior such as a longer jump. Alternatively, repeated taps can advance dialogue, confirm a menu choice or control a rhythm mechanic. These techniques expand the design vocabulary without adding hardware.

An OLED supplies visual state, while a buzzer and vibration motor can signal a hit, jump or menu transition. Salsa ONE’s combination of all three feedback channels is useful when the player is holding the device in one hand and cannot spare attention for a complicated interface.
Parts needed to build a one-button handheld
A practical build can follow Salsa ONE’s architecture. The RP2040 Zero runs the game and reads a momentary switch. An SSD1306 OLED provides a compact monochrome display. A buzzer and vibration motor add confirmation that a button press registered. A CR2032 supplies the documented coin-cell power source, while perfboard connects the parts without requiring a manufactured circuit board. A 3D-printed case positions the screen and button for the player’s thumb.

The exact wiring, firmware files and case dimensions belong to the project documentation; the published component list establishes the architecture but does not state a universal schematic or battery-runtime figure. A different display, battery or enclosure would therefore be a redesign rather than the same documented build.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A sensible build sequence
- Define the single action. Choose one mechanic, such as jump, and decide what happens on a short press, a held press and a release.
- Prototype the input. Connect one switch to the RP2040 Zero and confirm that MicroPython can distinguish an idle state from a press, including basic debounce handling.
- Add the display. Connect the SSD1306 OLED and render a minimal playfield before adding menus or decorative graphics.
- Implement the game loop. Read the button, update the player and obstacles, detect collisions and redraw at a consistent interval.
- Add feedback. Use the buzzer and vibration motor for events that would otherwise be ambiguous, such as a successful jump or game over.
- Build the enclosure last. Once the electronics and control timing work, position the button under the thumb and make sure the screen remains visible during one-handed play.
- Verify power behavior. Test startup, sleep or idle behavior and low-battery symptoms with the selected CR2032 holder and wiring before closing the case.
What is established—and what is not
Dinoboy and Salsa ONE are documented hardware projects, not evidence of a retail product category. The cited coverage does not establish a selling price, commercial availability, battery runtime, market size, adoption rate or sales volume for either device. Treat component availability and cost as variables that must be checked when you build.

The projects do establish two useful design directions: Dinoboy shows how a tightly chosen game and a physical phone-interruption ritual can make one input meaningful, while Salsa ONE shows a low-barrier electronics platform that can be assembled without a custom PCB.
The Bottom Line
A single-button handheld works when the game is designed around timing and clear feedback rather than when a conventional console simply loses its controls. Dinoboy demonstrates the focused, purpose-built version; Salsa ONE provides a practical RP2040 Zero and OLED-based route for making your own.
