The practical difference is what a download changes: custom content (CC) adds or replaces assets such as hair, clothing, furniture, skins, walls, floors, lots, and Sims; a mod (often called a hack) changes game behavior, rules, tuning, autonomy, interactions, careers, or another system. Both are commonly distributed as .package files, so the extension alone cannot tell you which one you have.
The safer way to install either type is to read the creator’s description, verify expansion-pack and dependency requirements, inspect .sims2pack files before installing them, back up your user folder, and test new downloads in a disposable or backed-up neighborhood. A package that appears harmless can conflict with another file, require an expansion you do not own, or carry unwanted content when it is bundled inside a lot or Sim.
What “custom content” and “mod” mean in The Sims 2
Custom content adds or replaces assets
Custom content is player-created material that changes what you can see, build, buy, or select. Typical examples include hairstyles, clothing, makeup, skins, eyes, genetic replacements, furniture, appliances, decorative objects, terrain paint, walls, floors, lots, houses, Sims, and pets. A recolor of an existing chair is still CC because it changes the asset’s appearance rather than the way the chair behaves.
CC can be purely cosmetic, but it can also affect the catalog or build tools. A new door, window, or terrain texture is still generally described as custom content even though it adds a functional object to the game. The deciding question is whether the download primarily supplies an asset or changes the rules that govern the game.

Mods change behavior, rules, or tuning
A mod changes how the game operates. It may add an interaction, alter autonomy, change motives or prices, adjust career behavior, tune pregnancy or aging rules, alter object functions, or introduce a new game system. Many communities also call these files hacks.
Mods may have no obvious preview in a download browser. A small package can alter a global resource used by many objects, which is why a creator’s description, compatibility notes, required files, and load-order instructions matter more than the filename.
The categories overlap
The labels are community shorthand, not technical file classes. A recolor is usually called CC, while a package that changes the recolor’s object behavior is a mod, yet both can have exactly the same .package extension. Some downloads contain an asset plus a tuning change, and creators may label the whole set “CC,” “a mod,” or both. Classify a file by its function and readme rather than by its extension or thumbnail.

Which Sims 2 file types do what?
.package: the normal runtime file
A standalone .package is the normal runtime format for Sims 2 CC and mods. After you extract it from an archive, place it in Documents/EA Games/The Sims 2/Downloads, or the equivalent user-data folder used by your edition. Keep the extension intact. Renaming a package to another extension or leaving it inside a compressed archive prevents the game from reading it.

Subfolders can make a large collection manageable, but follow the creator’s instructions about folder depth and load order. Some older content or specific hacks may not work when nested too deeply, and some mods must load before or after another file. If the readme gives a special location, use it instead of assuming every package belongs in the same subfolder.
.sims2pack: an installer or archive
A .sims2pack is not normally a file you drop into Downloads. It is an installer/archive format used especially for exported Sims, pets, lots, and houses. Open it with the game’s Package Installer or with Sims2Pack Clean Installer so its contents can be unpacked and, when possible, reviewed before installation.
Mod The Sims’ file-type guidance states: “Sims 2 content should be uploaded as package files, except for: Sims and pets, which must be uploaded as .sims2pack files.” That distinction explains why an exported Sim or lot often arrives in a Sims2Pack while ordinary furniture or a hack arrives as one or more packages.
Compressed archives are containers, not game files
Downloads commonly arrive as .zip or .rar archives. Extract the archive first. Put the contained .package files in Downloads, and process any .sims2pack with an installer. Do not place the archive itself in Downloads and expect the game to unpack it.

Body Shop folders matter
Body Shop output must come from the finished SavedSims folder, not the unfinished Projects folder. A package left in Projects may look complete in Body Shop but is not the finished game-ready file. Preserve the .package extension when moving the file so the game can find it.

On Mac editions, EA/Aspyr guidance says a .sims2pack should be processed with Package Installer so it becomes a .package file that can be placed in Downloads. Check which expansion packs your Mac edition actually includes before downloading content; a package made for a different pack set may not work even when its preview looks compatible.
A safe installation workflow
- Back up your user folder. Copy the entire Sims 2 user-data folder to a separate location, with particular attention to
Neighborhoodsand your saves. Keep this backup untouched so you can restore a known-good state. - Read the creator’s page and readme. Record the supported game or edition, required expansion and stuff packs, meshes, CEP or other dependencies, conflicts, load order, and any special installation location. Do not infer requirements from a screenshot or from the filename.
- Extract the download. Open
.zipor.rararchives and inspect the files. Keep the readme and dependency list with your organized download folder. - Install standalone packages. Move the extracted
.packagefiles to Downloads, preserving the extension. Use clear subfolders such asCC/Hair,CC/Objects, andModsonly when the creator’s instructions permit that organization. - Inspect Sims2Packs. Open a
.sims2packwith Sims2Pack Clean Installer when possible. Review the listed packages, deselect hacks, duplicate items, or unrelated CC, and install only what the lot or Sim requires. If the list contains a file you do not recognize, stop and investigate rather than installing the whole bundle. - Enable custom content in the game. Use the game’s custom-content setting, restart when prompted, and confirm that the content dialog appears as expected. A package that is correctly placed but disabled will not show up.
- Test in a disposable neighborhood. Load a backed-up or test neighborhood, check the downloaded object or interaction, and watch for errors, missing meshes, unusual behavior, or crashes before opening your main save.
- Add files in small batches. Keep a simple record of each batch. If a problem appears, you can remove the newest group instead of trying to identify one file from hundreds.
Why compatibility is more complicated than the file extension
Expansion-pack and stuff-pack dependencies
A cloned object can inherit the expansion-pack requirements of the object used as its clone source. A download that looks like a base-game chair, door, or appliance is therefore not guaranteed to work in a base-game installation. The creator should state the required pack set; if that information is missing, treat compatibility as unconfirmed.

A hack may call resources introduced by a particular expansion, rely on a later game behavior, or be written for a specific collection. Installing it without the required pack can produce missing interactions, errors, or instability rather than a simple “not visible” result.

Meshes, recolors, and support files
A recolor normally requires the mesh it recolors. If the mesh is absent, the item may not appear, may display incorrectly, or may produce a missing-content symptom. Some object downloads also require the CEP or another support package. Install every required dependency, not just the recolor file, and keep the files together in an identifiable folder.
Conflicts and overrides
Two packages can edit the same game resource. One may override the other, or the combination may trigger an error. A file that works for one player can fail for another because the other player has a conflicting download, a corrupted package, or a different expansion-pack set. Do not assume that two files are compatible merely because both have worked separately.
Global hacks deserve special caution. They can affect many neighborhoods and objects at once, may need a specific load order, and can become outdated when combined with another behavior-changing package. Follow the creator’s conflict list and remove competing versions before testing.
Edition differences
The Legacy Collection and Mac/Super Collection do not necessarily expose the same packs, paths, or game behavior as older Windows installations. EA states that “It’ll be up to individual Mod creators to ensure Mods work with the new Legacy version.” For that reason, an old package should be treated as unverified on a newer collection unless the creator’s current notes confirm support.

Risks you should understand before installing
Unwanted content inside a Sims2Pack
Existing Downloads content can attach itself to a lot or Sim’s .sims2pack, even when the uploader did not intentionally include it. That bundle can silently install a hack, duplicate package, or unrelated CC. This is the main reason to inspect a Sims2Pack instead of double-clicking through an opaque installation.
Neighborhood and save damage
Improperly packaged Sims on lots can cause major problems for people who download them and can even ruin their whole neighborhood. EA’s Legacy Collection support notes that a corrupted save may require starting fresh because the game cannot repair it. A backup is therefore a prerequisite for experimentation, not merely a recovery convenience.
Corruption and provenance
Archives and installers come from third parties. Prefer established creators, scan archives with your normal security tools, retain the readme and dependency list, and avoid files whose provenance or purpose is unclear. Security scanning cannot establish game compatibility, but it reduces the separate risk of opening an unsafe archive or executable installer.

Missing hair, a flashing object, or an empty catalog entry usually points first to a missing mesh, dependency, or expansion pack. A crash, repeated error dialog, changed autonomy, or an interaction that disappears after adding a package is more consistent with a behavior conflict or outdated hack. Use symptoms to choose the troubleshooting path, but confirm the cause by removing files systematically.
Troubleshooting common installation problems
“My CC works in Body Shop but not in the game”
- Confirm that the finished package is in
SavedSimsor Downloads as instructed, not in the unfinishedProjectsfolder. - Check that the file still ends in
.packageand was not left inside a.zipor.rar. - Verify that custom content is enabled in the game and that you restarted after changing the setting.
- Check for a missing mesh, CEP, required expansion pack, or other dependency.
- Test the item in a clean, backed-up neighborhood to separate a placement issue from a save-specific problem.
“The object is missing or looks wrong”
- Read the creator’s mesh and recolor requirements; install the original mesh if the download is only a recolor.
- Verify that your edition includes the expansion or stuff pack used by the cloned object.
- Look for duplicate versions of the same object and remove older or conflicting packages.
- Check whether the creator requires a particular subfolder or support file.
“The game throws errors or behaves strangely”
- Remove the newest mod batch and test again without saving the affected neighborhood.
- Check the readme for conflicts, load order, and supported editions.
- Use a 50/50 test: divide the suspect files into two groups, test one group, then keep halving the failing group until the offending package is isolated.
- Clear temporary caches as appropriate for your edition, then restart and retest.
- Restore the backed-up neighborhood if the problem appeared after loading or saving it and the cause is not yet known.
“A downloaded lot installed extra files”
- Use Sims2Pack Clean Installer to view the package list before installation.
- Deselect hacks, duplicates, and unrelated CC; install only the lot and files it genuinely needs.
- Keep a record of what was installed so you can remove the exact packages if the lot causes errors.
How to judge a download before you install it
- Function: Is it an appearance/object asset, a behavior-changing hack, or a mixed package?
- Format: Is it a standalone
.package, an archive that must be extracted, or a.sims2packthat needs inspection? - Requirements: Which expansion and stuff packs, meshes, CEP files, libraries, or other dependencies are listed?
- Conflicts: Does the creator name incompatible hacks, older versions, duplicate resources, or a required load order?
- Edition: Is the note specific to your Windows installation, Legacy Collection, Mac/Super Collection, or another pack configuration?
- Provenance: Is there a clear creator, readme, version or update note, and a way to identify the files after extraction?
- Recovery: Have you backed up the user folder and prepared a test neighborhood before adding it?
If any of these answers is missing for a behavior-changing package or a Sims2Pack, postpone installation until you can establish what the file does and how to remove it.
