First confirm your exact phone model has a physical SIM tray and identify its release hole. Insert the supplied SIM-eject tool straight into that hole and press gently toward the phone. Don’t pry at the tray or keep increasing pressure; if a careful attempt does not release it, stop and contact the manufacturer, carrier, or an authorized repair provider.
Check that you have a physical SIM tray
Tray locations and designs vary by phone, and some models or regional versions use eSIM without a physical SIM tray. Look up the exact model in its manufacturer’s support documentation before inserting a tool. On iPhones, Apple’s SIM-card guide shows tray locations by model and explains that physical-SIM availability varies by model and market.
Make sure the opening you have identified is the tray’s release hole, not another opening on the phone. HONOR specifically warns that users can mistake a microphone opening for the tray hole. If you cannot confidently identify the correct hole, consult the phone’s manual or manufacturer support rather than testing nearby openings.
Use the tool with straight, controlled pressure
- Choose the right tool. Use the eject tool supplied with the phone if you have it. Apple says a paper clip can be used if the tool is missing; use a small, sturdy one carefully. Avoid toothpicks and other breakable objects, which may snap inside the opening. See Apple’s instructions and HONOR’s warning about fragile objects.
- Align it with the release hole. Hold the tool straight and insert it into the hole associated with the tray. HONOR recommends vertical insertion and warns against tilting the tool.
- Press inward gently. Push toward the phone with controlled pressure. Apple says not to force the tool; Xiaomi’s guidance for the POCO X6 Pro calls for moderate pressure, but that model-specific advice is not a reason to apply more force to other phones.
- Stop if it does not release. Do not angle the tool to hook the tray, lever against its edge, or pull on the tray. A tray that remains stuck after a careful attempt needs assessment, not escalating force.
Why a SIM tray may not eject
Without the phone model or an inspection, the cause cannot be identified from the symptom alone. These are possibilities, not a diagnosis:

- Wrong opening: The tool may be in a nearby opening rather than the tray release.
- Misalignment: A tilted tool may not engage the release correctly and can apply force in the wrong direction.
- Damage or a mismatched tray: Forceful removal can damage a tray or its mechanism. Apple also says to use only the SIM tray that came with the device because trays from different models may not fit.
- An obstructed slot or nonstandard SIM: HTC warns that a thicker-than-standard SIM may get stuck and that the tray should not be obstructed during removal.
- No physical tray on that version: Some phone models and regional variants use eSIM only.
For model-specific cautions, see HONOR’s guidance on a damaged SIM-card slot, Apple’s tray instructions, and HTC’s HTC U20 5G instructions. These examples apply to the named manufacturers and models, not universally.

If the correct tool, correct hole, and straight, careful pressure do not release the tray, contact the phone manufacturer, your carrier, or an authorized service provider for your model and region. Apple directs people with a difficult-to-eject tray to their network provider or an Apple Store; HONOR advises using an authorized customer service center if its steps fail. If maintenance is needed, HONOR recommends backing up important data beforehand when possible.
