Silver Pines is a single-player survival-horror Metroidvania in which private investigator Red Walker searches an almost-abandoned town for missing musician Eddie Velvet. Learn the movement and combat controls first, then treat every locked door, dark room, cracked wall, tarp, and barricade as a note to revisit. The safest progress comes from reading environmental clues, recording blocked routes, and spending ammunition only when it buys a safer path.
What Silver Pines asks you to do
Wych Elm Games developed Silver Pines and Team17 published it. The Steam listing gives an October 8, 2026 release date and lists PC, controller, and Steam Deck support. It is built around two pressures: survival-horror scarcity and Metroidvania-style access. You explore a connected town, find clues and supplies, and acquire tools or weapons that open places you could not reach earlier.
That structure changes how you should read the environment. A locked door is rarely a dead end; it is usually a future destination. A dark room may be waiting for a torch, a cracked wall for a sledgehammer, a tarp for a box cutter, or a wooden barricade for a shotgun. The objective is not to clear every room immediately. It is to build a mental and map-based list of useful return trips while staying alive and keeping enough inventory capacity for the next key item.
The Steam page captured in 2026 displayed 97% positive ratings from 1,106 English reviews. Store ratings can change, so use that figure only as a snapshot of the listing at that time.

Default controls you should learn first
The following keyboard-and-mouse layout is the default documented in a Neoseeker walkthrough. Rebind keys in Settings if the layout is uncomfortable. Steam lists full controller support, and an on-screen prompt plus your selected layout takes precedence if a patch changes a binding.

Movement, sprinting, and dodging
Practice changing direction while moving before you enter a dangerous building. Sprint is most useful for crossing an exposed stretch or reaching a doorway, not for every corridor. Hold Shift only when speed has a purpose, because running can carry you past an interact prompt, into an enemy, or away from a position where you intended to examine a clue.
Use Spacebar deliberately rather than treating dodge as a panic button. A dodge is for avoiding a committed attack or clearing an obstacle; triggering it too early can leave you out of position for the next strike. Crouch with Ctrl when you need a lower profile or a careful approach, then stand before interacting if the prompt does not appear.

Interaction and combat rhythm
Press E whenever an object looks deliberately placed: notes, signs, doors, containers, mechanisms, and unusual scenery can all matter. In a fight, aim with the right mouse button, fire with the left, and reload with R. Reloading is not an automatic background action; the walkthrough describes reload quick-time prompts, so watch the screen and complete them instead of assuming the magazine has filled.

Before committing to a shot, decide whether the enemy blocks the route or whether you can pass, hide, or take another path. The game is designed around fighting or avoiding horrors, not around defeating everything you see.
A reliable first-room routine
Use the same short routine whenever you enter a new area. Consistency prevents the two most common beginner mistakes: leaving a clue behind and reaching a locked route without the space or supplies to deal with it.
- Read the objective. Identify the nearest lead that advances the current task rather than wandering toward every visible landmark.
- Check your loadout. Look at ammunition, healing items, equipped weapon, and free inventory slots before crossing a threshold.
- Inspect before moving on. Read notes, clippings, signs, and documents; examine suspicious objects from more than one angle.
- Record blocked progress. Photograph a locked door or odd object when the game offers that option, or leave a map reminder so the location is not dependent on memory.
- Choose the safest route. If a threat can be bypassed, compare the risk of a fight with the value of the room and the cost of your supplies.
- Recheck shortcuts. When a tool opens a passage, look at the map before setting out again so the next trip uses the shorter route.
This routine turns exploration into a series of decisions instead of aimless backtracking. It also keeps a newly discovered key item from being crowded out by disposable objects.

Silver Pines uses access gates in the Metroidvania sense: progress depends on obtaining something that changes what you can do, then returning to places that were previously impossible. The publisher specifically describes locked doors and hidden paths as part of progression. A barrier is therefore information about the future, not proof that you missed a random switch.

These are examples reported in review coverage, not a promise that every obstacle has only one solution. Look for the visual language of the obstruction and for a newly acquired item that plausibly changes it. A tool’s usefulness is measured by the route it opens as well as by its combat value.
Photographing and marking return points
A review of the game notes that photographing a locked door or odd object pins a reminder to the map. Use that feature immediately when you cannot pass. The image gives you a visual reference, while the map marker lets you plan a route after you acquire a new item.
Group return points mentally by the type of obstacle: light, cutting, smashing, or firearm access. When you obtain a matching tool, revisit only the plausible group instead of retracing every street. After opening one, check whether it creates a shortcut; a newly opened route can make a distant objective much safer than the path you used on the first visit.
Choosing between a fight, a dodge, and a detour
Scarcity is a central design pressure. Team17’s announcement describes scavenging for resources and solutions while fighting or avoiding the town’s horrors, and Steam tags the game with Survival Horror and Inventory Management. That combination means an encounter is a resource question, not merely an aiming test.

Spend ammunition when it creates a safe route or removes a serious threat. If a creature can be bypassed, first inspect the room layout, check for another exit, and reposition before deciding that a gun is required. Keep a healing item available before entering a likely combat space; a full magazine is less useful if one mistake leaves you unable to recover.
Inventory management without guesswork
Inventory space is part of the puzzle. Keep key components and likely puzzle items organized, but do not carry every object indefinitely. Before approaching a room with a mechanism, leave enough free capacity for a key item; being forced to abandon something at the moment of discovery can turn a solved puzzle into another backtrack.
Utility and footprint can pull in opposite directions. GamesRadar highlights the more versatile but larger crowbar alongside the smaller box cutter. The crowbar may justify its space when several interactions are likely, while the box cutter is easier to carry when you are moving through a compact route and know exactly what it opens. The right choice depends on the next objective, not on a universal tier list.

- Carry the weapon that matches the threats you actually expect to face.
- Keep at least one open slot before entering a clue-dense or objective-marked location.
- Use a safe opportunity to reorganize rather than discarding a component during an encounter.
- When a tool has multiple uses, compare the value of its next possible opening with the space it occupies.
Puzzle solving: inspect first, interpret second
Silver Pines usually places the answer in the environment instead of asking you to brute-force a combination. Creative Bloq reports clues such as a newspaper clipping, a number printed on a framed baseball jersey, or a detail visible through a shop window. The intended “aha” moment comes from connecting a visible fact to a nearby mechanism.

A clue-first sequence
- Read everything nearby. Check notes, clippings, signs, labels, and documents before touching the lock or symbol panel.
- Examine physical objects. Rotate your view and compare numbers, colors, shapes, and repeated symbols.
- Search the same route. The answer may be visible through a window, on a wall, or on an object you passed without interacting with.
- Translate the clue minimally. Try the smallest interpretation that fits the mechanism instead of cycling through every possible combination.
- Test and verify. If the mechanism accepts the input, note what the clue-to-action relationship was so a later puzzle does not look unrelated.
Do not assume a code copied from another player will work in your game. The Crimson Bear Motel gate code is reported to change with every save. When a familiar solution fails, reread the local clue and verify that you are not using a value from a different save file.
When a puzzle appears to have no clue
Return to the last room and inspect at a slower pace. Check high and low surfaces, framed objects, windows, and text that only becomes meaningful when compared with the mechanism. Look for a number that is part of the scenery rather than a glowing “code” prompt. If the object still seems inert, leave a map reminder and continue the main route; a required tool or a new viewpoint may be what makes the clue readable later.
What to do when you are stuck at a locked door
- Identify the obstruction. Is it darkness, a crack, fabric, wood, a conventional lock, or an object that looks interactive?
- Check your current tools. Compare the visual problem with the torch, sledgehammer, box cutter, shotgun, or other recently obtained item.
- Look for a second path. Metroidvania areas often provide a route around the barrier before the intended return.
- Photograph or mark the spot. Do this before leaving so the door becomes a planned objective.
- Advance the nearest objective. Search the accessible rooms for the next tool or clue rather than repeatedly trying the same lock.
If the door has no obvious physical weakness and no matching item is in your inventory, stop spending resources on it. The correct answer is usually progression elsewhere, followed by a deliberate return.
Platform and control considerations
PC players can use the documented keyboard-and-mouse defaults or change them in Settings. Controller players should follow the prompts shown by their selected layout; the Steam listing identifies full controller support. Steam Deck is also listed as a supported platform, so expect the same exploration and inventory decisions even though the physical buttons differ.
Regardless of platform, test dodge, crouch, interact, aim, fire, and reload in a safe area before committing to a long route. A familiar prompt is more valuable than memorizing a diagram when your layout, accessibility settings, or a later update changes the displayed binding.
A practical first-run mindset
Play Silver Pines as a loop of observation, access, and conservation. Observe the room until you understand its clue and threat layout. Use the tool or weapon that changes access, then return to the locations you deliberately recorded. Conserve ammunition and inventory space so the next discovery is useful rather than inconvenient. When a puzzle resists brute force, assume the environment is communicating something you have not yet noticed; when a fight looks optional, compare its reward with the supplies it consumes.
With that approach, the town’s locked routes become a navigable checklist, environmental details become solutions instead of decoration, and every combat decision supports the larger goal: finding Eddie Velvet without exhausting the resources needed to reach the next part of Silver Pines.
