Silver Peak SD-WAN is the legacy name and product lineage of the enterprise networking solution now marketed by HPE Aruba Networking as EdgeConnect SD-WAN. Aruba acquired Silver Peak in 2020. Today, the solution brings together EdgeConnect appliances, Orchestrator management software, optional Aruba Boost WAN optimization, and Advanced Security features.
What is Silver Peak SD-WAN?
SD-WAN is a software-managed wide area network: administrators set policies centrally, and the network uses them to manage and route enterprise traffic across WAN connections. In the Silver Peak product lineage, EdgeConnect appliances provide the network edge while Orchestrator manages policies and the wider SD-WAN fabric. HPE Aruba Networking describes Orchestrator as “the brains of the EdgeConnect Enterprise platform.” HPE Aruba Networking: About EdgeConnect SD-WAN
The name change matters when looking up product documentation or evaluating an existing installation: current materials use EdgeConnect SD-WAN, while older references may say Silver Peak. Aruba’s acquisition announcement and product documentation establish that lineage. HPE Aruba Networking: EdgeConnect API documentation and Orchestrator 9.3 changes
What are the main components?
| Component | Role |
|---|---|
| Orchestrator | Central management for the SD-WAN fabric, including business-intent policies. It can provide a fabric-wide view of topology, overlays, and application policies. |
| EdgeConnect appliances | Physical or virtual edge gateways that provide routing, SD-WAN functions, application visibility and control, and security services. |
| Business Intent Overlays | Policy constructs for steering enterprise traffic according to application and business requirements. |
| Aruba Boost | An optional performance pack for selected workloads, including latency-sensitive applications and reducing repeated data transmission. |
| Advanced Security | A named part of the current solution; the available material does not establish a complete feature list, so specific capabilities should be checked in current product documentation. |
These roles and capabilities are described in HPE Aruba Networking materials, including its EdgeConnect FIPS Level 1 User Guidance and EdgeConnect overview. Product configuration, licensing, and deployment determine which capabilities apply.

What can EdgeConnect SD-WAN do?
Apply centralized policies to application traffic
Orchestrator lets administrators assign business-intent policies across the WAN. Those policies can guide how traffic is handled and steered over the fabric. This describes the platform’s policy model, not a guarantee that every application will achieve a particular speed or service level.
Use multiple WAN transports
HPE describes the platform as supporting application performance across combinations of transport services. The design intent is to align overlays and traffic handling with application needs and available network resources; results depend on the particular network and configuration.

Provide visibility and operational controls
EdgeConnect appliances provide application visibility and control. Orchestrator and its APIs support network management, monitoring, configuration, and automation. HPE distinguishes appliance-level integrations, which expose device-specific information, from Orchestrator-level integrations, which can present the fabric, topology, overlays, and application policies. See HPE’s integration points overview and Orchestrator-level integration documentation.

- 【Flexible Port Configuration】1 Gigabit SFP WAN Port + 1 Gigabit WAN Port + 2 Gigabit WAN/LAN Ports plus1 Gigabit LAN Port. Up to four WAN ports optimize bandwidth usage through one device.
- 【Increased Network Capacity】Maximum number of associated client devices – 150,000. Maximum number of clients – Up to 700.
- 【Integrated into Omada SDN】Omada’s Software Defined Networking (SDN) platform integrates network devices including gateways, access points & switches with multiple control options offered – Omada Hardware controller, Omada Software Controller or Omada cloud-based controller(Contact TP-Link for Cloud-Based Controller Plan Details). Standalone mode also applies.
- 【Cloud Access】Remote Cloud access and Omada app brings centralized cloud management of the whole network from different sites—all controlled from a single interface anywhere, anytime.
- 【SDN Compatibility】For SDN usage, make sure your devices/controllers are either equipped with or can be upgraded to SDN version. SDN controllers work only with SDN Gateways, Access Points & Switches. Non-SDN controllers work only with non-SDN APs. For devices that are compatible with SDN firmware, please visit TP-Link website.
Add WAN optimization where appropriate
Aruba Boost is optional, rather than a requirement for every SD-WAN deployment. HPE describes it as a way to address selected application performance needs, including latency-sensitive workloads and repetitive-data reduction. Whether it is useful depends on the applications and traffic patterns involved.
What should administrators know about APIs and monitoring?
Review integrations before an Orchestrator 9.3 upgrade
HPE says Orchestrator release 9.3 changed REST API endpoint definitions and that the changes are not backward compatible with pre-9.3 endpoints. Before upgrading, administrators should review scripts, third-party tools, and internal applications that call those APIs. HPE’s Orchestrator API change notes describe the version change.

- 【VPN CASCADING AT EASE】Surpassing the mediocre performance of most VPN routers for home usage, the Beryl AX is capable of hosting a VPN server and VPN client at the same time within the same device, enabling users to remote access local network resources like Wi-Fi printers or local web servers, and accessing the public internet as a VPN client simultaneously.
Choose an appropriate way to collect statistics
HPE documentation says EdgeConnect produces statistics every minute. It contrasts this with a general industry collection interval of five minutes; that comparison is HPE’s characterization, not an independently verified industry benchmark. HPE also cautions against using Orchestrator’s REST API for high-frequency polling of granular statistics or external data replication: request volume grows with appliance count and data granularity and can strain Orchestrator resources. Aruba’s discussion of statistics intervals and HPE’s statistics collection guidance provide details.

What should you verify when evaluating it?
- Deployment form: determine whether your design calls for physical appliances, virtual appliances, or both.
- Policies and transports: map application requirements to the WAN transports and traffic-steering policies you intend to use.
- Security scope: confirm the security and segmentation features included for the proposed configuration and licensing.
- Integrations: identify API consumers and validate compatibility with the Orchestrator version you plan to operate.
- Optimization: assess whether Boost addresses a real workload need rather than assuming it is necessary.
- Lifecycle and operating requirements: confirm current hardware availability, support lifecycle, licensing, and deployment requirements with HPE or an authorized source; these vary and are not established by the product descriptions alone.
The documented functions are vendor-described capabilities. They do not, by themselves, establish a universal cost saving, uptime improvement, application speedup, or advantage over a competing SD-WAN product. Those outcomes require evaluation against the organization’s own traffic, network design, and operating requirements.
