You can play either SILENT HILL: Townfall or the SILENT HILL 2 remake first. KONAMI’s published descriptions do not state that one requires prior knowledge of the other, so choose by the story and perspective that appeal to you: Townfall follows Simon Ordell in a first-person game, while the remake follows James Sunderland from an over-the-shoulder perspective.
Do you need to play Silent Hill 2 before Townfall?
No required order is stated in the official material reviewed. The two descriptions introduce different protagonists and premises, but that alone does not establish whether their stories are connected. Treat them as separate entry points unless you have a specific reason to play one first; there is no publisher-stated prerequisite.

How their gameplay descriptions differ
Townfall
KONAMI describes hiding and evading threats, life-or-death combat, and puzzles closely tied to the narrative. Simon also uses a CRTV pocket television. Those details point to a first-person approach to its story and encounters, but they do not establish how the game compares in quality or challenge to the remake.

Silent Hill 2 remake
KONAMI says the remake adds expanded explorable areas, revamped combat, and new cut-scenes. Its over-the-shoulder camera is the clearest presentation difference from Townfall’s first-person design.

What the sales figures do—and do not—tell you
KONAMI reported that the Silent Hill 2 remake had surpassed 2 million combined physical and digital units on January 29, 2025. That is a dated figure, not a current lifetime total. Its October 17, 2024 announcement separately reported 1 million combined physical retail and digital copies in less than one week, counting sales through October 11. Neither figure says which game is the better starting point.
KONAMI’s Townfall release-day announcement also reported 17.8 million copies for the franchise worldwide as of the end of June 2026, counting units shipped, store downloads, and subscription services. That is a franchise-wide total, not Townfall sales.
