Silent Hill: Townfall and the Silent Hill 2 remake use psychological horror, exploration, puzzles and combat, but they are different games rather than two versions of the same story. Townfall is a first-person horror game set in the fictional Scottish island town of St. Amelia in 1996, where Simon Ordell uses a pocket CRTV to tune unstable signals. Silent Hill 2 is an over-the-shoulder remake of the 2001 game, following James Sunderland as he searches the town of Silent Hill after receiving a letter from his dead wife, Mary.
The practical choice is about the experience you want: Townfall emphasizes a new setting, first-person immersion and the CRTV mechanic; Silent Hill 2 reimagines James’s established story with a third-person camera and the series’ radio-based warning system. Official descriptions do not establish an objective winner, comparative difficulty score or independent consensus on which is scarier.

What Silent Hill: Townfall is
Townfall is a new Silent Hill story rather than a remake of an earlier numbered entry. Its opening premise places Simon Ordell, an outsider, on the isolated island settlement of St. Amelia after he washes ashore. The location is fictional, but its cultural and geographic frame is Scotland, and the story is set in 1996. That gives Townfall a defined place and period separate from the familiar town that gives the series its name. Konami’s official overview identifies Simon, St. Amelia and the Scottish setting.

Those credits describe who made and released Townfall; they do not, by themselves, establish how its quality compares with any other Silent Hill game. The useful distinction for players is that Townfall offers a new protagonist, a new community and a new set of rules for reading the horror rather than retelling James Sunderland’s journey.

- Experienced entirely in first person, Simon must explore, evade, and survive using a limited set of weapons and tools, including the CRTV, a pocket television used to tune into unstable signals. What the Silent Hill 2 remake is
The Silent Hill 2 release is a remake of the 2001 game, not the original product under a new name. It follows James Sunderland, who travels to Silent Hill after receiving a mysterious letter from Mary, his wife who has long been dead. The official announcement presents that premise as the foundation for the remake. Konami’s announcement
The remake is developed by Bloober Team, with Akira Yamaoka returning as composer and Masahiro Ito involved as artist. Its camera sits over James’s shoulder, giving the player a closer, controllable view of his movement and encounters while preserving the series’ intended sense of dread. The cited PlayStation interview explains that the perspective was selected to provide more control without abandoning tension. PlayStation’s developer interview

How the camera changes the experience
Townfall’s first-person viewpoint
Townfall is presented entirely from the player character’s eyes. Konami calls it the first full-length Silent Hill game to use a first-person presentation throughout. You do not watch Simon from behind or see his full body while walking through St. Amelia; the environment arrives as a direct field of view. Konami’s overview
This choice is tightly connected to the CRTV. Jon McKellan, writer and director at Screen Burn Interactive, said the first-person foundation was indispensable because the CRTV’s mechanics could not work from another perspective: "For Silent Hill: Townfall, a first-person viewpoint was an indispensable foundation for integrating the mechanics around the CRTV device. Honestly, the CRTV couldn’t work from any other perspective." PlayStation interview with the developers
For a player, the result is a viewpoint built around inspecting what Simon can see and using an in-world device from that position. The first-person camera is therefore more than a cosmetic switch: it is part of how Townfall delivers information and how its signature tool is operated.

- Day One Edition Bonus: CRTV Style: Rusted, CRTV Style: Beach Edition
- When Simon Ordell is called back to the island of St. Amelia to "put things in order", he meets a city lying quietly in dense fog, seemingly abandoned, yet anything but dormant
- After venturing further to understand his connection to this place and its inhabitants, he gradually discovers fragments of the past rising to the surface
- Simon must explore, evade and survive from a first-person perspective. It uses a limited arsenal of weapons and tools, including the CRTV: a portable TV to receive unstable signals
- The dodging is tension, the battles are hectic and the story-based puzzles reveal a truth that does not want to remain hidden
Silent Hill 2’s over-the-shoulder camera
The remake keeps James visible in an over-the-shoulder perspective. You can read his posture and movement while still looking into the space ahead, a framing that supports deliberate exploration and combat. The camera is not the same as the fixed or more distant viewpoints associated with older survival-horror design, and it is not Townfall’s direct first-person view.
The two approaches create different kinds of orientation. Townfall asks you to read threats and spaces from Simon’s eye line, while Silent Hill 2 continually places James between you and the environment. Neither description proves that one camera is more frightening or more difficult; those are evaluations that require independent play testing rather than marketing specifications.
CRTV versus radio: the defining devices
What Townfall’s CRTV does
The CRTV is a fictional pocket television carried as part of Townfall’s gameplay. It tunes into unstable signals, and developers describe it as serving both narrative presentation and active play. In particular, the device can be involved in stealth, so it is not merely a screen for watching story scenes. Konami’s product page
The developers frame the CRTV as an evolution of Silent Hill’s radio idea. Instead of only warning that something may be close, it is designed as a device Simon actively uses to engage with signals and the world around him. The exact fictional behavior belongs to the game; it is not a real consumer television, accessory or product that can be purchased separately.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Because the CRTV is designed around unstable transmissions, players should expect information to be mediated through tuning and interpretation rather than delivered as a simple objective marker. That is a description of its stated design role, not a promise that every signal has one mechanically correct solution.
What Silent Hill 2’s radio does
James’s radio remains an audio-warning device. It creates tension and gives sound cues that help players judge whether something may be nearby. The radio therefore supports awareness without replacing exploration: you still have to interpret the environment and decide how to proceed. The PlayStation interview
The devices produce different relationships with information. Townfall makes a portable television central to its first-person interaction model; Silent Hill 2 uses radio noise and cues as an atmospheric aid during James’s journey. The sources do not say that either game requires a particular headset or other special audio hardware.
Story, protagonist and setting differences
Simon Ordell and St. Amelia
Simon Ordell is introduced as an outsider who washes ashore at St. Amelia, a remote island town off Scotland. The 1996 date and the island’s isolation establish Townfall’s historical and geographic frame. The town is fictional, so references to St. Amelia should not be read as a real Scottish destination. Konami’s product information
This premise changes the kind of mystery the player is entering. Simon is not returning to a known personal destination; he arrives as someone cut off from ordinary context and must make sense of the place through its signals, spaces and inhabitants. The official descriptions establish that setup but do not disclose every plot turn, so the comparison should not invent character relationships or endings.
James Sunderland and Silent Hill
James begins with a specific emotional trigger: a letter from Mary, his dead wife, that draws him to Silent Hill. His search is therefore both geographic and personal. The remake preserves that central premise while rebuilding the presentation for modern hardware and a controllable over-the-shoulder camera. Konami’s remake announcement
The official material does not state the exact year in which the remake’s story occurs. Use the town’s name and James’s situation as the established identifiers rather than attaching an unsupported date.
Exploration and information flow
Townfall’s exploration is organized around first-person observation and the CRTV’s unstable signals. The device can carry narrative material while also affecting play, including stealth. This combination suggests that looking, listening and choosing when to expose yourself are connected activities rather than isolated systems. The developers’ public description supports that relationship, but it does not provide a complete map, puzzle list or encounter-by-encounter walkthrough.

The camera gives a continuous view of James as he enters spaces, examines surroundings and confronts threats. The radio helps establish proximity through audio rather than through a visual detection meter. These are system descriptions, not measurements of which game has more exploration content.
Puzzles, combat and encounters
Townfall’s flexible encounters
Konami describes hiding from threats, combat and puzzles as closely intertwined with Townfall’s story. Developers also say players can try different approaches during encounters. Jon McKellan summarized that intention this way: "Rather than forcing a single playstyle, we want players to experiment and discover which approach feels most effective or suitable for each situation as they fight to survive." PlayStation interview with Screen Burn Interactive

- Myths i legendy opowiadane w stylizowanym, dziwnym wszechświecie dzikiego zachodu

In practical terms, that means the game is presented as allowing experimentation between avoidance, concealment and direct confrontation where the situation supports it. The statement does not guarantee that every encounter has unlimited solutions, nor does it establish a comparative difficulty rating.
Silent Hill 2’s revised puzzles and combat
The remake retains combat but revises some of the original game’s puzzles. Bloober Team also describes adding new locations and changing where certain events take place while preserving the characters’ arcs and the impact of the story. PlayStation’s interview with the remake team
That distinction matters if you know the 2001 game. The remake is intended to be recognizable in narrative structure and character focus, yet it is not a promise that every puzzle solution, room layout or event location is identical. Players approaching it as a first Silent Hill 2 experience should treat it as a rebuilt version; returning players should expect familiar story beats alongside altered spaces and challenges.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Development approach and what it means for comparison
Townfall and Silent Hill 2 come from different development teams and therefore start from different creative positions. Townfall is made by Screen Burn Interactive, a Scottish studio creating a new island setting and a first-person CRTV-centered structure. Silent Hill 2 is Bloober Team’s remake of an existing 2001 story, with series veterans Akira Yamaoka and Masahiro Ito involved.
Motoi Okamoto, Silent Hill series producer at Konami, described the process of building a game’s internal guidance without simply copying an old formula: "While Konami does have an internal ‘bible’ or storyline guidelines, I believe the most crucial part of the process is for the developers and writers themselves to analyze the Silent Hill series and build their own bible." PlayStation interview
That comment helps explain why shared franchise elements do not make the games interchangeable. Both can use psychological horror and environmental uncertainty while expressing those ideas through different characters, cameras, devices and locations.

Which game should you choose?
Choose Townfall when the design priorities fit
- You want a completely first-person Silent Hill experience.
- You are interested in a new protagonist, a Scottish island setting and a story set in 1996.
- You want the CRTV to be an active tool for signals, narrative presentation and stealth-related play.
- You prefer encounters described by the developers as allowing experimentation among different approaches.
These are preference matches, not claims that Townfall is superior. The official material establishes the features; it does not provide an independent quality ranking.
Choose Silent Hill 2 when its remake structure fits
- You want James Sunderland’s search for Mary at the center of the story.
- You prefer an over-the-shoulder camera that keeps the protagonist visible.
- You want the radio’s audio cues to remain part of threat awareness.
- You are interested in a remake that revises puzzles and some locations while preserving the established character arcs and story impact.
This option is also suitable for readers who specifically want a reimagining of the 2001 game rather than a new setting and cast.

What the available evidence does not establish
No independent comparative review consensus, game-specific sales figure or measured comparison of difficulty was established in the official-source material used for this article. It would therefore be misleading to state that one title is definitively scarier, longer, harder or better. Those judgments require firsthand play and a defined test method.
Konami has reported more than 17.8 million Silent Hill series copies worldwide as of the end of June 2026, counting units shipped, store downloads and subscription services. That is a franchise-wide figure, not sales for Townfall or the Silent Hill 2 remake individually. Konami’s 2026 announcement
Bottom line for the comparison
Townfall is the choice for a new first-person story in St. Amelia, Scotland, where Simon Ordell uses the CRTV to interpret unstable signals and navigate threats. Silent Hill 2 is the choice for James Sunderland’s reworked journey in Silent Hill, viewed over his shoulder and accompanied by radio warnings. Their shared psychological-horror identity explains the comparison, but their protagonists, settings, cameras, signature devices and encounter structures make them distinct games. Select between them according to those design differences, then confirm the current platform listing for your region.
