You do not need to play one before the other. Silent Hill: Townfall is described by Steam as a self-contained psychological-horror story, so it can be your first game. Choose it if you want a first-person adventure on the Scottish island of St. Amelia, a portable CRTV that turns unstable broadcasts into clues, and flexible choices between stealth, evasion and combat. Choose the Silent Hill 2 remake if you want James Sunderland’s story, an over-the-shoulder camera and a more traditional survival-horror structure built around exploration, puzzles and desperate fights.
Do you have to play Silent Hill 2 before Townfall?
No required order has been established. The official material reviewed for Townfall calls it a self-contained psychological-horror game. Nothing in the cited announcements requires knowledge of Silent Hill 2, and no official source establishes a direct story-continuity dependency between the two games.

That makes the decision about format and premise rather than chronology. Starting with Townfall will not leave you missing a prerequisite chapter of James Sunderland’s story. Starting with the Silent Hill 2 remake likewise does not function as a required tutorial for Townfall. They present different protagonists, settings and core play systems.
What is different about each game?

Choose Townfall if you want first-person investigation and flexible encounters
A self-contained story with a new protagonist
Townfall follows Simon Ordell on St. Amelia, a Scottish island, rather than revisiting James Sunderland’s narrative. Steam describes the game as a self-contained psychological-horror story set in Scotland in 1996. That wording is the clearest reason a newcomer can begin here: the game is presented as its own entry point, not as a sequel that assumes a completed Silent Hill 2.
The camera changes how you read the horror
Townfall is the series’ first full-length first-person game. A first-person viewpoint places environmental inspection, sightlines and close-range threats directly in front of you. It also creates a different relationship with the protagonist: you investigate through Simon’s immediate field of view instead of watching him from behind.
The CRTV is the central puzzle tool
Instead of treating a conventional radio as the defining signal device, Townfall gives Simon a portable CRTV. The device picks up unstable analog signals, and those transmissions provide clues that connect to narrative puzzles. Writer and director Jon McKellan of Screen Burn Interactive told PlayStation.Blog on July 30, 2026 that the idea of changing the radio to a CRTV existed from the very start of development.

That does not mean every puzzle is a television mini-game. The documented description is narrower: the CRTV investigates signals and feeds clues into story-linked puzzles. Expect the device to be part of how the story communicates information, rather than merely an optional collectible or cosmetic prop.
You can decide how to handle encounters
The official Steam description covers stealth, evasion and combat, including melee and firearms. Developer comments say players can experiment with how they deal with encounters. In practical terms, the design supports more than a single “fight everything” route: avoiding a threat, slipping past it or engaging it are all part of the stated toolbox. The available information does not promise that every confrontation can be skipped, so treat flexibility as an encounter approach rather than a universal pacifist mode.
Choose the Silent Hill 2 remake if you want James’s story and over-the-shoulder survival horror
A focused character-driven premise
The remake follows James Sunderland after he receives a letter from Mary, his long-dead wife, and goes to Silent Hill. That premise is the entry point for the remake’s exploration, puzzles and psychological horror. If the question you most want answered is why James would search for someone he believes is dead, this is the game built around that mystery.

An over-the-shoulder perspective
PlayStation’s developer article describes an over-the-shoulder camera and keeps James and Maria central to the presentation. You see James move through spaces rather than occupying his eyes, which makes his posture, reactions and position in a room part of the visual information. The camera also supports the remake’s expanded combat presentation without turning James into an action hero.

Combat is deliberately unsafe
The remake offers expanded combat options, but the same PlayStation discussion characterizes James’s fights as a desperate struggle. He remains vulnerable and may need to run. This distinction matters when choosing between the games: more weapons or attacks do not make Silent Hill 2 a power fantasy. Resource awareness, positioning and knowing when to escape remain part of the survival-horror loop.
Mateusz Lenart, Bloober Team’s creative director and lead designer, described the project on PlayStation.Blog on May 30, 2024 as “a remake with respect toward the original.” That statement identifies the remake’s aim, but it is not a guarantee that every scene, control or encounter is identical to the earlier release.
Rank #4
- This is Korean Version released in Korea. Region free title so you can play it on your System.
- Korean Edition supports Multi language Subtitles: English, Japanese, Chinese, Korean
- Having received a letter from his deceased wife, James heads to where they shared so many memories, in the hope of seeing her one more time: SILENT HILL. There, by the lake, he finds a woman eerily similar to her... "My name...is Maria," the woman smiles. Her face, her voice... She's just like her. Experience a master class in psychological survival horror―lauded as the best in the series―on the latest hardware with chilling visuals and visceral sounds.
Which game should a first-time player start with?
Use your preferred format as the tie-breaker. There is no sourced order requirement, so the following sequence is a decision guide rather than a recommended chronology.
- Pick the viewpoint you want. Select Townfall for first-person play. Select the Silent Hill 2 remake for an over-the-shoulder camera.
- Pick the premise that interests you. Choose Simon Ordell, St. Amelia and a 1996 Scottish setting for Townfall. Choose James Sunderland’s search prompted by Mary’s letter for the remake.
- Pick the interaction you expect to use most. The CRTV, unstable signals and narrative puzzles define Townfall’s documented hook. The remake centers exploration, puzzles, James’s radio and survival combat.
- Decide how much encounter choice you want. Townfall explicitly presents stealth, evasion, melee and firearms as available approaches. The remake gives James expanded combat options but emphasizes vulnerability and retreat.
- Check the platform you actually own. Townfall is listed for PS5, Steam and Epic Games Store. The Silent Hill 2 announcement names PS5 and PC Steam. Storefront availability can differ by country and can change after release.
Release dates, platforms and availability
Townfall’s date has a one-day source discrepancy
Konami’s US announcement says Silent Hill: Townfall released on September 24, 2026 for PS5, Steam and Epic Games Store. The Steam storefront separately displays September 23, 2026. The safest interpretation is that the two dates reflect different announcement or storefront timing, potentially by region. If you need the exact local launch date, use the date shown for your account’s storefront rather than treating either date as universal.
The Steam listing identifies Screen Burn as developer and Konami and Annapurna Interactive as publishers. It describes the game as a self-contained psychological-horror experience set in Scotland in 1996.

Silent Hill 2 remake platforms and launch date
Konami’s announcement names PS5 and PC through Steam for the Silent Hill 2 remake. PlayStation announced October 8, 2024 as its release date. Those sources establish the named platforms and date, but they do not verify current retailer stock, disc formats or every regional storefront listing. Check the live store page in your country before purchasing.
What the sales figure does and does not mean
Konami said the Silent Hill series had sold more than 17.8 million copies worldwide as of the end of June 2026. The company’s note says that total includes units shipped, store downloads and subscription services. It should therefore be read as a combined series-distribution figure, not as physical copies sold alone and not as a sales total for either of these individual games.
Can you play both without losing the intended experience?
Yes. Because Townfall is presented as self-contained and no official source establishes a mandatory sequence or direct continuity link, playing both is a matter of preference. You might start with the game whose camera and premise appeal to you, then use the other as a contrast: first-person signal investigation versus an over-the-shoulder search through Silent Hill.

Common pitfalls before you buy
- Assuming “Townfall” is a direct continuation. The available description calls it self-contained; no required connection to the remake has been established.
- Assuming first-person means action-focused. The documented encounter options include stealth and evasion as well as melee and firearms.
- Assuming the remake removes survival pressure. Its combat is expanded, but James is still described as vulnerable and may need to run.
- Treating the release dates as identical worldwide. Konami’s US announcement says September 24, 2026, while Steam displays September 23, 2026.
- Reading the 17.8-million figure as a single-game or physical-sales total. Konami’s number covers the series and includes shipments, downloads and subscription services.
- Buying from a listing without checking your region. Platform support and store availability can change, and the cited announcements do not verify current disc stock or formats.
The practical answer
Play Silent Hill: Townfall next if your priority is a self-contained story, first-person horror, Simon Ordell’s investigation on St. Amelia, CRTV-based signal puzzles and the option to use stealth, evasion or combat. Play the Silent Hill 2 remake next if you want James Sunderland’s search for Mary, an over-the-shoulder camera and a survival-horror structure in which combat is possible but never fully safe.
Neither choice is a prerequisite for the other. Select the game that matches the experience you want, verify the current regional storefront and platform listing, and begin there.
