If combat or stealth is stopping your progress in Silent Hill: Townfall, choose Story combat difficulty; if written clues are the problem, choose Hinted puzzle difficulty. The settings address different challenges, so you can adjust clue help without raising or lowering enemy pressure. The mode names and effects below were reported by TechRadar’s September 2026 review; PlayStation’s store listing confirms an easier alternative preset but does not describe those named modes.
What difficulty should you play Silent Hill: Townfall on?
Pick the setting that matches what is making the game hard for you:
- Enemies, combat, or stealth: Try Story combat difficulty. TechRadar reports that it reduces the threat enemies pose.
- Finding or interpreting written clues: Try Hinted puzzle difficulty. TechRadar reports that it highlights salient text clues in red.
- You want the review’s intended baseline: TechRadar describes Normal combat difficulty as the mode the developers intend players to use.
- You want more enemy pressure: Nightmare is the more demanding combat option described by TechRadar.
These are separate choices, not a single overall easy-to-hard scale. For example, you can use Story to ease enemy pressure while leaving puzzles on Normal, or keep Normal combat while enabling Hinted puzzles.

What do the combat difficulty settings change?
TechRadar’s September 2026 review reports three combat modes. Its descriptions concern enemy threat and stealth, not puzzle clue visibility.

The practical recommendation is to start with Story if enemy encounters are the obstacle, rather than assuming you must lower puzzle difficulty as well. This is based on the review’s description, not a guarantee that every encounter will become easy.
What does Hinted puzzle difficulty do?
TechRadar reports two puzzle modes: Normal and Hinted. In Hinted mode, salient text clues receive red highlights. That provides help noticing relevant written information; it is not reported to solve every puzzle automatically.

Choose Hinted if you are overlooking or struggling to interpret text clues. If you would rather find those clues without highlighting, use Normal. The review reports puzzle difficulty as a choice separate from combat difficulty.
How can you make Townfall more manageable beyond difficulty?
The official US PlayStation Store listing includes accessibility and comfort options alongside its confirmation of an alternative preset that reduces overall challenge. The listing does not name the combat or puzzle modes or explain their individual effects. It lists these additional options:

- Pausing and saving: The listing says gameplay or cinematics can be paused during offline play and that manual saving is available.
These options can make play more comfortable or accessible, but they do not all change enemy difficulty. Menu wording and availability can vary by platform and current game version, so check the settings on your own system.
Why awareness and stealth matter in Townfall
PlayStation describes Townfall as a first-person psychological horror game set in Scotland in 1996, with exploration, evasion, limited weapons and tools, combat, and stealth. Its developer feature says players may run, distract, hide, or fight, and that alerted enemies can track the player. Jon McKellan, Writer and Director at Screen Burn Interactive, wrote that “sometimes fighting isn’t the best option.”

A September 2026 PlayStation Blog feature notes that first-person play gives you less view of your surroundings than a third-person perspective, so threats at your sides or behind you can be harder to see. The feature describes using the handheld CRTV to tune in to nearby enemy positions, sneaking behind objects, peeking around cover, and hiding. It also says motion control can be enabled for aiming a firearm or throwing an object. These are gameplay approaches to consider if awareness or aiming is the difficulty; they are not evidence that a particular setting improves performance for every player or cures motion sickness.

Can you change difficulty in Silent Hill: Townfall?
The available sources establish that the game has an alternative preset and, in TechRadar’s post-release account, separate combat and puzzle difficulty choices. They do not establish the exact menu path for changing those options or whether they can be changed at every point in a playthrough. Check the game’s current in-game settings for the available controls rather than relying on an unverified navigation path.
The official PlayStation Store listing confirms a PS5 edition. Its listed accessibility options and the availability of settings may differ by platform or game version; consult the listing and menus for the edition you play.
