For a first playthrough, use release order: Silent Hill (1999), Silent Hill 2 (2001), Silent Hill 3 (2003), then Silent Hill 4: The Room (2004). This preserves the series’ original context and makes the first game’s connection to Silent Hill 3 land properly. If you specifically want Harry Mason and Heather’s story in internal chronology, play Silent Hill: Origins → Silent Hill → Silent Hill 3.
“In order” is ambiguous here. Release order is the clearest newcomer route, while story chronology is a reconstruction rather than a single official KONAMI timeline. The guide below keeps those two answers separate and explains where the games connect, where they stand alone, and how the modern releases fit.

Silent Hill games in release order
The following is a concise US release chronology represented by the unofficial Silent Hill Memories archive. It is useful for planning a playthrough, but it is not an exhaustive database of every regional, mobile, arcade or spin-off release, nor an official KONAMI master list.

- Silent Hill — 1999. Harry Mason searches the fogbound town for his daughter, establishing the setting, imagery and cult-related storyline that Silent Hill 3 continues.
- Silent Hill 2 — 2001. James Sunderland travels to Silent Hill after receiving a letter connected to his late wife. Its story is principally independent of Harry and Heather’s plot.
- Silent Hill 3 — 2003. Heather’s story follows directly from the first game and is the most obvious narrative continuation in the original series.
- Silent Hill 4: The Room — 2004. It introduces Henry Townshend and a different central mystery while retaining links to the wider series.
- Silent Hill: Origins — 2007. A prequel to the first game, released after the original four titles.
- Silent Hill: Homecoming — 2008. A later entry with its own protagonist and storyline; its place in the classic continuity is disputed.
- Silent Hill: Shattered Memories — 2009. A reimagining that the specialist timeline treats as an alternate reality rather than a straightforward continuation.
- Silent Hill: Downpour — 2012. Another separate protagonist and plot, with its connection to the classic chronology treated as questionable by the specialist reconstruction.
- Silent Hill: The Short Message — January 31, 2024. Include this in a complete released-games list, but keep it separate from the four-game classic plot sequence.
- SILENT HILL 2 Remake — October 8, 2024. A modern retelling of the 2001 James Sunderland story. It occupies the same broad story slot as the original, so playing both is optional rather than required.
- SILENT HILL f — September 25, 2025. Set in 1960s Japan with new characters and a new setting. KONAMI described it as the first series entry set in Japan.
The dates above are release milestones, not claims that every game shares one agreed fictional timeline.
What the story chronology can—and cannot—tell you
KONAMI has not published a single complete official chart covering every game. The commonly cited chronology is a specialist reconstruction combining game details with three Japanese guides published in 2003, 2004 and 2007. Those guides establish relative timing more often than exact calendar years, and some clues conflict. Use the sequences below as informed interpretations, not immutable canon.
The clearest connected sequence: Origins, Silent Hill and Silent Hill 3

The specialist synthesis labels the opening of Origins as “year zero,” places Silent Hill seven years later, and places Silent Hill 3 twenty-four years after Origins. Those are relative intervals in that author’s reconstruction, not calendar dates officially endorsed by KONAMI. Because Origins was released six years after the first game, newcomers generally get a clearer experience by playing the original before the prequel; the chronology route is best reserved for readers who already know the main reveals.
Where Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 4 fit
Silent Hill 2 is principally James Sunderland’s story and can be understood without playing another entry. The specialist chronology places its events around the Walter Sullivan case and notes links to Silent Hill 4, including references involving James and his family. However, the same source documents inconsistencies in guide dates and in-game clues. It is therefore safer to describe a connection than to assign Silent Hill 2 a precise position between the other classic games.
That uncertainty is why the recommended first-playthrough sequence uses release order. It lets you experience Silent Hill 2 as its own story and then encounter Silent Hill 4 with its references in the context in which players originally received them.

Homecoming, Shattered Memories and Downpour
The specialist timeline treats Shattered Memories as an alternate reality. It excludes Homecoming and Downpour from the classic chronology because their connection and canon status are questionable. These are scope choices in a secondary reconstruction, not a published KONAMI ruling that permanently classifies every game.
SILENT HILL f
SILENT HILL f moves the setting to 1960s Japan and follows new characters, so it works as a separate modern entry point. The available official announcements do not settle a definitive placement for it relative to Origins or the original game. Treat it as its own story rather than forcing it into the Harry, Heather or James sequence.
Why release order is the default recommendation
It preserves the first game’s setup
Silent Hill 3 is the direct continuation of the first game’s Harry-and-Heather thread. Playing it after Silent Hill preserves character context and avoids introducing prequel information before the original establishes the mystery.

It keeps independent stories approachable
Silent Hill 2 does not require knowledge of the first game. Starting with it is valid, particularly if James’s psychological story is what interests you, but release order shows how the series expanded beyond its initial continuity.
It avoids pretending that disputed dates are settled
Because the older chronology depends on conflicting clues and guide material, release order gives you a factual, reproducible sequence without assigning questionable calendar years to fictional events.
Choosing a modern starting point
SILENT HILL 2 Remake
The remake is the natural modern route into James Sunderland’s story. It retells the 2001 game’s broad narrative, so a player choosing the remake does not need to play the original first to understand James’s journey. It also does not replace the story setup in Silent Hill and Silent Hill 3; those games follow a different continuity thread.

A physical Day One edition for PlayStation 5 was announced for SILENT HILL f, while the remake is another modern purchase option for readers who want the James storyline. Availability, edition contents and retailer stock vary by country and date.
SILENT HILL f
Choose SILENT HILL f if you want a new cast, a Japanese setting and no obligation to work through earlier plotlines. KONAMI producer Motoi Okamoto described the premise in the PlayStation Blog on June 4, 2025: “In this new game, coming to PS5 on September 25, you play as Shimizu Hinako, a high schooler from Ebisugaoka, who explores her hometown as it becomes engulfed in fog and shifts nightmarishly, solving puzzles and fighting for her life in the process.”
KONAMI’s 2025 corporate report said SILENT HILL f surpassed one million copies in total global sales within two days of release. That is a dated two-day publisher figure, not a current lifetime sales total.

A practical first-playthrough plan
- Begin with Silent Hill (1999) if you want the foundation of the setting and the Harry storyline.
- Play Silent Hill 2 next as a standalone James-centered experience. The original or the remake can fill this position; you do not need both for narrative comprehension.
- Continue to Silent Hill 3 to follow Heather and the direct consequences of the first game.
- Finish the classic run with Silent Hill 4: The Room, treating its links as connective references rather than requiring a perfect master chronology.
- Add Origins afterward if you want the prequel material with the first game’s context already understood.
- Play Homecoming, Shattered Memories, Downpour and The Short Message as separate experiments, without assuming they continue one uninterrupted plot.
- Use SILENT HILL f as an independent modern route whenever you prefer its 1960s Japanese setting.
Common mistakes when looking up the timeline
- Calling a fan reconstruction official: the older dates and intervals come from an unofficial specialist archive drawing on games and Japanese guide material.
- Putting Origins first for every newcomer: it is first in the Harry/Heather story chronology, but release order better protects the original game’s reveals.
- Assuming Silent Hill 2 must be played after the first game: James’s story is approachable on its own.
- Forcing SILENT HILL f into the old timeline: its 1960s Japanese setting and new cast make it a separate starting point until an official placement says otherwise.
- Confusing a release list with a narrative list: The Short Message, the remake and newer entries belong in a release chronology, but they should not automatically be inserted into the classic four-game plot sequence.
