For most players, the best connected-story route is Silent Hill: Origins → Silent Hill → Silent Hill 3. If you want to experience the series as audiences did, use release order instead. Silent Hill 2 is a largely self-contained James Sunderland story, and its 2024 release is a full remake of the 2001 original—not a new chapter in the numbering.

Which order should you use?

“Silent Hill games in order” can mean two different things. Release order follows the history of the franchise, including changes in developers, platforms and formats. Story order tries to place games in the same fictional continuity. Those approaches produce different lists, so choose according to what you want from the series.

  • Choose release order if you are surveying the franchise, want to see its design evolve, or plan to include spin-offs and recent releases.
  • Choose the connected story route if you want the clearest narrative chain: Origins, then Silent Hill, then Silent Hill 3.
  • Start with Silent Hill 2 if you prefer a contained psychological-horror story that does not require knowledge of the first game. The 2024 remake retells that same story.
  • Treat Shattered Memories and Silent Hill f separately rather than forcing them into the classic town chronology.

Silent Hill games in release order

The table below is a practical list of major console and standalone releases. It is organized by year, because the same game sometimes launched in different territories in different years. It is not an exhaustive catalogue of every regional mobile release.

# Game Release year How it fits
1 Silent Hill 1999 Original main entry
2 Silent Hill 2 2001 Separate James Sunderland story
3 Silent Hill 3 2003 Continues the first game’s narrative
4 Silent Hill 4: The Room 2004 Original-run entry with a different protagonist
5 Silent Hill: Origins 2007 Prequel to the original game
6 Silent Hill: Homecoming 2008 or 2009 Later entry; year depends on territory
7 Silent Hill: Shattered Memories 2009 or 2010 Alternate-reality reimagining
8 Silent Hill: Downpour 2012 Later standalone entry
9 Silent Hill: Book of Memories 2012 Spin-off released for PlayStation Vita
10 Silent Hill: The Short Message 2024 Standalone modern release
11 Silent Hill 2 remake 2024 Full remake of the 2001 game
12 Silent Hill f 2025 New story set in 1960s Japan

Why the dates sometimes look inconsistent

Launch dates were not worldwide events on one universal day. A North American date, a European date and a first regional release can all differ. For example, Konami’s European product information gives the original Silent Hill 2 date as November 21, 2001, while its remake page gives October 8, 2024. A year-only list avoids implying that one territory’s date applies everywhere.

#1 Best Overall
Silent Hill 2 (PS5)
  • Fully Remade to terrify modern audiences
  • KONAMI's intense psychological horror masterpiece SILENT HILL 2 is made exclusively for PlayStation 5
  • The main protagonist James Sunderland searches for clues in the namesake town, after receiving a mysterious letter from his wife Mary… who has long been dead
  • Experience the eerie monsters and other manifestations of James' consciousness reworked after 20 years
  • Made with state-of-the-art technology to play on modern entertainment systems in 4K

Homecoming is commonly listed as 2008 in some regions and 2009 in others. Shattered Memories likewise appears as 2009 or 2010 depending on the market. If you publish or maintain a day-level chronology, state which territory and platform you are using.

Entries outside the main list

The franchise also includes releases such as Silent Hill: Play Novel, Silent Hill: The Arcade, Silent Hill: Mobile (Orphan) and Silent Hill: The Escape. They are genuine games, but they are often omitted from a beginner’s guide because they were tied to particular regions, mobile services or arcade hardware. A chronology that also contains films, books or soundtracks should not be mistaken for a game-only list.

Konami’s catalogue covers a selection of older and newer games, including Book of Memories, Downpour, Shattered Memories, The Short Message and Silent Hill f. The broader release chronology is a fan-maintained compilation, useful for regional details and obscure titles rather than an official, complete master list.

Silent Hill story timeline

The most defensible connected sequence is:

  1. Silent Hill: Origins
  2. Silent Hill
  3. Silent Hill 3

A timeline built from in-game evidence and several Japanese guide timelines places Origins at the starting point, the original game about seven years later, and Silent Hill 3 about 24 years after Origins. Those are relative intervals, not settled calendar years. The supporting guides do not consistently provide exact years, and some details conflict, so presenting a single precise year for every event would overstate what is established.

1. Silent Hill: Origins

Origins is a prequel to the first Silent Hill. Playing it first gives you the earliest point in the connected arc and lets later references land in chronological order. It was released in 2007, long after the original, so its design and production context belong to a later era even though its story comes first.

2. Silent Hill

The 1999 original follows the beginning of the central arc. In story order it comes after Origins, despite being the game that introduced the series to players. If you want the historical experience, play it first in release order; if you want the in-world sequence, place it second.

3. Silent Hill 3

Silent Hill 3 directly continues the first game’s narrative, making it the natural conclusion of the connected core route. It is third in the story sequence even though Silent Hill 2 released between the first and third games. That difference is why a simple numbered list can be misleading.

Where Silent Hill 2 belongs

Silent Hill 2 follows James Sunderland, who receives a letter from his deceased wife and returns to Silent Hill. Its plot is designed to stand on its own, so you can begin with it without playing Origins or the original game. It is best described as a separate story in the wider setting rather than as the next episode of the first game’s plot.

Rank #3
Silent Hill 2 - Compatible for PS5 - UK PAL (EU Version)
  • UK PSN account may be required for any online features

Konami Digital Entertainment B.V. describes the 2024 release on its official product page as “a full remake of the original SILENT HILL 2, first released for PlayStation®2 in 2001.” In other words, the remake belongs in a release chronology because it is a 2024 product, but it does not create a new story position between the older games.

Where Silent Hill 4: The Room belongs

Silent Hill 4: The Room follows the original run in release order and has its own protagonist and narrative. It contains references involving Walter Sullivan and material that relates to Silent Hill 2. Because chronology sources identify conflicts in some of those details, give it a cautious placement rather than claiming a universally accepted exact year. For a first playthrough, putting it after Silent Hill 3 in release order is the least confusing choice.

Shattered Memories is an alternate continuity

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories is an alternate-reality reimagining, not another chapter in the same continuity as the original trilogy. It can be played whenever you want a different interpretation of the premise. Its 2009 or 2010 release placement belongs in the release list, while its story should remain outside the classic timeline.

Homecoming and Downpour

Homecoming and Downpour are later entries, but the commonly cited core timeline excludes them because their relationship to the classic arc is considered questionable. That scope decision is not proof that either game is definitively non-canon. The careful description is that their exact position in the original continuity is unsettled; play them after the core games if you want release-era context.

Silent Hill f

Silent Hill f was released on September 25, 2025, according to the official series portal. Its setting in 1960s Japan distinguishes it from the older stories centered on the town of Silent Hill. The available official material confirms its release but does not establish a chronology connecting it to the core sequence, so treat it as a separate setting rather than inserting it into the older timeline.

Best starting point by what you want

Your goal Start with Continue with Reason
Follow one connected storyline Silent Hill: Origins Silent Hill → Silent Hill 3 Prequel, original arc, then direct continuation
Experience franchise history Silent Hill (1999) Use the release-order table Preserves the order audiences encountered the games
Play one self-contained story Silent Hill 2 or its 2024 remake Optional James Sunderland’s story does not require the first game
Try an alternate interpretation Shattered Memories Optional It is a reimagining in a different continuity
Play the newest setting Silent Hill f Optional Its 1960s Japanese setting is separate from the classic town chronology

Platform and edition checks

Check the platform before choosing a route. Konami’s product information lists the 2024 Silent Hill 2 remake for PlayStation 5 and PC. The original game’s official European product information lists older platforms, so access to the 2001 version depends on the hardware and edition you can obtain. Availability, storefront listings and physical stock can change by country; do not assume that a disc or digital edition offered in one region is sold in another.

If you are deciding between the original and remake, treat them as two releases of the same James Sunderland story. Choose based on the platform you own and whether you want the 2001 version or the modern remake, rather than playing both to understand the chronology.

Common ordering mistakes

  • Assuming the number determines story order. Silent Hill 2 is numbered second in release history but is not the middle chapter of the first game’s plot.
  • Putting Origins after Silent Hill 3 because it was released in 2007. That is correct only for release order; its narrative role is a prequel.
  • Counting the remake as a new sequel. The 2024 remake retells the 2001 Silent Hill 2 story.
  • Mixing regional dates. A list that uses a North American launch for one game and a European launch for another can create a false ordering. Use years or label each territory.
  • Treating every chronology entry as a game. Franchise timelines can also list films, books, soundtracks and other merchandise. Keep a game guide limited to game releases.
  • Declaring every later game definitively non-canon. The exact continuity status of Homecoming and Downpour is debated; describe the uncertainty instead.

A practical play plan

  1. Pick your objective. Select the three-game connected route, the full release survey, or a single standalone entry.
  2. Check access. Confirm that your console or PC supports the edition you intend to play, especially for the original games and the PS5/PC remake.
  3. Keep two lists if needed. Mark each title by release year for franchise history and by continuity for story order. This prevents the 2007 prequel and 2001 standalone sequel from being confused.
  4. Handle optional entries after the core. Play Silent Hill 4, Homecoming, Downpour, Book of Memories, Shattered Memories, The Short Message and Silent Hill f according to your interest rather than forcing them into one definitive timeline.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Silent Hill: Origins the first game to play?

It is the first game in the clearest connected story sequence, followed by Silent Hill and Silent Hill 3. It is not the first release; the original Silent Hill launched in 1999 and Origins in 2007.

Best Value

Can I start with Silent Hill 2?

Yes. James Sunderland’s story is designed to work as a standalone entry. You can choose the 2001 original or the 2024 full remake, depending on your platform and preferred edition.

Is Silent Hill f part of the original Silent Hill timeline?

Its 1960s Japan setting separates it from the classic town stories. Current official information confirms its September 25, 2025 release but does not establish a connection that would give it a fixed place in the older chronology.

Should I play the Silent Hill 2 remake before the original?

Neither is chronologically earlier as a story: the remake retells the 2001 game. Select the version available on your system or the presentation you prefer.
