Start with the Silent Hill 2 remake if you want a modern version of a classic, or choose Silent Hill f for a completely new story set in 1960s Japan. Silent Hill: Townfall is another current option if you specifically want first-person horror. You do not need to play every numbered game in release order: the series includes original games, remakes, and self-contained new stories.
What are the Silent Hill games?
Silent Hill is a psychological-horror game series that began on the original PlayStation in 1999. Its entries are not one continuous campaign that demands a single order. Some games revisit earlier stories, while others introduce different characters, locations, time periods, and even viewpoints.
That distinction matters when deciding where to begin. Konami explicitly describes Silent Hill 2 as a full remake of the 2001 PlayStation 2 game. By contrast, Silent Hill f is a new story with new characters and settings, and Silent Hill: Townfall is a self-contained first-person entry. A remake preserves a previous game’s basic identity while rebuilding parts of its presentation and systems; a new story is not a replacement for an older game.

Which Silent Hill game should you play first?
Choose the Silent Hill 2 remake for a modern classic
The remake is the most direct starting point for someone who wants to experience an older, important entry without seeking out its 2001 release. Konami’s product page calls it “a full remake of the original SILENT HILL 2, first released for PlayStation®2 in 2001.” The remake retains the game’s identity while rebuilding its presentation. Konami specifically identifies changes to perspective, combat, explorable areas and cutscenes.
It is therefore a practical choice for players who want a current-platform game that revisits a classic. You do not have to play the original first. The available official information describes the remake as a complete game, not as an expansion that assumes ownership of the 2001 version.
Check your store before buying if you are on Xbox. Konami’s product listing identifies PS5 and PC/Steam, while a 2026 milestone announcement includes Xbox Series X|S in the platforms counted for the remake. Store listings and editions may use different labels, so verify the current listing for your region and console.
Choose Silent Hill f for a new story in 1960s Japan
Silent Hill f is not a remake of the first game or of Silent Hill 2. Konami describes it as a new story with new characters and settings, and says it can be enjoyed by newcomers as well as returning players. Its 1960s Japan setting also makes it a different proposition from games centered on the familiar American town.

It suits readers who want an original narrative rather than a recreation of a previous plot. The listed platforms are PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam. Because availability of editions and storefronts can vary by country, use the store associated with your account to confirm the version you can purchase.
Choose Townfall for first-person, self-contained horror
Silent Hill: Townfall is a full-length entry with its own story. It is set on a Scottish island in 1996 and uses a first-person perspective, which separates it mechanically and geographically from the Silent Hill 2 remake. Konami lists PS5, Steam and Epic Games Store versions and says the physical edition is for PS5.
This is a good entry point when your priority is first-person psychological horror and a contained story. The available official description does not require prior knowledge or call it the definitive introduction to the franchise, so approach it as a distinct story rather than as the next chapter you must unlock by playing earlier games.

Release order is still useful if you want to study how the series developed. The starting point is the original Silent Hill in 1999, followed by later entries and the 2001 Silent Hill 2 that the current remake revisits. However, release order should be treated as a way to explore the history, not as a prerequisite for understanding the newer games.
Do not assume that the word “remake” means every detail is unchanged. The Silent Hill 2 remake alters the camera perspective, combat, areas and cutscenes. Conversely, do not assume that a new story must be played after the original games: Konami presents Silent Hill f as accessible to newcomers.
What is known about the first Silent Hill remake?
Konami’s FY2026 corporate report confirms that a remake of the first Silent Hill is in development. The report says: “We are also working on a remake of the first game in the SILENT HILL series as well as a new title, SILENT HILL: Townfall, with plans to develop this series further going forward.”

Treat announcements that add an unconfirmed date or console as speculation unless Konami publishes those details. Current platform details and buying cautions
PS5 and PC
The Silent Hill 2 remake’s official product information lists PS5 and PC through Steam. Townfall is listed for PS5, Steam and Epic Games Store. These listings indicate the supported release platforms, but they do not by themselves confirm identical graphics settings, save compatibility or feature parity between console and PC versions.
Xbox Series X|S
Silent Hill f is listed for Xbox Series X|S. Konami’s 2026 milestone announcement also counts Xbox Series X|S when describing the platforms associated with the Silent Hill 2 remake. Because the product page and milestone communication use different scopes, check the Xbox store entry for the exact edition and purchase status in your country.
Older games and regional availability
The original game’s PlayStation debut is documented, but the available official information does not provide a complete current storefront, remaster, subscription or backward-compatibility guide for the older catalogue. Do not infer that a 1999 or 2001 release is currently purchasable on a particular modern console. Search your regional PlayStation, Xbox or PC store immediately before buying, and confirm that the listing is the game and edition you intend to play.

Konami reported 17.8 million Silent Hill series copies as of the end of June 2026. That figure includes units shipped, store downloads and subscription services, so it is not a simple count of boxed sales.

Konami separately reported 5 million cumulative units or players for the Silent Hill 2 remake as of January 31, 2026. Its measurement includes physical and digital sales, store downloads and subscription services across PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The wording combines different forms of access and should not be read as five million conventional retail copies.
The same FY2026 report says Silent Hill f reached 1 million global sales within two days of its September 2025 release. That is a sales figure, while the series and Silent Hill 2 figures include additional categories such as downloads, shipped units or subscription access. These numbers therefore show scale but are not directly comparable measurements.
A simple decision guide
- Decide whether you want a remake or a new story. Pick the Silent Hill 2 remake for a rebuilt classic; pick Silent Hill f for new characters and a new setting.
- Choose your preferred viewpoint. The remake uses an over-the-shoulder perspective, while Townfall is explicitly first-person.
- Match the setting to your interest. The remake revisits the world associated with Silent Hill; Silent Hill f takes place in 1960s Japan; Townfall is set in Scotland in 1996.
- Confirm your platform and region. Compare the official platform list with the store account you will use. Edition names, physical availability and storefront access can differ by country.
- Ignore pressure to start with the original. The official descriptions do not impose a required play order, and the newer games are presented as complete experiences.
Bottom line for newcomers
For most players seeking one current recommendation, start with the Silent Hill 2 remake: it is an explicitly identified remake of a landmark 2001 entry and is available on current systems. Choose Silent Hill f instead if a new Japanese setting and new cast appeal more than revisiting a classic. Choose Townfall if first-person horror, a self-contained plot and its Scotland setting are the deciding factors. The first-game remake is real and in development, but its release date and platforms remain unannounced.
