Shure cartridges are discontinued legacy products, so the right choice today depends less on a blanket “best” verdict than on the exact model, its condition, the stylus fitted to it, and whether a compatible replacement can be found. Shure’s historical specifications help distinguish models, but they do not establish which one sounds best in a current setup.
What Shure cartridge buyers need to know today
Shure announced on May 1, 2018 that it would discontinue production of its phono products effective summer 2018. This is a guide to legacy products, not a review of a current production line. Shure’s discontinuation statement records the decision.
Shure’s company history says it continued producing phono cartridges into the 21st century and notes the V15 Type III’s release in 1973. Those historical milestones do not tell you the condition of an individual cartridge or the quality of a replacement stylus being sold now.
How the M44 models differ on paper
Shure’s 1974 catalog documents distinct stylus geometries, tracking-force ranges, and applications across the M44 family. These are historical specifications, not fresh measurements or instructions to set up a particular used example without checking its condition and manufacturer guidance.

The catalog also says N44-series styli may be interchanged among M44 Standard Series cartridges. Treat that as a historical Shure specification, not a guarantee that any listing or substitute stylus will fit every cartridge. Confirm the exact cartridge and stylus pairing before purchase. Shure’s 1974 M44 catalog is the source for these figures and distinctions.
How to choose a used Shure cartridge or stylus
- Identify the exact cartridge model. Read the model marking on the cartridge body rather than relying on a seller’s broad “Shure compatible” description.
- Match the replacement to that model. Shure identifies N97xE as the replacement needle for M97xE, and N44-7 as a replacement for M44-7 and M44-7-H. These documented matches do not make the stylus interchangeable across unrelated models.
- Check whether the item is actually available and what it is. Shure marks N97xE discontinued. A product page or search result that names a matching model does not establish present stock, authenticity, or condition.
- Confirm the setup and intended records. Consider the tonearm and setup, the records you play, and the model’s documented application. For example, the 1974 catalog lists the N44-3 for 78 rpm records, unlike the M44-7’s stated 33⅓ and 45 rpm use.
- Ask about the cartridge and stylus condition. Historical specifications cannot establish the condition or performance of an individual used part. Request clear model identification and condition details from the seller.
Where to look for discontinued Shure styli
Shure’s support page answers the question, “Where might I find discontinued styli (needles) for older Shure phono cartridges?” It says that when Shure no longer sells a replacement stylus, buyers can try third-party sources. Its U.S. suggestions include JICO Stylus, LP Gear, TurntableNeedles.com, and Styli Record Needle Store; its European suggestions include Mantra Audio and DaCapo Audio. This is sourcing guidance, not confirmation of current inventory, authenticity, or fit for every cartridge. Check availability and exact compatibility at the time you buy. Shure’s discontinued-stylus support guidance lists these suggestions.

For marketplace searches, use “Shure cartridge replacement stylus” and add the exact cartridge model. Treat results as candidates: check the model association, seller’s condition information, and whether the replacement is the right part. Shure’s documented N97xE/M97xE and N44-7/M44-7 associations are useful starting points, not proof that Shure currently sells those items new. What the available evidence can—and cannot—say about sound
The documented comparisons establish differences in stylus shape, tracking force, and stated application; they do not establish a present-day sonic winner. No controlled current listening comparison or fresh laboratory measurement is available in these sources. The cartridge’s condition, the fitted stylus, the tonearm and setup, and the records being played all matter to the practical decision, so a model’s historical reputation alone is not enough to predict results in a particular system.
