Former Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida argues that physical game discs make little practical and economic sense because modern releases often require patches, downloadable content and additional game data anyway. His comments, reported after an interview at the Busan Indie Connect Festival on August 18–19, 2026, came as Sony was reported to be planning to stop producing PlayStation game discs in 2028.
The “Father of PlayStation” wording is headline framing, not a verified description of Yoshida. That title is more commonly associated with Ken Kutaragi; the speaker identified in the reports is Yoshida.

What Yoshida actually said
Yoshida described himself as a completely digital consumer: “I don’t want to manage discs or swap discs. I want all my games on my dashboard, and I just select a game and play it.” His argument is primarily about convenience, but it also reflects how games are shipped today.
A disc is frequently only the starting point. Developers can release launch-day patches, post-release fixes, downloadable expansions and other data that the console downloads after installation. As a result, a boxed copy may not provide a complete, final version of the game without an internet connection.

That does not establish that every physical game is incomplete or that manufacturing has a universally proven cost disadvantage. The reports contain no audited cost breakdown, market-share figure or other quantified study demonstrating that physical games are uneconomic in every case. Yoshida’s statement is an industry position in an ongoing business and ownership debate.
Is Sony ending physical PlayStation games?
Reports in August 2026 said Sony was planning to stop producing PlayStation game discs from 2028. “Planning” is important: the coverage describes a reported target, not a confirmed timetable covering every region, game, retailer or special edition. Sony CFO Lin Tao was reported as saying the move was not expected to create a negative business impact.

Even if Sony reaches that target, physical products could continue in altered forms. A box might contain a redemption code rather than a pressed disc, while limited merchandise and collector packaging could remain available. The practical change would be the loss of a disc as the software-delivery medium, not necessarily the disappearance of every boxed product.

Do PS5 discs still need downloads?
Sometimes. A disc can contain the core game, but the console may download a patch before online play, install additional content released after manufacturing, or retrieve data that was deliberately left off the disc. The requirement varies by title; there is no single rule that all PS5 discs are either fully self-contained or download-only.

Before buying a physical copy for offline use, check whether the specific game requires an online activation, a mandatory update or server-side services. A disc can improve your fallback options without guaranteeing permanent, fully offline access.
Why ownership and preservation remain contested
Resale and lending
A physical copy is a transferable object. Owners can normally lend it to someone with compatible hardware or sell it through the second-hand market. Digital purchases generally grant an account-bound license, so handing over the game usually means handing over access to the entire account, which is not an equivalent or desirable transfer.

Storefront and server dependence
Digital access depends on the account, the storefront and the ability to download or authenticate software. Physical media can remain usable after a storefront changes, but that advantage is limited when a game requires online activation, server-side services or a patch that is no longer hosted. Preservation is therefore a matter of degree rather than a simple physical-versus-digital guarantee.
Collector value
Collectors value the package itself: the case, artwork, printed material and the connection to a particular release. Yoshida reportedly acknowledged people with walls full of physical packages and expected collector editions to continue. Those editions could become boxed products containing a download code instead of a game disc, preserving the display object while changing how the software is delivered.

What “economic sense” means in this debate
For a publisher, digital distribution can avoid pressing, packaging and shipping discs and can deliver updates directly. For a player, the calculation is different: digital convenience may outweigh resale value and collecting, while a disc may be preferable for gifting, second-hand buying or retaining a tangible copy.
Neither side follows automatically from Yoshida’s preference. His comments explain why a major industry executive sees discs as unnecessary for his own use; they do not prove that every player values convenience more than transferability, preservation or collecting.
What to expect if disc production ends in 2028
- New releases may be sold digitally or in boxes containing download codes rather than game discs.
- Existing discs would continue to circulate through personal collections and the used market, subject to compatibility and online dependencies.
- Collector editions could survive as merchandise-focused packages, but their software may require a code and an account.
- Players who want offline resilience should examine each game’s activation, patch and server requirements instead of assuming that a box guarantees permanent access.
The central distinction is between a physical package and a self-contained physical game. Packaging can remain valuable to collectors even if the disc disappears, while digital convenience can be compelling for players who want one library and no media swapping. Sony’s reported 2028 target would make that distinction increasingly important, but the available reporting does not provide a quantified industry-wide verdict that physical games have no economic value.
