Heat-shrunk plastic can become a small charm, but the documented process is not origami: decorate and cut the plastic, punch any hanging hole, then heat it until it curls and flattens at a reduced size. No fold-first method is established by the available instructions.
What “heat-powered Shrinky Dink origami” actually describes
The name may suggest folding, but the documented activity is shrink-plastic art. You draw or decorate a flat sheet, cut out a shape and heat it. The plastic initially curls or crinkles; with continued heating, it should flatten as it shrinks. The instructions do not describe folding plastic into an origami figure before heating.
The Chicago Section of the American Chemical Society explains that #6 plastic is polystyrene. In manufacturing, the plastic is heated, rolled and rapidly cooled; reheating allows it to contract in area and become thicker. Its DIY activity estimates the finished piece at about one-third of its original size. That is an instructional estimate, not a guaranteed ratio for every material.
Materials for a shrink-plastic charm
- Shrink-plastic craft sheet, or clearly identified recyclable #6 polystyrene plastic
- Permanent markers suitable for the surface
- Scissors
- Hole punch, if the finished piece will hang
- Cooking sheet and foil
- Oven or toaster oven
- Oven mitt and spatula
- Yarn or another hanging material, added after cooling
These supplies are listed in the Maryland Science Center’s charm activity. Check the instructions for your specific shrink sheet or material before heating; a single temperature or duration should not be treated as universal.

How to make a heat-shrunk plastic charm
- Identify the material. For repurposed packaging, check that it is marked #6 before using it. Do not assume an unmarked plastic will shrink in the same way.
- Prepare the shape. Draw or decorate the plastic, then cut out the design. Make any hole for a ring or yarn now: the finished plastic will be smaller and harder to punch.
- Heat according to the material instructions. Place the piece on the prepared cooking sheet and use the oven or toaster oven as directed for that material. The piece may curl or crinkle at first.
- Watch for it to flatten. Continue following the material’s directions; the Chicago ACS activity describes the plastic flattening as shrinking completes. Avoid relying on a universal heating time or temperature.
- Remove and cool safely. An adult should supervise oven use. Use an oven mitt to remove the tray, and let the piece cool to room temperature before touching it.
- Add the hanger. Once the charm is cool, thread yarn or attach another suitable hanging material through the hole.
Choosing between craft sheets and recycled plastic
Purpose-made shrink-plastic sheets come with material-specific preparation and heating instructions, so use those directions for that product. Recycled plastic is an alternative only when it is clearly identified as #6 polystyrene; the Chicago ACS activity also advises working in a well-ventilated area. The cited instructions do not establish comparative product testing, so they cannot show that one option produces better results across products.
For either option, the practical sequence is the same: decorate and cut first, make holes before heating, and let the shrunken piece cool before handling. Use the directions for the actual sheet or material rather than transferring settings from another one.

Why the piece curls before it flattens
The early curl is part of the heating process described in both the Maryland Science Center activity and the Chicago ACS activity. It is not, by itself, the endpoint: the ACS instructions say the plastic should flatten with continued heating. Follow the product or material’s instructions if it does not flatten as described rather than improvising a different temperature or heating time.

Safety and handling
- Use only packaging identified with the #6 recycling mark when repurposing plastic.
- Work in a well-ventilated area when using recycled plastic, as advised by the Chicago ACS activity.
- Have an adult supervise oven use and handle the hot tray with an oven mitt.
- Let the piece cool to room temperature before touching it or attaching a hanger.
