To display your receiver’s menu, select the TV input connected to the receiver, then open the menu with the receiver remote’s model-specific button—often HOME, MENU, or SETUP. If the picture appears but the menu does not, check the receiver’s HDMI output and confirm that the exact model supports an on-screen display (OSD) over that connection.
How to display the receiver menu
- Turn on the TV and receiver.
- On the TV remote, press Input or Source and choose the HDMI input connected to the receiver.
- On the receiver remote, press the menu control specified for your model. It may be HOME, MENU, or SETUP; these labels are examples, not interchangeable instructions.
Manufacturer procedures vary. For the Sony STR-DN1080, select the TV input connected to the receiver and press HOME, as described in the STR-DN1080 Help Guide. On the Yamaha RX-V567, press SETUP to view the Setup menu on the TV’s OSD, according to the RX-V567 Owner’s Manual.
If the menu does not appear
Check the TV input and receiver output
Make sure the TV is displaying the input connected to the receiver, and check that the cable runs from the receiver’s correct TV output to that TV input. The required jack varies by model. Sony’s STR-DH830 instructions require an HDMI connection for its GUI, while Sony specifies HDMI TV OUT for OSD on the STR-DH750 and STR-DH550. Some receivers require a preliminary setting as well as a menu button. For the STR-DH830, Sony says to press GUI Mode until “GUI ON” appears on the receiver display, then press HOME or MENU if needed. Follow the STR-DH830 instructions rather than assuming another receiver uses the same sequence.

Allow for a delayed display
Sony notes that the OSD may take time to appear, depending on the TV. If you have selected the correct input and opened the menu, give the screen a moment before changing settings. The note appears in Sony’s STR-DH750/STR-DH550 troubleshooting guidance.
Check output-mode settings where applicable
Some models have additional conditions for particular HDMI outputs. For the STR-DN1080, Sony says that when the TV is connected to HDMI OUT B/HDMI ZONE, HDMI Out B Mode must be set to Main. Check the STR-DN1080 Help Guide for that model-specific setting.

Confirm that your receiver supports TV menus
Not every receiver can send video or display its information on a TV. Sony states that “All Sony® receivers do not have the capability to send a video signal and display information to a TV.” The statement is in its STR-DH830 support article, modified July 23, 2019. Check your exact model’s manual for OSD support and the required output before changing cables or assuming the receiver is faulty.
