To enable check boxes for selecting files and folders in Windows 11, open File Explorer and choose View > Show > Item check boxes. Check boxes will appear next to items, giving you a visible way to select them.
Turn on item check boxes in Windows 11

Open File Explorer from the taskbar or Start menu, or press Windows logo key + E. Microsoft documents this keyboard shortcut and the File Explorer setting.

Select View on the File Explorer command bar.

Select Show.

Select Item check boxes. When the option is selected, check boxes appear next to files and folders.

Where the check boxes appear
After you turn on the setting, File Explorer shows a check box beside files and folders so you can select items using the boxes. The Microsoft instructions do not require a particular folder or view, a restart, or an additional utility.

Windows 11 and Windows 10 use different menus
These steps are for Windows 11. Microsoft’s Windows 10 instructions use a different route: View > Options > Change folder and search options > View tab > Use check boxes to select items > OK. If you are following instructions for Windows 11, use View > Show > Item check boxes instead.
