If a carrier gives you a scan time without a time zone or UTC offset, preserve and display it as reported; don’t convert it to the customer’s local time. The value is a wall-clock reading, not enough information to identify a unique moment worldwide. Convert only when the carrier provides a real offset or other reliable time-zone context.
Why an offset-less scan is not an instant
A timestamp such as 2026-07-20 21:49:00 gives a date and clock reading, but no time zone. It could describe 21:49 at the scan location in any of several zones, and therefore cannot be placed at one unique point on the global timeline. Appending Z or assuming the viewer’s time zone does not resolve the ambiguity; it invents information.
Keep two kinds of values distinct in your tracking system:
- Instant: A time tied to a known offset, such as an ISO timestamp ending in
-04:00orZ. It can be converted to another time zone. - Wall-clock reading: A date and time supplied without a known offset or zone. Preserve the original value and its carrier context; do not treat it as a convertible instant.

How JavaScript can misinterpret a carrier value
Passing a string to JavaScript’s Date parser can attach a time-zone meaning that the carrier never supplied. ECMAScript specifies that offset-less date-only forms are interpreted as UTC, while offset-less date-time forms are interpreted as local time. Strings outside the specification’s date-time format may be handled using implementation-specific heuristics. See the ECMAScript date-time string format specification.
That behavior makes a generic new Date(carrierString) a poor way to preserve carrier semantics. Parse formats deliberately, retain the original string, and do not silently turn a wall-clock value into a supposedly precise instant.

Preserve date-only scans as date-only
A carrier may report a date without a clock. That is different from a scan at midnight. Keep a distinct date-only state and display just the date; a parser or database default must not manufacture 00:00 and imply that the event happened at that time.

- Original value: The exact date or timestamp string the carrier supplied, without adding
Zor an invented offset. - Value type: Whether it is a date-only value, an offset-less wall-clock reading, or an offset-bearing timestamp.
- Carrier and scan location: The source and place associated with the event, when available.
- Parsed fields: Date, clock time, and offset as separate fields when the format supports them. Do not infer a missing zone from the viewer’s device.
For display, retain the carrier’s digits for a wall-clock reading and label the source clock where that helps prevent confusion. For a value with a known offset, you can show a localized time, but preserve the original carrier value as well.
Make location more prominent than an unexplained time
Customers often need to know where a delivery scan occurred before they need to reconcile its clock with their own. A scan at a depot, locker, or access point can call for different next steps than one recorded at the customer’s address. Give the scan location clear visual prominence when it is available, and avoid implying that a “delivered” status necessarily means delivery to the home.

Do not flag a delivery just because it was late
An evening scan is not, by itself, evidence of an error. In a 2026 article, 24hTrack described approximately 27,000 recent delivery events from its own platform: about 9% (roughly 1 in 11) occurred from 20:00 through 05:59. It also reported that roughly 8–9% of deliveries occurred in each hour during its late-morning-to-mid-afternoon busiest window. These are company-reported observations, not industry-wide rates, and should not be applied to every carrier, route, or season. 24hTrack’s article describes the sample.
The same article says approximately 96% of its sample’s delivery scans included a time of day, while about 4% were date-only. Its initial estimate of about 72% was corrected after the author recognized that a first pass had missed 12-hour clock strings. That correction is a description of the author’s measurement process, not a separate dataset. The article reports both values such as YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS and July 20, 2026 9:00 PM; a parser that recognizes only one shape can misclassify the other.
