During setup, the Wi-Fi extender connects to your router’s existing Wi-Fi network. Once setup is complete, connect your phone, laptop, or other device to the extender’s network—or to the shared network name if your equipment supports one. The extender itself still needs a usable signal from the router, so place it between the router and the area with weak coverage.

Which device connects to which network?

There are two separate connections:

  • The extender connects to the router. It uses the router’s Wi-Fi as its upstream connection.
  • Your devices connect to the extender’s coverage. They may join a separately named extender network, or a shared network name supported by the equipment.

During setup, select your router’s Wi-Fi network and enter its password. The exact steps and labels vary by extender model and firmware; for example, see TP-Link’s setup guidance and its RE205/RE305 V3 setup guide.

How to set up the extender

  1. Choose a setup method. Use the model’s app or web setup flow, or WPS if both the router and extender support it. Follow the instructions for your particular hardware and firmware.
  2. Select the router’s host network. Choose the Wi-Fi network the router is already broadcasting.
  3. Enter the router’s Wi-Fi password. This lets the extender join the network; it is not a separate internet service or replacement router connection.
  4. Choose or confirm the extender network name. Some models create a distinct name, while others support using the router’s existing name. Check the device instructions for the available option.
  5. Place the extender and connect your devices. After setup, join the extender’s network if it has a separate name. Setup methods and available options differ by model; consult the NETGEAR quick setup guide or your manufacturer’s documentation as applicable.

Should the extender have the same Wi-Fi name as the router?

A separate network name makes it easier to tell which access point a device is using, but you may have to select the extender network manually. Using the same name can make the extended coverage appear under the familiar network, but it does not guarantee seamless roaming: a phone or laptop may stay connected to the router even when the extender’s signal is stronger. NETGEAR describes same-SSID setup in its SSID guidance. ASUS explains why some extenders use a separate name or suffix in its network-name guidance. Follow the documentation for your specific products rather than assuming devices will always switch to the nearest access point.

Where to place the extender

Place it roughly halfway between the router and the weak-coverage area, but only where it can still receive a usable signal from the router. An extender cannot pass along a strong connection if it is itself too far away to receive one.

  • If the extender cannot connect during initial setup, TP-Link advises temporarily moving it closer to the router, preferably within 16 feet. This is troubleshooting guidance for setup, not a universal placement standard.
  • After it connects, move it toward the weak area while keeping it within the router’s usable range.
  • If the extender indicates a poor connection, move it closer to the router and check the signal again.

See TP-Link’s setup and troubleshooting guidance and the RE205/RE305 V3 user guide for model-specific instructions.

Should you use an extender, replace the router, or choose mesh?

First check whether the connection works well near the router. An extender is intended to extend coverage; it does not fix an underlying router or internet-service problem. If the connection is poor beside the router too, diagnose that issue before adding an extender.

Option When it may fit What to check
Wi-Fi extender The router works, but a particular room or area has weak coverage. Whether the extender can receive a usable router signal at the intended location, plus compatibility and supported network features.
Router replacement The connection is poor even near the router, or the router itself is the issue. Determine whether the problem is the router or internet service before treating coverage reach as the cause.
Mesh Wi-Fi Coverage needs extend across a larger or more demanding home or office. Check the system’s compatibility, coverage suitability, and device-specific roaming behavior.

NETGEAR presents mesh as a possible fit for larger or more demanding spaces in its range-extender setup guide. The right choice depends on the home, equipment, and where the connection fails; there is no universal performance outcome established for every setup. For broader context on extender use, see TechRadar’s Wi-Fi extender guide.

Check compatibility before setup

Do not assume every extender works with every router. TP-Link says its extenders work with almost any router, but may not work with routers or gateways using altered, non-standard, or outdated firmware. Check the support page for the exact extender model and hardware version, and confirm the supported Wi-Fi bands, security, network-name options, and roaming features in the manufacturers’ documentation.
