Wait if you can comfortably delay and are aiming for a known promotion; buy now if you need the console and its current checkout price is fair for the exact model. A sale is possible, not guaranteed—and past discounts are not reliable forecasts. Compare the same console, condition, and bundle across sellers, and check whether a return or price-adjustment policy protects a purchase made now.
What the current prices and past sales can—and cannot—tell you
Use a manufacturer’s recommended price as a reference point, not as a prediction of what a retailer will charge or what a future promotion will offer. Sony’s recommended PS5 prices, effective April 2, 2026, are listed below. They are regional suggested prices; a retailer’s current checkout price may differ.
| PS5 model | United States | United Kingdom | Europe | Japan |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 | $649.99 | £569.99 | €649.99 | ¥97,980 |
| PS5 Digital Edition | $599.99 | £519.99 | €599.99 | ¥89,980 |
| PS5 Pro | $899.99 | £789.99 | €899.99 | ¥137,980 |
Sony said the global prices increased because of continued economic pressures. That makes older sale prices especially poor targets to assume will return; it does not establish that prices will rise or fall again. Sony’s price announcement gives the regional recommended prices.
For context, ShopBack reported that US Black Friday 2025 offers included a PS5 Digital Edition Fortnite bundle for $399.99, a PS5 1TB Fortnite bundle for $449.99, and $100 off PS5 Pro. These are historical offers, not confirmed 2026 prices, and the bundle prices only represent value if you wanted what was included. ShopBack’s account of the 2025 offers is the source for those figures.

Is a 2026 console sale confirmed?
No confirmed 2026 Black Friday hardware discounts for PS5, Xbox, or Switch 2 are established here. Sony’s official events page lists 2026 Days of Play for May 27–June 10 and a PlayStation Store Summer Sale for July 15–August 12. The summer event is primarily for digital games and add-ons; it is not evidence of a console hardware discount. The page also records Black Friday 2025 as running November 21–December 5. PlayStation’s deals page is useful for checking official event listings.
ShopBack’s October 8, 2026 guide says Black Friday falls on November 27 and that PS5 offers began about a week early in each of the preceding two years. It also reported that Sony had not announced 2026 offers when the guide was published. Treat that as a reason to watch for announcements in November, not a promise that a sale—or a particular discount—will happen. ShopBack’s dated guide reports the timing and the prior offers.

There is no supported market-wide average discount or probability that a console will go on sale. A retailer’s crossed-out price, a prior-year deal, or a recurring event name cannot by itself establish what you will pay next.
How to decide whether waiting is worth it
Wait when the delay has little cost
If you are price-sensitive and do not need the console soon, track the exact SKU through a known promotion. Compare its checkout price across retailers and check the final total, including tax and shipping. Waiting makes most sense when the possible savings matter more to you than having the console during the intervening weeks.

Buy now when you have a real near-term need
If you want to play now and the current price is acceptable, buying can be the better choice—even if a later sale is possible. Before checkout, compare the same model and condition at other sellers and read the return and price-adjustment terms for that specific item. A policy may exclude certain products, dates, or stock situations.
Value bundles by what you would actually buy
Calculate a bundle’s effective console cost by subtracting only the value of a game or service you genuinely planned to purchase. If you would not otherwise pay for the included content, do not count its advertised value as savings. Check whether a subscription renews automatically and what it costs after any included period.

ShopBack reported a US Nintendo Switch 2 list price of $499.99 and a Mario Kart World bundle price of $549.99 in 2026. The $50 difference is not automatically a $50 saving: it is worthwhile only if you want the included game at that effective price. Those figures are ShopBack-reported US examples, not a guarantee of the live price or a future deal. ShopBack’s Switch 2 deals guide is the source for the reported prices.

Compare like with like before you commit
- Model: Match the digital or disc edition, Pro or standard version, storage tier, region, and generation. A lower price for a different SKU is not a direct comparison.
- Condition: Separate new hardware from used, previously played, and certified refurbished consoles. Compare warranty coverage, return terms, accessories, and included content.
- Total price: Check the price at checkout, taxes, shipping, and any bundle contents rather than relying on a headline or crossed-out price.
- Local market: Stock, retailer competition, tax, and shipping vary by country. The cited 2025 PS5 and 2026 Switch 2 deal examples are US-specific.
- Downside protection: Confirm whether a seller will adjust the price after purchase or accept a return if the price drops, and whether the exact model and purchase date qualify.
Price protection and refurbished options
Microsoft says qualifying products purchased from its Store between October 1 and December 2, 2026 may qualify for a price adjustment through January 31, 2027, subject to eligibility, terms, and stock. This is a limited policy, not a general guarantee for every Xbox purchase or retailer. Check the applicable terms for the product before relying on it. Microsoft Store’s price-adjustment policy describes the rules.

Microsoft also says certified refurbished Xbox consoles may be available through Microsoft Stores for up to $100 off MSRP. “Up to” does not mean every model is available at that discount; verify the console, condition, warranty, and stock shown for your location. Microsoft’s Xbox console information covers its refurbished-console offering.
Microsoft has described console economics as different from other consumer electronics, saying consoles are typically sold below manufacturing cost rather than at a profit. That is the company’s explanation, not independent evidence of how any specific console’s price will move. Xbox Wire’s statement provides the manufacturer’s position.
Quick Recap
A practical rule for your purchase
- Identify the exact SKU and condition you want, including edition, storage, region, and whether you will accept refurbished hardware.
- Record the current checkout price from more than one seller, and compare it with the applicable official recommended price and verified past offers.
- Put a value on waiting: decide how much you care about playing before the next promotion rather than assuming a particular discount will arrive.
- Evaluate a bundle honestly: count only content you would otherwise buy, and account for any subscription renewal.
- Check the seller’s return and price-adjustment terms for that product and purchase date before deciding whether to buy now or wait.
