Short answer: Firefox’s normal autofill for passwords, addresses, and payment cards is a browser form-management feature, not an AI system. Use it on a personally controlled device when convenience helps, but protect saved logins with a Primary Password, require device authentication for payment autofill, and avoid saving anything on a shared computer.
Firefox does include separate AI features, such as translation, image alt text, tab grouping, and link previews. Mozilla’s documentation says some of those models run locally and other features may use third-party models. That does not establish that the password, address, or card autofill system sends your form data to an AI model.
What Firefox autofill is—and what it is not
Firefox autofill remembers information you have chosen to save and places it into matching fields on a web page. Its password manager can save usernames and passwords, generate unique passwords, import credentials, and warn when a saved password appears in a known exposure. Those are conventional browser-manager functions rather than an AI assistant deciding what to type.
The distinction matters because an autofill prompt can look “smart” even when no machine-learning model is involved. Firefox identifies a login, address, or payment field from the page and matches it with data in the browser’s store. A model is not required to perform that lookup.

Mozilla’s Firefox Privacy Notice says some AI models run on the device, while other features may involve third-party models. Check the notice and setting for the named AI feature you are using; do not infer its data handling from the ordinary autofill controls.
Passwords: the useful protections and their limits
Local encryption and Sync
On Firefox Desktop, stored passwords are encrypted locally. If you enable Sync, Mozilla says synced login data is encrypted before it leaves the browser and can be decrypted only by another Sync client holding the encryption keys. Mozilla’s Accounts Privacy Notice, updated August 10, 2026, describes this as end-to-end encryption and says Mozilla cannot decrypt the synced information.
Encryption protects the stored file and the Sync transfer, but it does not make an unlocked browser harmless. Someone who can use your logged-in desktop profile may still be able to request a fill, inspect a signed-in site, or change browser settings.

A Primary Password adds an unlock step for saved logins on the device. Mozilla Support recommends using one “to encrypt your passwords.” Choose a long, unique phrase that you do not reuse elsewhere. Firefox will ask for it when a protected login store needs to be unlocked; exact prompts and menu names can vary by operating system and Firefox version.

On current desktop builds, look in Menu (☰) → Settings → Privacy & Security → Logins and Passwords, then enable Use a Primary Password (the wording can differ slightly by release). Test the unlock before relying on autofill, and keep a secure recovery record. Losing the Primary Password can prevent access to the saved logins; resetting it can remove the stored passwords.
Generated passwords and exposure warnings
When creating an account, Firefox can offer a strong, unique generated password. Accepting a different password for every site reduces the damage if one service is breached. Firefox can also warn that a saved password has appeared in a known exposure. Change that password on the affected site, and change it anywhere you reused it.
Payment cards: the setting that changes the risk
What Firefox saves
Firefox payment autofill is not a complete copy of your card credentials. Mozilla Support states that the card verification value (CVV) is never saved. Firefox can still retain other card details needed to complete a checkout, so treat the feature as sensitive even without the CVV.
Mozilla recommends payment autofill for private computers only. On a personally controlled computer, the convenience may be reasonable; on a family, school, library, or workplace computer used by other people, do not save a card.

Require operating-system authentication
Enable Require device sign in to autofill and manage payment methods. This setting can require your operating-system password, PIN, fingerprint, or other supported biometric before Firefox fills or lets someone manage payment data. It is an additional gate, not a replacement for checking the merchant, amount, and page address.
To find it, open Menu (☰) → Settings → Privacy & Security and locate the Autofill or Payment methods area. Select the requirement for device sign-in before autofill and management. The control may be absent or labeled differently on some operating systems, Firefox editions, or locales.
Check the checkout before accepting a suggestion
- Confirm the site origin in the address bar, including the exact domain and spelling.
- Read the field label and nearby text. A field asking for a card number should not be treated as a request for a password or one-time code.
- Verify the total, currency, shipping destination, and recurring-charge language before submitting.
- Dismiss an unexpected autofill prompt. A page that suddenly requests unrelated credentials is a reason to stop and investigate.
Addresses: convenient, but dependent on region and locale
Address autofill is regional and locale-dependent in Mozilla’s feature documentation. The available profile fields and whether the controls appear can vary with your Firefox build, operating system, language, and country. A US-style state field, for example, will not map neatly to every country’s administrative address format.

Review a saved profile before using it on an unfamiliar store. Remove obsolete addresses, apartment numbers, or phone numbers rather than allowing an old profile to populate a new order. If address autofill is missing, the feature may not be supported for your locale or may be disabled in the current build; it is not evidence that an AI service rejected the data.

Is Firefox autofill safe?
“Safe” depends on what you are protecting and who can use the device. Encryption, a Primary Password, and operating-system authentication reduce exposure, but autofill still places a secret into a web page. Once a password is in the page, code running in that page or a browser extension with broad permissions may be able to interfere with it.
A 2025 academic study by Anuj Gautam, Tarun Yadav, Garrett Smith, Kent Seamons, and Scott Ruoti describes the problem directly: malicious client-side scripts and browser extensions can steal passwords after a manager has autofilled them into a page. The authors also reported a research implementation compatible with 97% of the Alexa top 1000 websites. That number describes an experimental implementation and should not be read as a current, universal Firefox security guarantee.
Reduce the practical attack surface
- Keep Firefox and your operating system updated.
- Install extensions only when you understand their publisher, permissions, and need; remove extensions you no longer use.
- Use a separate browser profile or operating-system account for sensitive work on a managed computer.
- Do not paste a password into a page that is not the intended service, even if the page’s design looks familiar.
- After a suspicious autofill event, change the affected password from a known-good device and review active sessions on the service.
Shared computers and managed devices
Do not save passwords, addresses, or payment cards in a Firefox profile that other people can open. A separate browser window is not a security boundary if the same operating-system account remains unlocked. Private browsing also does not turn a shared desktop into a trusted personal device; it mainly limits local history and does not undo a malicious extension or an already compromised operating-system account.

On a work or school computer, follow the administrator’s policy. Device management may disable payment autofill, impose an authentication method, or install extensions that you cannot audit. If you need a credential on a managed device, prefer an approved sign-in method and sign out when finished rather than saving the secret locally.

Firefox autofill versus a dedicated password manager or FIDO2 key
Firefox autofill is sufficient for many people who use Firefox on their own devices. A dedicated password manager or a FIDO2 security key is a separate choice when you need stronger isolation, broader browser coverage, or phishing-resistant sign-in. The right comparison is about the threat model, not whether one product is “AI.”

A practical setup checklist
- Update Firefox and the operating system.
- Open Settings → Privacy & Security → Logins and Passwords and create a strong Primary Password.
- Review saved logins; delete duplicates, stale accounts, and entries you no longer trust.
- Use Firefox’s generated-password option for new accounts and never reuse an important password.
- If you use Sync, protect the Mozilla account and keep its recovery information current; synced login data is encrypted before leaving the browser.
- For cards, enable Require device sign in to autofill and manage payment methods, and save payment details only on a private computer.
- Review address profiles for old or incorrect information, remembering that availability depends on locale.
- Audit extensions and remove any that request permissions unrelated to their purpose.
- Before every sensitive fill, verify the origin, field label, and transaction amount.
When to turn autofill off
Disable password, address, or payment autofill when the device is shared, when an administrator prohibits local storage, when you cannot protect the operating-system account, or when a site behaves unexpectedly. You can delete individual saved entries instead of disabling the entire feature. If a saved credential may have been exposed, change it at the service, revoke unknown sessions, and then remove or update the Firefox entry.
For most people, the sensible position is neither “AI is filling everything” nor “autofill is automatically safe.” Firefox’s documented password and form features are ordinary browser management tools. Use them on a controlled device with the available unlock protections, and choose a dedicated manager or a FIDO2 key when your need is cross-browser isolation or phishing-resistant authentication rather than card and address convenience.
