Upgrade now if your PC has a real capacity, performance, reliability, or compatibility need and you can buy a compatible part at a reasonable local price. If the computer still handles your workload, waiting is sensible—but set a review date or price target instead of assuming RAM will become cheaper. TrendForce’s latest cited outlook, published September 30, 2026, forecasts higher conventional DRAM contract prices in the fourth quarter and says PC memory supply could tighten further in 2027. That is a market forecast, not a promise about the retail price of a particular kit.
The practical answer: need beats prediction
There is no universal “buy now” or “wait” rule because memory prices are only one part of the decision. Your motherboard or laptop determines which memory is compatible, your workload determines whether more memory helps, and the value of using the faster or more reliable system during the waiting period has a real cost.
Use this order of priority:
- Identify the problem you are trying to solve.
- Confirm that RAM, rather than the CPU, graphics processor, storage, software, or a failing component, is the limiting factor.
- Verify the exact memory generation, capacity limits, form factor, and speed your system supports.
- Compare today’s price for a compatible upgrade with the cost and lost usefulness of waiting.
If the only reason to delay is hope for a lower price, the risk is that the market moves in the opposite direction. If there is no current problem, waiting does not create an obligation to buy later.

What current memory forecasts actually say
The newest cited outlook is TrendForce’s September 30, 2026 forecast. It projects conventional DRAM contract prices to rise 10–15% quarter over quarter in 4Q26 and NAND Flash contract prices to rise 15–20% quarter over quarter. TrendForce says suppliers are prioritizing advanced-process capacity for server products, leaving the overall market undersupplied. It also says PC manufacturers are continuing procurement because they expect tight supply in 2027, when PC DRAM supply could decline as capacity shifts toward servers.

Earlier TrendForce forecasts show why a forecast should be treated as a direction indicator rather than a checkout-price guarantee:
| Publication date | Forecast | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| September 30, 2026 | Conventional DRAM +10–15% QoQ in 4Q26; NAND Flash +15–20% QoQ | Most current cited outlook; still a contract-market forecast, not a local retail quote. |
| July 3, 2026 | Conventional DRAM +13–18% QoQ and NAND Flash +10–15% QoQ in 3Q26 | Useful trend context, but superseded by the September outlook. |
| February 2, 2026 | Conventional DRAM +90–95% QoQ in 1Q26; PC DRAM expected to rise more than 100% QoQ | A severe earlier forecast, not a measurement of the retail change you will see today. |
Gartner’s February 26, 2026 estimates provide broader system context. Gartner projected combined DRAM and SSD prices could be 130% higher by the end of 2026 than in 2025, PC prices could rise 17%, and worldwide PC shipments could fall 10.4% in 2026 versus 2025. It also projected PC lifetimes to increase by 15% for business buyers and 20% for consumers by the end of 2026. These are February forecasts, not settled year-end results.
“This is the steepest contraction in device shipments witnessed in over a decade. Higher prices will narrow the range of devices available, prompting buyers to hold on to devices for longer, fundamentally altering upgrade cycles,” Gartner Senior Director Analyst Ranjit Atwal said on February 26, 2026.

The forecasts point to supply pressure, not to a dependable date when a consumer RAM kit will hit a low. Contract prices are negotiated between suppliers and large buyers. Retail prices also reflect inventory bought earlier, exchange rates, taxes, shipping, promotions, retailer margins, and the exact capacity and speed of a kit.

First decide whether memory is the bottleneck
Measure actual use
On Windows, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, open Performance, then choose Memory. Observe usage during the applications or games that feel slow. A high percentage by itself is not proof that adding RAM will help; modern operating systems intentionally use spare memory for caching. Look for sustained saturation while the workload is active, frequent paging to storage, freezes when switching applications, or clear out-of-memory messages.
MSI’s upgrade guide points to observed RAM use, application crashes, and out-of-memory errors as signs that capacity may be insufficient. MSI is a hardware vendor, so treat its capacity suggestions as vendor guidance rather than a universal minimum for every workload.
Separate capacity problems from speed problems
- Capacity problem: applications close, large projects fail to load, or the system constantly pages when several programs are open. More RAM can help if the platform supports it.
- Speed or latency problem: memory is not full, but a CPU-limited workload may benefit from faster supported memory. Gains vary and can be small outside memory-sensitive tasks.
- Graphics problem: games remain GPU-limited even with unused system RAM. A RAM purchase will not substitute for a graphics upgrade.
- Storage or software problem: a nearly full drive, background process, driver issue, malware, or failing disk can mimic a memory shortage.
- Reliability problem: repeated crashes, failed memory tests, or a module that is disappearing from firmware setup justify replacement even if capacity is adequate.
Check the workload and the rest of the platform
Write down the applications that trigger the problem and the improvement you need: fewer crashes, smoother multitasking, a specific game setting, a virtual machine, video editing, or a required professional tool. If the CPU, GPU, cooling, or storage is already the limiting component, a RAM-only purchase may deliver little value. A platform nearing the end of its useful life may justify saving for a complete system rather than buying memory that cannot move to your next build.

Do not order a DDR4 or DDR5 kit merely because its capacity or sale price looks attractive. DDR4 and DDR5 are different electrical and physical standards; a motherboard designed for one does not accept the other. Laptops generally use a different form factor from desktop modules, and some systems have memory soldered to the board or no user-accessible slots.

Check the computer or motherboard manual and firmware specifications for:
- Supported memory generation (such as DDR4 or DDR5).
- Desktop or laptop form factor.
- Maximum total capacity and maximum capacity per slot.
- Number of slots and whether any are already occupied.
- Supported speed and whether the advertised speed requires a memory profile setting.
- Module configuration requirements, including matched pairs where the platform recommends them.
- Whether adding a module voids a warranty or is physically inaccessible.
Use the exact model number from the motherboard, prebuilt PC, or laptop specification page. A kit described only as “compatible with modern PCs” is not enough evidence. When upgrading an existing pair, a matched kit is generally less risky than mixing unrelated modules, but the system’s manual remains the authority.
Buy now or wait: a decision table
| Situation | Better choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Crashes, out-of-memory errors, or a required workload cannot run | Buy the compatible upgrade now | The benefit of restoring capacity is immediate, while a future price drop is uncertain. |
| Memory is full during normal work and the upgrade is affordable | Usually buy now | You are paying to remove a measured bottleneck, not speculating on a commodity price. |
| PC is adequate and the upgrade is for a possible future game or application | Wait with a trigger | Keep using the current system and reassess at a defined date or price. |
| You have not checked generation, slots, or capacity limits | Do not buy yet | Compatibility uncertainty can turn a cheap kit into an unusable purchase. |
| The platform is old and several components are limiting performance | Compare a complete-system plan | Money spent on memory may not transfer to the next platform or solve the main bottleneck. |
| A module is failing or the system is unstable | Replace the faulty part promptly | Reliability and data integrity matter more than waiting for a market dip. |
How to buy the upgrade safely today
- Record the baseline. Note installed capacity, occupied slots, memory generation, current speed, and the workload that causes trouble.
- Confirm the platform limit. Use the motherboard, laptop, or prebuilt manufacturer specification—not a generic retailer filter—to verify capacity and module type.
- Choose the smallest purchase that solves the measured problem. If capacity is the issue, prioritize sufficient capacity and a matched configuration over an extreme advertised speed your system cannot use.
- Compare the complete local cost. Include taxes, delivery, return terms, and any tools or service needed to install the module. A contract-price headline does not tell you the checkout total.
- Check the return policy and seller details. Memory that is technically the wrong generation or unstable with your board is a compatibility failure, not a bargain.
- Install with the system powered off and unplugged. Follow the board or laptop service instructions, seat each module fully, and confirm that the retaining clips lock.
- Verify recognition. Check firmware setup and the operating system’s reported capacity. Run the workload that previously failed and, if instability appears, test modules individually and restore conservative memory settings.
How to wait without turning it into guesswork
Waiting is a decision, not an absence of one. Set a reassessment date—such as 30, 90, or 180 days—and write down the price at which you would buy the verified compatible kit. Recheck actual local listings at that point rather than relying on a headline about contract prices.

Do not wait solely because someone predicts a specific percentage decline. The cited outlook contains no dependable country-specific retail trough date, and supply can tighten before it improves. If your price target is not reached but the workload becomes urgent, make the purchase based on its usefulness rather than extending the delay indefinitely.
Consider RAM in the context of a complete upgrade
A memory upgrade is attractive when it is inexpensive, compatible, and directly removes a bottleneck. It is less attractive when the system needs a new CPU, motherboard, graphics processor, power supply, or storage at the same time. Check whether the current platform can support the capacity you want and whether the modules can move to a future build; many platform changes require a different memory generation.
For a gaming upgrade, identify whether frame rates are limited by the GPU, CPU, or available memory in the games you actually play. For creative work, check the peak memory use of your largest projects. For virtual machines or development environments, count the host system and every guest workload. A generic capacity target is less useful than a measurement from your own tasks.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing a forecast for a guaranteed retail price.
- Buying DDR4 or DDR5 without checking the board or laptop specification.
- Assuming every slowdown proves a RAM shortage.
- Mixing modules with different specifications without checking platform support.
- Paying for capacity your workload cannot use while another component is the bottleneck.
- Ignoring return policies, firmware compatibility, or a failing module because a sale appears temporary.
- Waiting for an undefined “better time” with no date, price threshold, or performance test.
Make the call
Buy a compatible memory upgrade now when it fixes a measured problem, prevents crashes, restores required functionality, or replaces failing hardware—and when the current local price fits your budget. Wait when the computer is adequate, the upgrade is discretionary, or compatibility and platform plans are unresolved. TrendForce’s September 2026 outlook makes waiting for a guaranteed fall particularly speculative: it forecasts 4Q26 DRAM increases and possible PC supply pressure in 2027. Your own workload, compatible options, and the value of using the PC today remain more reliable decision inputs than any market forecast.
